Optimus-500 Speaker (400-4055) Installation Faxback Doc. # 16355 System PLACEMENT Open shelves or mantles are obvious locations for the stereo speakers. Position the speakers close to or against a wall with the Optimus logos facing each other. Each speaker is labeled on the back -- L for left and R for right. For the best stereo image, the distance between speakers should be the same as the distance from the main listening area to a point midway between the speakers. If the speakers must be farther apart than recommended, you can turn them slightly to achieve a more realistic effect. A little experimenting will reveal the best setup for your room and system. Because low frequencies are much less directional than other sounds, you can use a single subwoofer for both stereo channels, and you can put the subwoofer almost anywhere in your listening area. However, to simplify connections, it is usually best to put the subwoofer between the left and right stereo speakers. CONNECTIONS Connect the system using AWG 20 gauge speaker wire for distances up to 16 feet. For greater distances, use heavier wire. Your local Radio Shack store has a wide selection of speaker wire. NOTE: You must connect the speakers' positive (+) to positive and negative (-) to negative. You can use color-coded speaker wire to show polarity and make connection easier. Connect the speakers as follows: 1. Using a wire stripper, remove about 1/4 inch of the insulation from the wires' ends. 2. Connect your amplifier's left and right speaker output terminals to the subwoofer's left and right input terminals. 3. Connect the subwoofer's left and right output terminals to the appropriate left and right stereo speakers. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the Optimus-500, do not exceed its power handling capacity. Before turning on your amplifier/receiver, set its volume to its lowest setting. Then adjust the volume to the desired level. If the sound distorts, reduce the volume. Distortion can damage the speakers. (ALL-08/07/95)
