SCP-69 Cassette Player (140-1211) Care and Maintenance Faxback Doc. # 18200 The Radio Shack SCP-69 Sports Auto Stop Cassette Player with Bass Boost is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for the SCP-69 so you can enjoy it or years. Keep the SCP-69 dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids contain minerals that can corrode electronic circuits. Use and store the SCP-69 only in normal temperature environments. Temperature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and distort or melt plastic parts. Keep the SCP-69 away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature wear of parts. Handle the SCP-69 gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage the circuit boards and case and cause it to work improperly. Occasionally wipe the SCP-69 with a damp cloth to keep it looking new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean it. Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Always remove old or weak batteries. They can leak chemicals that can destroy electronic circuits. Modifying or tampering with the SCP-69's internal components can cause a malfunction and might invalidate its warranty. If your SCP-69 is not performing as it should, take it to the local Radio Shack store for assistance. TAPE TIPS Tape Quality For the best performance, use only regular length (60- or 90-minute) cassette tapes. We do not recommend long-playing cassette tapes, such as C-120's, because they are extremely thin and can easily tangle in the playback mechanism. Restoring Tape Tension and Sound Quality After you play a cassette tape several times, the tape might get tightly wound on the reels. This can cause playback sound quality to deteriorate. To restore the sound quality, fast-forward the tape from the beginning to the end of one side, then turn the tape over and fast-forward to the end again. Then loosen the tape reels by gently tapping each side of the cassette's outer shell on a flat surface. CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the casette when tapping it. Do not touch the exposed tape or allow any sharp objects near the cassette. Cleaning the Tape Handling Parts Dirt, dust, or particles of the tape's coating can accumulate on the tape head and other parts the tape touches. This can greatly reduce the SCP- 69's performance. Follow these steps to clean the tape handling parts after about every 20 hours of tape player operation. 1. Open the cassette compartment door. 2. Remove the batteries and disconnect any other power source. 3. Press PLAY to expose the tape-handling parts. 4. Use a cotton swab dipped in denatured alcohol or tape head cleaning solution to clean the playback head, pinch roller, and capstan. Note: The local Radio Shack store has a complete line of cassette deck cleaning supplies. 5. When you finish cleaning, press STOP, reinstall the batteries, and close the compartments. (EB 11/10/95)
