STA-235 (310-2065) Control Functions Faxback Doc. # 16062 PHONES: Accepts any pair of low impedance stereo headphones. The jack is always "live". POWER/SPEAKERS OFF - Master Power ON/OFF. A - Connects main speakers only. OUT - Turns all speakers off for private headphone listening. B - Connects remote speakers only. A+B - Connects main and remote speakers. Q VOX - Synthesizes 4-channel sound. "A" speakers become front channels, "B" speakers are rear. AUTO-Magic - When pressed in, special circuitry simplifies FM tuning. With the button out, FM tuning is manual. FILTERs - The LO and HI FILTER buttons let you filter out noise. When pressed in, the high filter removes hiss and scratches. The low filter reduces turntable rumble when it is pressed in. LOUDNESS - With the button in, boosts low frequencies to compensate for the ear's reduced sensitivity to bass at low volume. Radio Shack's exclusive Perfect Loudness adds just the right amount of compensation. MONO - When pressed in, switches the amplifier and tuner from stereo to monaural operation. In the out position, the amplifier operates in stereo and the FM tuner automatically switches to stereo when there is a stereo signal. TONE FLAT - Is another push button. When you press it, it automatically disengages the BASS, MIDRANGE and TREBLE controls; giving you "flat" (uncompensated) frequency response. Press again to return to normal (Tone controls will function). BASS, MIDRANGE, TREBLE - The BASS (low frequency), TREBLE (high frequency) and MIDRANGE (middle frequency) controls do not effect the music at their center positions. Turned clockwise each boosts its frequency; turned counterclockwise each "cuts" (de-emphasizes) its range. You'll note these controls are "stepped" and can be individually adjusted for either channel - or both at once (position of knob closer to panel is for right channel and farther from panel is for left channel). The MIDRANGE control is not found on most receivers, but gives you greater control over the stereo. To hear its maximum effect, listen to a record with a vocalist. By turning the MIDRANGE to the + position you can bring the singer "up front," or by turning it to - you can move the vocalist back into the ensemble. This control, sometimes called "presence," is another extra from Radio Shack. SELECTOR AUX - For any high-output source - a second tuner, a crystal or ceramic phono cartridge, a second tape deck, TV, Ham radio, etc. PHONO - For any turntable equipped with a magnetic cartridge. AM - Activates the built-in wideband AM tuner. FM - Activates the built-in FM tuner. FM MUTING - Activates the built-in FM tuner and eliminates interstation hiss. TAPE MONITOR 1 & 2 - Push in to play tapes or to monitor a tape as it is being recorded. These buttons activate the TAPE MONITOR 1 & 2 IN jacks on the rear. DUB OUT - This stereo phone jack serves as an extra tape output. This makes it easy to copy tapes or record any program source without changing the rear-panel connections. The output should be connected to the recorder's Auxiliary or Line inputs. LEFT and RIGHT VOLUME - Adjusts volume and balance. TUNING KNOB - Tunes AM and FM stations. In the Auto-Magic mode, touching the knob changes the TUNING meter light from white to red and permits easy station selection. TUNING METER - Indicates the relative strength of FM and AM signals. Tune for the highest reading. STEREO INDICATOR - This bright red LED lights up when the MONO button is out and you are tuned to an FM stereo signal. FUNCTION LED's - These bright red LED's light up to indicate the function you are using - AUX, PHONO, AM, FM, or FM MUTE. 1. AC Cord - Supplies the Receiver's power. Plug the cord into any 120 VAC, 60 Hz outlet (220/240 VAC, 50 Hz power where sets are so marked on the rear of the unit for European and Australian models). 2. POWER FUSE - Protects the receiver from voltage surges, short circuits and other abnormal operating conditions. If the dial light does not go on when POWER is on, check the fuse. If it is blown, replace it with an identical size and value (4A). 3. UNSWITCHED Convenience Outlet - Powers any audio accessory up to 200 watts. The front panel POWER switch does not affect this receptacle. 4. SWITCHED Convenience Outlet - Plug in an audio accessory which you want turned on and off by the front panel POWER switch. For example, connect a Tuner to this receptacle; thus, when you turn the Amplifier on and off, the Tuner will automatically be turned on and off, at the same time. Power drawn from this receptacle should not exceed 100 watts. 5. A/FRONT SPEAKERS Screw Terminals - Powers main/front speakers which do not have phono jack connectors. NOTE: Use either phono jack or screw terminals for A speakers, not both. 6. A/FRONT SPEAKERS Phono jacks - Connects to speakers with phono jack connectors. NOTE: Use either phono jacks or screw terminals for A speakers, not both. 7. B/REAR SPEAKERS Screw Terminals - Powers remote/rear speakers. 8. TAPE MONITOR 1 IN - Accepts output from any tape deck or recorder for tape playback. These jacks are active when front panel TAPE MONITOR 1 button is pressed in. 9. TAPE MONITOR 1 OUT - Permits tape recording any source chosen by the SELECTOR. The output from these jacks is unaffected by the front panel controls. 10. TAPE MONITOR 2 IN - Accepts output from the second tape deck or recorder for tape playback. These jacks are active when front panel TAPE MONITOR 2 button is pressed in. 11. TAPE MONITOR 2 OUT - Permits recording with a second tape recorder. Also duplicating (or Dubbing) tapes being played through the Receiver from another recorder/player connected to TAPE MONITOR 1 IN. 12. AUX - Accepts output from any high-level source - another tape deck or tuner, a ceramic or crystal phono cartridge, etc. These jacks are active when SELECTOR is set to AUX. 13. PHONO - Accepts output from any turntable equipped with a magnetic cartridge. These jacks are active when SELECTOR is set to PHONO. 14. PHONO LEVEL Switch - Matches output of magnetic cartridge to the level of other inputs. Use the position which provides equal sound levels as compared with other sources. 15. PHONO GND - Accepts the green or black ground wire found on most turntables. Making this "ground" connection reduces or eliminates hum. 16. AM ANTenna Screw Terminal - Connects to external AM/shortwave antenna for long distance AM reception. In most areas the built-in antenna will provide excellent reception. 17. FM ANTenna 75-ohm Screw Terminals - Connects to antennas using 75-ohm coaxial lead-in. Coaxial cable provides extremely high resistance to static and other noise. 18. FM ANTenna 300-ohm Screw Terminals - Connects to antennas using standard 300-ohm lead-in. 19. FM Linecord Antenna - Connects to 300-ohm FM screw terminal to provide FM reception in most metropolitan areas. Remove the linecord antenna when attaching an external FM antenna. 20. Built-in adjustable ferrite AM antenna - Is adequate for most areas for AM reception. Adjust for best reception. (llg/all-07/21/95)
