DMP-137 (260-2887) Ribbon Replacement Faxback Doc. # 4013 Installing/Replacing the ribbon cassettes: Black Ribbon Cassette (260-2871) Color Ribbon Cassette (260-2900) Follow these steps to install the ribbon cassettes. CAUTION: * Printing without a ribbon damages the print head and the platen. * Be sure to set POWER to OFF and unplug the printer before you replace the ribbon cassette. 1. Open the printer cover. Note: You might find it easier to install the ribbon cassette with the cover removed. To remove it, raise it to a 45-degree angle and pull it away from the printer. 2. Remove the ribbon cassette from its protective bag. Then tighten the ribbon by turning the ribbon feed knob in the direction of the arrow. 3. Slide the print head to the center of the paper bail. Then carefully thread the ribbon between the ribbon mask and the print head. 4. Position the left end of the cassette so the lower ribbon feed spindle slides into the hole on the underside of the ribbon feed knob. 5. Press down on the cassette's left side until it snaps into place. 6. Pull the cassette's right side against the inside panel until the cassette is straight. Then press down on the cassette's right side until it snaps into place. CAUTION: If the ribbon feed knob does not line up with the ribbon feed spindle, the cassette is not properly inserted. Do not force the cassette into place. Instead, remove the cassette and try again. 7. Tighten the ribbon by turning the ribbon feed knob in the direction of the arrow. If you removed the printer cover, replace it by holding it at a 45-degree angle and sliding its grooves over the printer's tabs. Close the printer cover. When the print becomes light, replace the ribbon cassette with a standard black ribbon cassette (26-2871). To remove the old ribbon cassette, open or remove the printer cover. Then grasp the handle on the top of the cassette and gently pull up the cassette. Follow Steps 3 through 7 to install the new ribbon cassette. Notes: * The life expectancy for the sample black ribbon cassette supplied with the printer is shorter than the estimated life expectancy of a replacement ribbon. * When you turn off the printer, any information stored in the buffer is lost. Adjusting the Optional Color Ribbon Position: If you notice a color misalignment after you run the color self test, rotate the adjustment shaft. * If the upper part of the black line of the self test has cyan, the ribbon cassette position is too low: rotate adjustment shaft toward the back of the printer. * If the black line lacks the bottom part, the ribbon cassette position is too high: rotate the shaft toward the front of the printer.
