SCP-70 Stereo Mate AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player (140-1212) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 17943 CONNECTING POWER For portable use, you can power the SCP-70 using internal batteries. Using optional adapters, you can also power the SCP-70 from an AC outlet or from your vehicle's cigarette lighter socket. Internal Battery Power The SCP-70 requires two AA batteries for power. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-557. Or, you can use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, such as Cat. No. 23-125, with a battery charger (Cat. No. 23-133). CAUTIONS: Do not mix non-rechargeable and rechargeable batteries. Only use fresh batteries of the required size and type. 1. To remove the battery cover, press down and slide the cover in the direction of the arrow. 2. Insert the batteries into the compartment on top of the attached ribbon, as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. 3. Replace the cover. IMPORTANT: The SCP-70 is capable of using rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. At the end of a battery's useful life, it must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs. NOTES: If the FM ST./BATT. indicator dims or does not light-up at all during cassette playback or FM stereo reception, and/or the SCP-70's sound becomes weak or distorted, replace the batteries. If you do not plan to use the SCP-70 for a month or more, remove the batteries. To easily remove the batteries, remove the battery compartment cover and pull up the ribbon. Connecting an AC or DC adapter automatically disconnects the internal batteries. Using Standard AC Power You can power the SCP-70 from a standard AC outlet using an AC adapter, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 273-1654. CAUTIONS: You must use an adapter that supplies 3 volts DC power and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must properly fit the SCP-70's DC 3V jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage the SCP-70 or the adapter. Always plug the AC adapter into the SCP-70 before you plug it into an AC outlet. Always unplug the AC adapter from the outlet before you unplug it from the SCP-70. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Insert the adaptaplug's black end into the adapter cord to read TIP- NEG. 3. Insert the adaptaplug's other end into the DC3V jack. 4. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. Using Vehicle Battery Power You can power the SCP-70 from a vehicle's cigarette lighter socket using a DC adapter (not supplied), such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 270-1560. CAUTIONS: The vehicle must have a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. You must use an adapter that supplies 3 volts DC power and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must properly fit the SCP-70's DC3V jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage the SCP-70 or the adapter. Important: Always plug the DC adapter into the SCP-70 before you plug it into the cigarette lighter socket. Always unplug the adapter from the cigarette lighter socket before you unplug it from the SCP-70. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Insert the small adapter plug into the SCP-70's DC3V jack. 3. Plug the other end of the adapter into the vehicle's cigarette lighter socket. CONNECTING HEADPHONES/SPEAKERS To listen to the SCP-70, you need a pair of headphones or amplified speakers with a 1/8-inch plug. Your local Radio Shack store sells a wide variety of headphones and amplified speakers. Connect the headphones' or amplified speakers 1/8-inch plug to the headphone jack on the side of the SCP-70. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. (/all-11/20/95)
