AT Smartdrive Adapter (250-1095) Installation Faxback Doc. # 2191 Tandy SmartDrives have been designed for easy installation. Read the entire installation section before you begin, and refer to your computer user's guide for additional information as you install the drive. REMEMBER: * Static electricity can damage a SmartDrive. Keep the SmartDrive in its anti-static packaging until you are ready to install it. Discharge static electricity from yourself by touching a grounded metal object. You should also wear a grounding strap while handling the drive. * Handle the SmartDrive by its edges. Do not touch components on the drive or interface board. * Do not over-tighten the mounting screws when you attach the SmartDrive to the mounting surface. NOTE: The 25-1095 adapter will not work in a Tandy 3000 series computer due to the design of the main logic board. The adapter requires 2 open 8-bit expansion slots together. Installation: The Tandy AT Hard Drive Adapter kit consists of a SmartDrive interface board, a drive frame, and three tail brackets (one of which will fit your computer). Attach these to your IDE-AT SmartDrive according to the instructions in this section; then place this assembly in your computer. Follow these steps to put together the SmartDrive assembly. 1. Be sure switches and jumpers have been properly set on the SmartDrive. Refer to the SmartDrive's instructions if necessary. 2. Set the SmartDrive interface board jumpers if necessary. (See Settings) 3. Connect the interface board's controller/data cable (the wider of the two) to the SmartDrive The cable and connector should fit together easily. Do not force the connection. Doing so might damage the SmartDrive and/or the computer. 4. Connect the interface board's power cable (the smaller of the two) to the SmartDrive. 5. Attach the SmartDrive to the drive frame. (See Attaching) 6. Attach the tail bracket to the drive frame. (This is not necessary for the Tandy 1000 TL/2 and 1000 TL/3 machines.) 7. Install the SmartDrive assembly (which consists of the SmartDrive, frame, and tail bracket) into the computer. Installing the Smartdrive Assembly into the Computer: When the SmartDrive and tail bracket are connected to the drive frame, follow these steps to install the assembly into the computer. 1. Remove the cover from the computer as directed in the computer user's guide. 2. Choose an 8-bit expansion slot for the SmartDrive assembly. (We suggest putting the assembly in the slot closest to the power supply.) The slot should leave adequate room between the SmartDrive assembly and other expansion boards. (Because of the design of the unit a 16-bit expansion slot should not be used). 3. Remove the metal plate that covers the expansion slot opening at the back of the computer. 4. Carefully install the SmartDrive assembly, noting that: * The edge-connector of the SmartDrive interface board must be fully seated in the expansion slot so it makes a good connection, but it must not damage the computer's main logic board. * The tail bracket on the assembly must properly connect to the computer using the expansion board guide located at the front (across from the expansion slot cover) of the computer. (The 1000 TL/2 and 1000 TL/3 will not have a tail bracket.) 5. Fasten the SmartDrive assembly into the expansion slot bracket (or the small round head screw provided in this kit). 6. Replace the computer cover as described in the computer user's guide. Before you can use the SmartDrive, you must initialize it by creating one or more partitions, then format each partition to prepare it to store and access the operating system and other files. See your computer user's guide and the SmartDrive manual for instructions about how to initialize and format the drive. (tmc-03/17/95)
