LP 400 (260-2888) Maintenance Faxback Doc. # 4057 Cleaning the Printer: Clean the inside of the printer regularly to ensure the best print quality. This section describes when, what, and how to clean. CAUTION: Before cleaning, be sure to turn off the power and unplug the power cord. Notes: Place the printer on a sheet of newspaper when you clean it. Since toner cannot be easily removed, be careful not to stain your clothes or furniture with toner. Though toner is not harmful to the human body, it any toner sticks to your clothes, we recommend that you brush it off immediately. When you remove the developer unit, wrap the developer block in a black cloth to prevent the drum from being exposed to light. CAUTION: Do not blow off toner or dust in the printer with air. Use a vacuum cleaner for cleaning. ┌──────────────────────────────┐ │Cleaning Intervals and Areas: │ └──────────────────────────────┘ Every time you replace the toner, clean the following: * Transfer charger * Discharger * Paper guides * Developer unit Every time you replace the drum unit or ozone filter, clean the following: * Charger * Transfer Charger * Discharger * Paper guides * Developer unit * Laser beam slit ┌─────────────────┐ │Charger Cleaner: │ └─────────────────┘ Note: The charger cleaner is included with the printer. Clean the charger wire with the cleaner to maintain the desired print quality. Insert the charger cleaner into the charger case of the drum unit and clean the charger wire by sliding the cleaner in one direction. Note: The cotton swab should be used to clean the transfer charger and discharger. WARNING: Do not touch the drum surface. Note that the drum is extremely sensitive to light. Take care not to damage the charger wire. ┌─────────────────────────────────┐ │Transfer Charger and Discharger: │ └─────────────────────────────────┘ Remove the developer block from the printer. Clean the transfer charger and the discharger using a cotton swab. WARNING: Take care not to damage the transfer charger and the discharger. ┌──────────────┐ │Paper Guides: │ └──────────────┘ Remove the developer unit from the printer. Clean the paper guides using a dry cloth. ┌────────────────┐ │Developer Unit: │ └────────────────┘ Remove the developer unit from the printer. Clean the developer unit's Mylar sheet using a dry cotton swab. WARNING: Do not use alcohol for cleaning. ┌─────────────────┐ │Laser Beam Slit: │ └─────────────────┘ Open the top cover and clean the laser beam slit with a lens cleaning cloth. ┌───────────────────────┐ │Other Cleaning Points: │ └───────────────────────┘ In addition to periodic cleaning, you should also clean the following items when print quality becomes poor. Note: See also "Troubleshooting" Faxback Doc. # 4053. When white vertical lines appear on printed paper, clean the developer unit. Remove the developer unit from the printer. Scrape off dust or dirt between the doctor blade and the magnet roller using the Mylar scraper. When uneven dark or light spots appears every 1/16 inches on printed paper, clean both ends of the drum. Remove the drum unit from the printer. Clean the silver areas on both sides of the drum. WARNING: Do not touch the drum surface. The drum is extremely sensitive to light and cleaning must be performed very carefully. When uneven dark or light spots appear every 1/8 inches on printed paper, clean both ends of the magnet roller. Remove the developer unit from the printer. Clean both ends of the magnet roller using a dry cotton swab. When the print is blurred, clean the terminals under the developer block. Remove the developer block from the printer. Clean the silver terminals on the inner side of the printer using a dry cotton swab. (dtc/BKL-06/13/96)
