System 1230 Stereo (130-1250) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 16392 Rack System Do not connect the system to AC power until you complete all other connections. CONNECTING ADDITIONAL SPEAKERS You can connect one or two speakers (not supplied) for surround-sound. Be sure each speaker has an impedance of at least 8 ohms. Your local Radio Shack store has a wide selection of speakers. SETTING UP THE TURNTABLE To prepare the turntable for use, you must release the turntable, install the turntable's adapter, and reset the turntable mechanism. Releasing the Turntable With a Phillips' screwdriver, turn the two transit screws clockwise. turn the screw at the right corner of the turntable until it is flush with the surface. To reach the other screw, rotate the platter clockwise until you see the screw next to the spindle. Turn this screw about five turns. Installing the Adapter You can position the supplied 45-rpm adapter so you can play 33- or 45-rpm records. Install the adapter by lining up the adapter's clips with the slots in the platter and pressing down. For a 33-rpm record, turn the adapter clockwise as you press it over the spindle. The adapter drops down and locks into place. For a 45-rpm record, lift the adapter and turn it counterclockwise until it locks into place. CONNECTING THE COMPACT DISC CHANGER Follow these steps to connect the CD changer to the system. 1. Plug the CD changer's control cable into the jack labeled FROM CD CHANGER on the back of the system. 2. Plug one of the supplied audio cables into the CD changer's left OUTPUT jack and to the system's CD LEFT jack. 3. Plug the other supplied audio cable into the CD changer's right OUTPUT jack and to the system's CD RIGHT jack. CAUTION: Do not place the CD changer on top of the amplifier or any other component that emits heat. CONNECTING THE ANTENNA When you tune to local AM and FM stations you can use the built-in, high- quality AM antenna and the supplied indoor FM antenna. To improve AM reception, we recommend that you position the system until you hear the best sound. For better FM reception, connect an outdoor FM antenna. NOTE: The supplied FM antenna is usually adequate for FM reception in metropolitan areas. If FM reception is weak, disconnect the FM antenna from the terminal on the back of the system, and connect an outdoor antenna to the system. Use a 300-ohm twin lead for this connection. Your local Radio Shack store carries a complete line of outdoor antennas and accessories. To connect the supplied FM antenna, do the following: 1. Press down both FM ANTENNA terminal tabs on the back of the system. 2. Insert the stripped ends of the antenna's wires into the holes and release the tabs. 3. Position the antenna for the best reception. WARNING: When installing or removing an outdoor antenna, use extreme caution. If the antenna starts to fall, let it go! It could contact overhead power lines. If the antenna touches the power line, contact with the antenna, mast cable or guy wires can cause electrocution and death. Call the power company to remove the antenna. Do not attempt to do so yourself. CONNECTING AN AUXILIARY AUDIO SOURCE You can connect an auxiliary audio source to the system's auxiliary jacks by inserting the source's left and right audio cables into the AUX LEFT and RIGHT jacks on the back of the stereo system. CONNECTING THE POWER To connect the system to a power source, plug it's AC cord into a standard household outlet. INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL'S BATTERY The remote control requires two AA batteries (not supplied) for power. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack's Cat. No. 23-552. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Remove the battery compartment cover by pressing down on the cover's tab and sliding the cover off the compartment. 2. Insert the batteries, observing the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the compartment. 3. Replace the compartment cover. NOTE: If the remote control does not work or has poor range, replace both batteries. (ALL-08/08/95)
