STA-235 (310-2065) Operation Faxback Doc. # 16064 SPEAKERS/HEADPHONES Select any speaker or combination of speakers with the SPEAKERS switch. In the A position, the receiver's power goes to the main/front speakers only and in the B position to the remote/rear speakers only. A + B puts the same stereo signal through both sets of speakers. In Q VOX, a 4-channel synthesizer turns the A and B speakers into the front and rear channels of a simulated quadraphonic program. The PHONES jack permits headphone listening with any or all of the speakers. For private listening, turn the SPEAKERS switch to OUT. VOLUME Raise or lower the VOLUME to a pleasant listening level. By adjusting the two slide controls separately you compensate for slightly off-center listening positions. TONE The three separate tone controls give you complete control over the system's sound. The controls have no effect on the sound in their center positions. Each of the Tone controls has a separate section to adjust the left and right channels independently. The inner segment adjusts the right channel while the outside segment adjusts the left channel. The BASS control varies the low frequencies, while the TREBLE controls the high frequencies. The MIDRANGE (often called "presence") is not found on most receivers. To hear its maximum effect, listen to a record, tape or broadcast with a vocalist. By turning the MIDRANGE toward +10 position you can bring the vocalist "up front", or by turning it toward -10 you can move the singer back into the ensemble. LOUDNESS When listening at low volume, press the LOUDNESS button. This overcomes the ear's reduced sensitivity to bass at low volume by boosting the low frequencies. Radio Shack's exclusive Perfect Loudness adds just the right amount of bass boost at every listening level. SELECTOR/INPUTS AUX - Adjust VOLUME, Tone, etc. for best sound. PHONO - Put on a record and adjust the front-panel controls for best sound. AM - Use the Tuning knob to select a station. Tune for the highest reading of the TUNING meter. Adjust the front-panel controls for best sound. FM - Use the Tuning knob to select a station. Tune for the highest reading of the TUNING meter. Or you can let Auto-Magic do the fine tuning for you (if so, press in AUTO-M). If the station is broadcasting stereo, the red STEREO LED will light up. Adjust controls for best sound. If the signal is noisy, try either or both of these solutions: 1. Press the FILTER-HI button. (This will filter out some treble, but the signal will still be stereo.) 2. Press the MONO button. (This will leave the fidelity unimpaired, but the signal will not longer be stereo.) FM MUTE - Use as FM (above), but a special circuit eliminates interstation hiss. When listening to very weak stations, it may be necessary to set the SELECTOR to FM. NOTE: If either of the TAPE MONITOR buttons is pressed in, the SELECTOR switch will have no effect on the sound. TAPE MONITOR 1 & 2 Recording - Set the input SELECTOR to the source you want to record. Adjust VOLUME and Tone for your listening pleasure - they will not affect the output to the recorder. If you have a three- head tape deck, you can press TAPE MONITOR 1 to hear the recording immediately after it passes the record head. NOTE: If you have a only one tape deck connected, DO NOT connect to TAPE MONITOR 2 IN and OUT jacks, also leave TAPE MONITOR 2 button in the out position. Playback - Regardless of the input SELECTOR position, press the TAPE MONITOR 1 button. When you have finished listening to the tape, release the TAPE MONITOR 1 button. Recording from another tape - The Receiver has two Recording/Playback or duplicating a tape) circuits built-in (or Tape Monitor circuits, if you prefer). Connect the "master" Tape Deck to TAPE MONITOR 1 IN and OUT; connect the 2nd Tape Deck to TAPE MONITOR 2 IN and OUT. Now, if you want to play the "master" tape and duplicate it - press in TAPE MONITOR 1; to check the quality of the new recording, you can press in TAPE MONITOR 2 and hear the new recording (assuming the 2nd Tape Deck has a 3-head Tape Monitoring feature). With these same connections, you can make 2 recordings at the same time (for example, of an FM stereo program, or of disc recordings being played through the STA-235). An additional feature of the STA-235 will allow you to make connection of a 3rd recorder through the front panel DUB OUT jack (and this way you can make 3 recordings at one time). AUTO-MAGIC Tuning with Auto-Magic Turn the SELECTOR to FM or FM MUTING and press the AUTO-M button in. When you touch the tuning knob with your hand, you'll notice that the TUNING meter changes from white to red. Special advanced circuitry automatically senses your touch and releases the station you were listening to so you can tune another one easily. Just turn the Tuning knob until you hear the station you want - there's no need to fine-tune. When you release the knob, the TUNING meter will turn white again as Auto-Magic fine-tunes the station with electronic precision and locks it in for drift-free listening. Tuning Manually If you are trying to listen to a weak station located between two very strong stations, it may be necessary to tune manually. With the AUTO-M button out, adjust Tuning until you find the station you want. Now fine-tune for the highest reading of the TUNING meter. FILTER The LO and HIGH FILTERs eliminate noise in any program source. The HI FILTER removes FM hiss and record noise while the LO FILTER reduces turntable rumble. Both filters are activated when pressed in. DUB OUT Playback from a tape recorder connected to the rear panel TAPE MONITOR 1 (or 2) IN jacks can be recorded by another tape recorder connected to the front panel DUB OUT jack. The TAPE MONITOR 1 (or 2) button must be pressed in. The playback signal can also be monitored through the receiver at the same time. DUBBING AND MONITORING A few more things you should be aware of - These two tape monitor circuits are in series: thus if you connect an input to TAPE MONITOR 1 IN, pressing TAPE MONITOR 2 will interrupt the signal. The TAPE MONITOR 2 OUT jacks on the rear panel are connected between the two tape monitor circuits - this allows you to duplicate any signal being controlled by TAPE MONITOR 1 but is not connected for TAPE MONITOR 2 IN. This special circuitry will permit you to play a signal through TAPE MONITOR 1 IN jacks, duplicate via rear panel TAPE MONITOR 2 OUT by pressing TAPE MONITOR 1 on the front panel in and monitor via TAPE MONITOR 1 OUT and TAPE MONITOR 2 IN JACKS (3-head deck connected to TAPE MONITOR 1 OUT and TAPE MONITOR 2 IN) by pressing TAPE MONITOR 1 again to out position. Furthermore, since the front panel DUB OUT is always alive (that it, whatever signal is being heard in the speakers is also available at this jack) you can make another recording from this jack. As you use and experiment with these jacks, you'll begin to appreciate the extra versatility of these extra inputs and connections. (llg/all-07/21/95)
