CD-3490 Portable Compact Disc Player (420-5055) Operation Faxback Doc. # 18096 PLAYING A CD Your CD player can play standard 5- or 3-inch CDs that have this mark on them. COMPACT disk DIGITAL AUDIO Follow these steps to play a CD. 1. Set VOLUME to the minimum level. Be sure HOLD on the front of the CD player is set to OFF. 2. Press OPEN and lift the disc compartment cover. 3. Carefully place the CD, label side up, over the disc compartment's center hub. Press down slightly on the CD until it clicks and lies flat in the compartment. Then close the disc compartment cover. The display briefly shows 00 00 00, then a flashing --, then the display changes to the total number of tracks and total playing time on the disc. After about 10 seconds, the CD player displays 00 then turns off. Press >II. The CD player turns on and displays 00 00 00, then briefly changes to the total number of tracks and total playing time on the disc. Then Track 1 begins to play. The display shows the current track number and the current track's elapsed time. Adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level, using either of the following guidelines. If you connected earphones, amplified speakers, or a CD-to-cassette adapter to the CD player's PHONES jack, set the CD player's VOLUME to the desired level. NOTE: The CD player's VOLUME control affects only the volume level you hear through the PHONES jack, not the volume level of the sound you hear through the LINE OUT jack. If you connected the player's LINE OUT jack to your home audio system or your car's stereo, use the volume controls on those units to set the desired volume as needed. CAUTION: To avoid speaker damage, set your audio system or car stereo's volume control to the minimum level before you play a CD. After the CD player begins to play, slowly increase the volume. Set DSP as desired (see "Digital Signal Processing System," Faxback Doc. #18095, Features). When the last track finishes playing, the CD player automatically stops and turns off. To stop playing the CD before it ends, press STOP. The display shows 00 then LL for about 8 seconds, then the CD player automatically turns off. LOCKING THE CONTROLS To prevent accidentally turning the CD player on or off, or changing the track you are listening to, set HOLD to ON. HoLd briefly appears, then no controls work (except OPEN). If you press any button other than OPEN when HOLD is set to ON, HoLd briefly appears. Set HOLD to OFF to operate the controls again. BACKLIGHT When you operate the player with an AC or DC adapter, the display's backlight remains on during operation. When you operate the player from batteries, the backlight turns on for about 5 seconds when you press any button (except OPEN). CHECKING REMAINING TIME During normal or programmed play or pause, press M-SET to display the remaining time on the current track. NOTE: During intro scan, the CD player does not show the remaining time. Press M-SET again to display the total remaining tracks and total remaining time (maximum 99 minutes, 59 seconds) on the CD or in a programmed sequence. NOTES: During repeat play, the CD player does not show the total remaining tracks on the disc. During programmed play, the CD player shows the total remaining time and number of the track that is playing. Press M-SET again to return to the normal display. AUTOMATIC SEARCH MUSIC SYSTEM You can use the automatic search music system (ASMS) during normal or programmed play to quickly locate any track on a CD. During play, press >>| or |<< to select the track you want to play. Then press >II within about 8 seconds to play the track. INTRO SCAN The intro scan feature lets you listen to the first 10 seconds of each track on a CD. 1. Repeatedly press P MODE until INTRO flashes on the display. 2. Press >||. INTRO lights steadily. Intro scan starts from the first track. To return to normal play from intro scan, press >|| again while the desired track is playing. Normal play continues from the beginning of that track. To cancel intro scan, press STOP or repeatedly press P MODE until no indicator appears. NOTE: The CD player does not scan the tracks in a programmed sequence. AUDIBLE SEARCH Use audible search during play to rapidly search forward or backward to locate a specific section of a track. During audible search, the CD plays at a lower volume and a higher speed. To search forward, press and hold >>|. To search backward, press and hold |<<. Release the button to resume normal play. NOTES: If you press and hold down >>| while the last track plays, the CD player automatically stops and turns off at the end of the track. If you press and hold down |<< while the first track plays, normal play automatically starts from the beginning of the first track. PAUSE AND CUE To temporarily pause play, press >||. The time indicator flashes on the display. Press >|| again to resume play. NOTE: If you pause a CD for over 3 minutes, the CD player turns off. You can also use >|| to cue a track. When the CD player is stopped, press >>| or |<< to select the track you want to cue. Then press >|| twice. The time indicator flashes on the display. To cue a track in a programmed sequence, repeatedly press P MODE until M (without left circular arrow or repeat play icon) appears on the display. Then press >|| twice when the CD player is stopped. The time indicator flashes on the display. Press >>| or |<< to display the track you want to cue. To play the cued track, press >||. REPEAT PLAY The CD player can repeat a single track, the entire CD, randomly selected tracks, or a programmed sequence (see "Programming the CD-3490," Faxback Doc. #18095, Features). To repeat a single track, repeatedly press P MODE until the repeat play icon and 1 appear on the display. At the end of the track, the CD player repeats it. To repeat an entire CD, repeatedly press P MODE until repeat play icon and ALL appear on the display. When the CD player reaches the end of the CD, it returns to the first track and replays all the tracks. To repeat randomly selected tracks, repeatedly press P MODE until the repeat play icon and RANDOM appears on the display. All tracks on the disc repeatedly play in random order. To repeat a programmed sequence, repeatedly press P MODE during play until the repeat play icon appears and M and the first programmed number flash on the display. Press >||. M and a track number light steadily and the programmed sequence repeatedly plays. To cancel repeat play, press STOP or repeatedly press P MODE until no indicator appears. (CS 11/9/95)
