DMP-207 (260-2917) Paper Handling Faxback Doc. # 6681 The DMP-207 is a versatile printer that can print on a variety of papers. This chapter discusses the details of these features in the following sections: Paper Types Setting the Paper/Thickness Lever Automatic Sheet Feeder Manual Sheet Feeder Printing on Envelopes Top-of-Form Fine Adjustment Clearing Paper Jams PAPER TYPES The DMP-207 can print on may types of paper, including letter- and legal- size paper as well as envelopes. NOTE: Regardless of the type of paper you use, to prevent possible paper jams do not allow more than ten sheets to collect in the output paper tray. Single sheets. When you print with the automatic sheet feeder, the printer accommodates 50 sheets of letter-size paper (8 1/2 x 11"). When you use the manual sheet feeder, the DMP-207 can print on paper and envelopes as narrow as 7.2 inches and as wide as 10.1 inches, and from 6 to 15 inches in length. Thick paper. Paper up to .007 inches thick feeds smoothly through this printer, allowing you to use bond or ledger up to 27 lb. However, for thicker papers you must adjust the printhead away from the platen. Envelopes. Envelopes can be printed by opening the flap and feeding them into the manual feeder. The DMP-207 can print on most standard envelope sizes, including #10, #6 3/4, #7 3/4, and DL. The size limits are the same as for single-sheet paper. Note: When you load paper that is narrower than the capacity of the printer, place the paper near the left side of the printer. The paper-out sensor is about two inches from the left edge of the printer, and the paper must cover it for the printer to operate. SETTING THE PAPER THICKNESS LEVER The paper thickness lever adjusts the position of the printhead. For most papers, keep the paper thickness lever set to the zero position. When printing on thick papers, however, adjust the printhead away from the platen. Remembering to make this small adjustment will give you the best printing results. Note: Regardless of paper thickness, do not use a setting closer to the platen than the standard position! Smudged output or damage to the printhead could result. You can find the paper thickness by removing the top cover and looking inside the printer. The lever is on the left side of the printer. Move the lever away from the platen toward the front of the printer when printing on thicker paper. MANUAL SHEET FEEDER In addition to the automatic sheet feeder, the DMP-207 also has a manual sheet feeder at the rear of the printer. With the manual sheet feeder, you can print on a variety of non-standard papers as well as on envelopes. MANUAL SHEET FEEDING 1. Use the scale atop the manual feeder to center the sheet in the feeder or position it to suit your particular needs. 2. With the print side down and top edge in, gently feed the paper into the manual feeder until the paper rests against the stop in the feeder. After a second, the manual feeder loads the sheet into the printer and moves the sheet to the top-of-form position. 3. Put the printer on line, and you're ready to print. Once you've printed on that sheet, the printer ejects the sheet, and the POWER/PAPER OUT indicator flashes to alert you to load another sheet. Insert another sheet into the manual sheet feeder or put the printer on line to return control to the automatic sheet feeder. PRINTING ON ENVELOPES The manual feeder at the rear of the printer allows you to print on #10, #6 3/4, #7 3/4, and DL size envelopes with a paper weight of 12 to 20 lb. Note: When you print on an envelope with a new ribbon, some streaking might occur. Save an old ribbon for envelope printing if this problem occurs. To print on envelopes, follow these steps: 1. Using the Setup menu, set the envelope option to Auto. 2. Set the paper thickness lever to +2, +3, +4, +5 or +6, depending on the thickness of the envelope. Setting the paper thickness lever is critical to print quality when printing on envelopes. Experiment with several paper thickness settings and choose the one that best suits your particular envelope. 3. To feed an envelope, open the envelopes' flap. Then use the scale on the back of the printer to center the envelope in the manual feeder. Position the envelope flap end first. 4. Gently insert the envelope into the manual feeder until the envelope rests against the stop in the feeder. After about a second, the feeder loads the envelope into the printer and moves the envelope to the top-of-form position. 5. Press the ON/OFF LINE key to put the printer on line. You printer is now ready to receive data from your computer and print on the envelope. The printer waits between envelopes for you to insert each new one. The control panel display reminds you to load a new envelope by flashing the POWER/PAPER OUT indicator. When printing on envelopes, you must consider the printable area. Avoid printing near edges of the envelope or in areas where the paper is triple thick (glued together). Different envelopes can yield different print quality results. We recommend experimenting with several different types of envelopes to find the one that produces the best results for your particular needs. Notes: Envelopes whose flaps have a rounded tip work best in the DMP-207. Envelopes whose flaps have a pointed tip may cause feed problems. Avoid top-of-form settings between -27 and -50 when printing on envelopes. TOP-OF-FORM FINE ADJUSTMENT You never need to use the paper feed knob for setting the top-of-form or for feeding paper. The only time you need to use it is to clear a paper jam. All changes to the variable top-of-form can be made with the top-of- form fine adjustment feature. You can make minute modifications to the top-of-form by following these steps: 1. Load paper onto the automatic sheet feeder. 2. With the printer off line, press the LOAD/PARK key once. The automatic sheet feeder loads a single sheet into the printer and automatically advances the paper to the top-of-form. 3. Press the ON/OFF LINE key to set the printer on line. 4. Press and hold the TOF key for more than two seconds. The ON LINE and POWER/PAPER OUT indicators flash to let you know you have entered the top-of-form fine adjustment mode. If these indicators flash alternately, the top-of-form adjustment is currently set to the default, which is zero. If these indicators flash at the same time, the top-of-form adjustment is currently set to a value other than the default. The factory default setting for the top-of-form adjustment is zero. This leaves the top of form at its factory default of approximately one inch from the edge of the paper. 5. Press the LOAD/PARK key to adjust the paper upwards in 1/60-inch increments. Press the LF/FF key to adjust the paper downwards in 1/60-inch increments. You can adjust the top-of-form from =50/60 inch to +120/60 inch. Note: If you want to print on the first line on the paper, set the top- of-form to -50/60 inch by pressing the LOAD/PARK key to adjust the paper upwards to the first line. 6. Save your new top-of-form by pressing the ON/OFF LINE key. The ON LINE and POWER/PAPER OUT indicators flash to indicate the new setting has been saved. If you do not save it, the new top-of-form setting will be lost when the printer is turned off. Note: You can set different top-of-forms for single sheets and continuous paper (if you've installed the optional tractor unit). The DMP-207 determines which top-of-form to use by the position of the tractor lever. Print Quality in the top 1/2 inch of the page may not be as good as the rest of the page. This depends on the type of paper used and the contents of the text or graphics printed. Depending on the type of paper used, occasional paper feeding problems may occur. To avoid paper feeding problems, at no time should text or graphics be printed in the first or last 1 inch (10 characters at 10 cpi) of the first two lines of the page. Due to their characteristic thickness, envelopes should not be used with -27 through -50 variable top-of-form settings. Paper feeding problems may occasionally occur. (LG/all-06/28/94)
