LP 950 (260-2838) Menu Settings Faxback Doc. # 4387 One important difference between the LP-1000 and the LP-950 is that on the LP-950 you must turn the printer's power off and back on again before it will accept any change in the menu setup. On the LP-1000 this is not necessary. This is difficult to find in the User's Guide (page 23, item #7) and it is not clearly explained. Using the front panel buttons, you can set many LP-950 functions, such as the number of copies, type of printer connection, emulation mode, and font source. The LP-950 groups these functions into two menus: the Configuration Menu and the Printing Menu. The Configuration Menu contains items that determine the communication method between your computer and the LP-950. The Printing Menu contains items that determine the final appearance of the printed page, such as the font and number of lines per page. The values in each menu differ depending on the printer emulation mode selected. The examples below are based on the HP LaserJet Series II. ACCESSING THE CONFIGURATION AND PRINTING MENUS The Printing Menu choices are available each time you turn on the LP-950. However, because several items in the Configuration Menu affect the Printing Menu, set the values in the Configuration Menu first. To access the Configuration Menu, press [ON LINE] to set the printer off- line. Then, press and hold [MENU] for 5 seconds. SYM.SET=ROMAN-8 appears on the display. This is the first item in the Configuration Menu. To return to the Printing Menu, press [MENU] until TRAY=LETTER appears. This is the first item in the Printing Menu. The LP-950 automatically leaves the Configuration Menu after you step through all the settings. CONFIGURATION MENU The following items and default values for the HP printer emulation mode appear in the Configuration Menu. An explanation of each menu item follows the list. Item Display ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Symbol Set......................................SYM.SET=ROMAN-8 Interface type.....................................I/F=PARALLEL Timing.................................................TIMING=1 Printer emulation mode..........................EMULATION=HPLJ2 SYMBOL SET: Use this item to select a different group of characters within a font. For example, a business letter might require you to use foreign characters and punctuation marks. A complete list of the available symbol sets appears in the Technical Reference Manual. INTERFACE TYPE: Use this item to select between the two types of connections to your com- puter parallel or serial. TIMING: When using the parallel interface, the timing varies between the computer and the printer. Use this menu item to select the timing value. The default value is TIMING 1. See the Technical Reference Manual for more information. EMULATION MODE: Use this item to select the type of printer emulation mode the LP-950 uses. You should select the HP LaserJet Series II printer emulation mode if pos- sible. If your software does not support this mode, consult the Technical Reference Manual for information about the other available printer emulation modes. See "Changing the Menu Settings" for information on how to change the printer emulation mode. The LP-950 has five emulation modes: -HP LaserJet Series II -Epson FX-80 -IBM Proprinter -IBM Graphics Printer -Diablo 630/630 ECS PRINTING MENU The following items and default values for the HP printer emulation mode appear in the Printing Menu. An explanation of each menu item follows the list. Item Display ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Tray Size...........................................TRAY=LETTER Number of Copies......................................COPIES=01 Font Source.......................................FONT SOURCE=1 Font Number......................................FONT NUMBER=00 Form Length.....................................FORM LENGTH=060 TRAY SIZE: The LP-950 automatically senses the size of the installed paper tray. You do not have to select the tray size by using the front panel controls. When the paper size setting sent from your computer differs from the current size, a message to change the tray appears. For example, CHG.TRAY=LEGAL prompts you to change to a legal size paper tray. To override this request, press [CONTINUE/RESET]. You can feed a different paper size from the requested one. However, the format of the page might be incorrect. COPIES: Use this item to select the number of copies of each page the LP-950 prints. FONT SOURCE: The LP-950 displays the source of the available fonts for use in printing. You cannot make a selection other than FONT SOURCE=/(internal) unless you have installed an optional font card. FONT NUMBER: This item indicates the identification number of the selected internal font. For a complete list of font numbers used in the LP-950, see Appendix 1. FORM LENGTH: Use this item to select the maximum number of lines the LP-950 prints on each page. Setting the form length is sometimes necessary when printing from DOS operations such as a screen print. NOTE: In the HP LaserJet Series II printer emulation mode, the host computer specifies the form length. Also, many modern software packages can specify form length and other formatting features. CHANGING THE MENU SETTINGS: 1-Turn on the printer. 2-Press [ON LINE] to set the printer off-line. TRAY=LETTER appears on the display.
