PRO X7 Speaker (400-2071/76) Installation Faxback Doc. # 16174 SPEAKER PLACEMENT Location and position are vital to your speaker's performance. You can place your PRO X7 on a speaker stand (Cat. No. 40-2068A/40-2069A for black, or 40-2074, available by special order, for white), or mount it in a vehicle, on a wall, under a shelf or on a ceiling using an optional wall- mount bracket (Cat. No. 40-2067A for black, or 40-2073, available by special order, for white). The speaker's ideal location is on a table or shelf positioned near the corner of a room. For many modern rooms, a decorator shelf attached to a wooden wall (or other acoustically hard surface) greatly reinforces its sound quality. Where possible, place the front edge of the PRO X7 flush with the front edge of the shelf. For the best sound, avoid placing the PRO X7 on the floor. Floor covers such as carpeting can absorb much sound. For the best stereo image, place a pair of speakers so the distance between them is about the same as the distance between the listening area and the point halfway between the speakers. If you must place the speakers farther apart, turn them slightly inward. If you must place them closer to each other, turn them slightly outward. We recommend you play a familiar, wide-range recording and experiment with speaker placement until you find the location that provides the best sound for your needs. CONNECTIONS With your speaker placed in its approximate location, measure the distance to the amplifier. Use speaker wire or ordinary 18-gauge lamp cord distances greater than 50 feet, use heavier 16-gauge wire. We recommend you use color-coded or marked wires to help you correctly connect the speaker to your sound system. Color-coded wires have a stripe running down one of the conductors, and marked wires have ridges along one of the conductors. Use the ridged or striped wire to connect each speaker's positive (+) terminal to the amplifier's corresponding (right or left) positive terminal. Them connect each speaker's negative (-) terminal to the amplifier's corresponding (right or left) negative (-) terminal. Keeping your speakers in proper phase (connected + to + and - to -) is essential for maximum bass response and the best overall performance. Your local Radio Shack store has a wide selection of speaker wire. Follow these steps to connect the speaker. 1. Separate the wires about 1 inch from the end. 2. Using a wire stripper, remove about 1/4-inch of insulation from the end of each wire. 3. Push the tab on the speaker's positive (+) terminal and insert one end of the ridged or striped wire. Then release the tab. 4. Push the tab on the speaker's negative (-) terminal and insert one end of the unmarked wire. Then release the tab. 5. Connect the other end of the ridged or stripped wire to the amplifier's positive (+) output terminal. 6. Connect the other end of the unmarked wire to the amplifier's negative (-) output terminal Repeat this process to connect a second speaker. USING RUBBER FEET Self-adhesive rubber feet are provided to prevent your speaker from scratching your furniture. If you are not mounting your speaker on a wall, remove the paper backing and press the feet on the bottom of the speaker. There are two types of rubber feet. Use the thicker ones for the front.
