System 735 Integrated Stereo Component System (130-1283) Operation Faxback Doc. # 17968 CAUTIONS: To protect your hearing, set the volume on the system to its lowest level before you turn on the system. Do not set the volume on the system too high while playing soft or quiet portions of a music program. Due to the system's wide dynamic range, the speakers might be damaged if the music program includes a sudden loud passage. IMPORTANT: Make sure you have removed the shipping screw and sleeve from the bottom of the system before you load and play CDs (see "Unpacking the System," Faxback Doc.# , Preparation). Follow these steps to operate your system. 1. Press POWER/STANDBY. The STANDBY indicator turns off and the power turns on. NOTE: After connecting the power cord, when you press POWER/STANDBY for the first time, the volume reset feature automatically reduces the volume level to protect the speakers and your hearing. POWER ON scrolls across the CD changer's display. 2. Press either SPEAKERS A or B (or both) beside the cassette decks. See "Selecting Speaker Systems," below. 3. Press one of the source selection buttons to choose the desired audio source (TAPE, CD, TUNER, etc.). Its indicator lights. 4. If you play an audio source encoded with Dolby Surround Sound, select the desired Dolby Pro Logic Surround Mode. See "Selecting Dolby Pro Logic Surround Mode," below. 5. Start the selected audio source, or tune to the desired station (see "Using the Tuner," Faxback Doc.# ). 6. Adjust VOLUME (or MASTER VOL on the remote control) to a comfortable listening level. See "Listening Safely," below. 7. Adjust BALANCE for the desired stereo effect. 8. To turn off the power, press POWER/STANDBY again. The power turns off and the STANDBY INDICATOR LIGHTS. GOOD-BYE scrolls across the CD changer's display. USING THE DEMONSTRATION FEATURE Your System 735 has a built-in demonstration to showcase the features of its CD changer. With the system's power on and the CD changer stopped, press and hold INTRO for about 2 seconds to turn on the demonstration. DEMO and other messages scroll across or flash on the display, the disc number graphics flash on and off, and the CD changer tray rotates. The demonstration stops automatically after about 3 minutes. To stop it before then, press any button on the CD changer. SELECTING SPEAKER SYSTEMS You can use speakers A,B, or both by setting the SPEAKERS A and B switches. If you use only one pair of speakers, press the corresponding A or B switch. If you connected two pairs of speakers, press both SPEAKERS A and B. DOLBY PRO LOGIC SURROUND Dolby Surround Sound is a multichannel sound processing system originally developed to enhance the soundtracks of theatrical motion pictures. This multichannel capability enables film makers to present dialogue and sound effects in a more dimensional manner that compliments the action occurring on the screen. For example, a car racing from right to left across the screen is accompanied by the sound of the engine, screeching tires, etc., moving in the same direction throughout the theater. How Does Dolby Surround Sound Work in the Home? Designed by the highly renowned Dolby Laboratories, the home version of this system utilizes a matrix encoding scheme that combines four separate signals (left, right, surround, center) into two channels for distribution on stereo video tapes, laser discs, and CDs. The built-in Pro Logic surround decoder in the system restores the original left, right, and surround channels, while adding a center channel, which stabilizes the action occurring at the center of the screen. The Pro Logic surround system recaptures the full richness and depth of a Dolby-encoded film, for enjoyment in the comfort of your own home. The System 735 gives you the best sound performance from music sources which have the Dolby mark. Selecting Dolby Pro Logic Surround Mode When playing a program source encoded with Dolby Surround Sound (video tape, laser disc, etc.), follow these steps to select the proper surround mode. 1. Adjust VOLUME (or press MASTER VOL + or - on the remote control) to adjust the sound level from the speakers. 2. Press DOLBY PRO LOGIC (or PRO LOGIC on the remote control) to turn on Dolby Pro Logic. The DOLBY PRO LOGIC indicator lights. 3. Repeatedly press MODE to select the appropriate operating mode for your speakers and their placement. NORMAL: Choose this mode when using a center channel speaker that has limited low-frequency response. The low-frequency sounds occurring at the center of the screen are routed equally to the front left and right speakers. This creates the illusion that the sound is coming from the center. WIDE: Choose this mode when using a full-range center channel speaker similar in size and sound quality to the front speakers. The low-frequency sounds occurring at the center of the screen are routed to the center channel speaker. PHANTOM: Choose this mode when a center channel speaker is not used. The sound occurring at the center of the screen is routed equally to the front left and right speakers. This creates the illusion that the sound is coming from the center. 3CH LOGIC: Choose this mode when using only the front left, center, and front right speakers (no surround speakers). The sound that would normally come from the surround speakers is combined with the front channel sound and routed to the front left and right speakers. 4. Press TEST TONE. The test tone sounds from each speaker for about 2 seconds. (Both surround speakers sound the tone at the same time, if connected.) 5. Adjust VOLUME (or press MASTER VOL + or - on the remove control) until the test tone is at a comfortable level. 6. Press CENTER + or - or SURROUND + or - on the remote control until the volume level for each speaker is the same. 7. When finished, press TEST TONE to turn off the test mode. The test tone repeats if TEST TONE is not turned off. NOTES: When Dolby Pro Logic is on, VOLUME (MASTER VOL + or - on the remote control) affects the sound level from all speakers. There is no Dolby Surround effect when monaural program material is played. When receiving a weak FM broadcast, switch Dolby Pro Logic off. The sound quality might improve. When using stereo headphones, switch Dolby Pro Logic off. USING THE REMOTE CONTROL To use the remote control, point it directly at the infrared sensor on the tuner and firmly press the desired button. The remote control works up to 20 feet away. NOTE: The buttons on the remote control perform the same functions as similarly marked buttons on the front panel. To connect the headphones, insert the headphone cord's plug into the PHONES jack. Then press out the SPEAKERS A and B switches to silence them. Note: Dolby mode must be turned off. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to its lowest level before you begin listening. After you put on the headphone, adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level. Do not listen at extremely high-volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Do not increase the volume once you establish a comfortable listening level. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. (CS 11/9/95)
