14400 Modem/ (250-3036B/38) Installation Faxback Doc. # 3654 Fax/Voice Be sure to observe proper handling and standard electrostatic discharge precautions when installing your modem. To install the modem: 1. Turn off the unplug all power to your computer. 2. Remove the cover of your computer (Refer to your system's documentation for removal procedures and safety precautions.) 3. Select an empty slot and remove the slot cover (a narrow metal strip that covers the opening in the frame for connection to external devices) by removing the screw and pulling out the strip. You just need to remove one screw. Retain the screw as it will be used later. Note: Choose the slot farthest from other adapters, cables, and system components to reduce the electrical noise. 4. Observing proper electrostatic handling precautions, hold the board by its top and bracket, and insert it gently but firmly into the slot. Be sure to press it all the way in. 5. Fasten the modem to the computer frame with the screw removed. Make sure the modem is properly aligned and the telephone cable can be plugged and unplugged without difficulties. 6. Now you can replace the cover on the computer. 7. Use the telephone cord provided to connect your modem to the phone line. 8. You may wish to connect your telephone set and the modem to the same phone line, this way you can use the telephone set to make voice calls when the modem is not in use. 9. You are now ready to install the communication software and set up Windows. 10. Turn you computer ON, load Windows and proceed to the next section. SOFTWARE SETTINGS Please ensure that the Windows Port selection in the Control Panel has been configured to reflect the modem switch settings before running your communication application under Windows. For example, enter the Port selection in the Windows Control Panel. Click on the remote control panel icon If you have set your modem to COM 4 and IRQ5, 5 then click on COM 4, click on Settings, Click on Advanced and chose IRQ5. Once this is done, you may then continue with installing and setup of your communication application. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION The modem comes complete with communications software. Your computer needs communications software to interface with the modem. The following describes the installation procedure for your communications software. Installing Communication Software 1. Turn ON your computer. 2. Refer to the communications software documentation and start the installation procedure. 3. Just follow the instructions provided with the software to begin installation. When a screen appears to guide you through the installation procedure, simply follow the instructions. 4. When asked the model number of the modem, select the model number of your modem. 5. Select the COM Port that your modem is configured for. 6. Set the communication speed. MODEM TESTING After the modem is installed, and power is turned ON, your modem automatically performs a self test to verify the functionality and integrity of its hardware. If an error is found, the modem sends an error message to the PC. If you are using an external modem and an error is detected, it is indicated by a flashing TM LED. The following describe testing and the usage of modem commands. 1. Make sure your modem is properly installed. 2. Turn ON your computer. If you have an external modem, turn it ON as well. 3. Run the communication software. 4. Enter into the command or local mode. Refer to communication software for more information. Analog Loopback Test 1. Test 'ATZ' The modem should respond back with an 'OK' message. 2. If you see "OK", or 0 (zero) Type 'AT&TI' To enable the analog loopback test of the modem. Wait approximately 5 seconds to let the modem complete its handshaking. Hold down one key e.g. "U", for a few seconds and watch the screen to insure that any other characters do not appear. If you do not see "OK", or 0 (zero), proceed to "Troubleshooting". 3. Type '+++' and wait for one second to end the test. The modem responds with an 'OK' message. 4. Type 'AT&TO' The modem will respond with another 'OK' message. Now you are ready for normal modem operation. (LB/all-05/04/95)
