JP 1000/Colour Kit (260-2960/63) Quick Reference Guide Faxback Doc. # 17729 This document is a collection of the most common problems and solutions for the JP-1000. Black and Color Printing When changing between black and color print heads, do not force the Colour/Black switch too far in either direction or it may become disconnected. ┌─────┐ │ │ COLOUR │ │ │ ┌─┐ │ │ ├─┤ │ Do not move the switch │ ├─┤ │ past here for black │ ├─┤ │ BLACK printing. ────────────────> │ └─┘ │ │ │ └─────┘ Do not move the Colour/Black switch before moving the print head to its center position. The print head is centered by pressing INSTALL CARTRIDGE. If you are printing in color, make sure you have installed and selected the color printer driver. INDICATOR LIGHTS The On Line (yellow) and ON (green) lights provide important information on the status of the printer: If the On Line and ON lights flash slowly (about once per second) in an alternating pattern, this indicates the ink cartridge is empty and needs to be replaced. Replacement ink cartridges are available from Radio Shack. If the On Line and ON lights flash rapidly (about twice per second) in an alternating pattern, this indicates the print head is not making good contact with the holder. Remove and reinstall the print head, making sure it snaps into place. If the indicator lights continue to flash, clean the contacts on the print head as described under Print Head Care. If the On Line and ON lights flash in other alternating patterns, this indicates the Colour/Black switch position does not match the installed print head or the printer driver selected does not match the installed print head. If only the On Line light is flashing, this indicates the printer is out of paper or a piece of paper has misfed. PRINT HEAD CARE Do not open print head or ink cartridge packages until you are ready to use them in the printer. Before you turn off the printer, make sure the print head has moved back to its home position on the right side where it is capped from the air. If there are horizontal white gaps in the printer, perform a priming operation. If the gaps remain, try cleaning the contacts on the print head and holder. Remove the print head and turn off the printer. With a soft cloth or cotton swab slightly moistened with water, clean off the gold contacts on the side of the print head and the contacts inside the print head holder in the printer. If the print quality does not improve, gently blot the nozzles at the bottom of the print head against a lint free cloth dampened with water to remove any dried ink. To keep the print head at its optimum, print something at least once every two weeks. The printer's Print Test printout is useful for this. If you are not planning to use your printer for an extended period of time, remove the print head and store it in the color kit case (if you have one), or use a sealable plastic sandwich bag and force the air out. This keeps the ink in the print head from drying out. PAPER LOADING Fan the paper to separate the sheets before placing it in the paper tray. Do not overfill the paper tray with paper. Do no clamp the lower paper feed lever too tightly, or the paper may misfeed. (ALL/tmc-11/01/95)
