Stereo Dual Dubbing Cassette Deck with Dolby B/C NR (140-0644) Hints and Tips Faxback Doc. # 18021 CHOOSING THE RIGHT TAPE Choice of tape is vital to good recordings. To take full advantage of the SCT-100 performance capabilities, you should use only fine quality tapes designed specifically for music recordings. For low-noise, wide range recordings, we recommend the new MIV, MII or XR tapes (in conjunction with the appropriate TAPE SELECTOR switch settings). SPECIAL NOTE ON METAL TAPE The new metal tapes offer the very finest sound reproduction. The technology involved permits greatly extended dynamic range, especially at the high-frequency end of the audio spectrum. This means much less possibility of distortion on peaks of sound (clash of cymbals, etc.). To take full advantage of this extended high frequency dynamic range, you can record on metal tapes at higher levels than with other types. So, instead of limiting meter peaks to 0 and 3, when using metal tape, set record levels for meter readings peaking over 3. Recording at these higher levels will not produce distortion in the recorded signal, but will result in greater output and better signal-to-noise ratios. CASSETTE STORAGE Do not store cassette tapes in places: with high temperatures with high humidity that are exposed to strong magnetic fields (near magnets, transformers or motors.) with high concentrations of dust or dirt For convenience and maximum tape protection, we recommend the use of storage containers, available at your Radio Shack store. ERASING A TAPE Re-recording a tape will automatically erase previously recorded material. To erase a tape without recording new material, follow the instructions below: 1. Load the cassette tape to be erased into TAPE 2 deck. 2. Disconnect all microphones, and set the RECORD LEVEL controls to 0 (minimum) position. 3. Set the TAPE 2 MODE switch to reverse to erase both sides, or to sequential to erase only side A. 4. Press RECORD (the same procedure as for recording). 5. When the end of the tape is reached, it will be completely erased. You can erase an entire tape (both sides) in a few seconds with Radio Shack's Bulk Tape Eraser (Cat. No. 44-232). Do not use this method if you only want to erase one side of a tape. ERASE PROTECTION All cassettes are provided with erasure protection tabs which, when in place, allow the tape to be erased or re-recorded. If these tabs have been removed from a cassette, RECORD cannot be pressed. Note: Never attempt to force pressing the control, to avoid damaging the mechanism. Consequently, accidental erasure is effectively prevented. To protect Side A of a cassette tape, break off the Side A tab with a screwdriver. A tape on which these tabs have been removed may be re-recorded by covering the tab holes with strong plastic tape. 4-TRACK RECORDING AND PLAYBACK The SCT-100 uses the standard four-track, two-channel (stereo) system for recording and playback. After recording both right and left channels on one side, remove the cassette, turn it over and reload into the cassette compartment. Now, you are ready to record both channels on the other side. In the auto reverse record mode, when tape end of side A is reached, side B will automatically start recording. (PH 10/31/95)
