SCP-69 Cassette Player (140-1211) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 18202 You can power the SCP-69 from any of these power sources: Internal battery power Standard AC power (using an AC adapter) Vehicle battery power (using a DC adapter) USING INTERNAL BATTERY POWER You can power the SCP-69 from two AA batteries (not supplied). For the best performance, we recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-557. You can also use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23-125) with a battery charger (Cat. No. 23-133). Follow these steps to install batteries. 1. Pull back on the cassette compartment door's latch and pull the door open. 2. With the door open, press the battery compartment cover's tab in the direction of the arrow and lift up the cover. 3. Pull the red ribbon and remove the old batteries, if necessary. CAUTIONS: Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. If you do not plan to use the SCP-69 for a month or more, remove the batteries. Never leave dead, old, or weak batteries in the cassette player. They can leak chemicals and corrode or damage electronic circuits. 4. Install the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+and-) marked inside the compartment. CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Never mix fresh and old batteries, or different battery types, such as rechargeable and alkaline batteries. NOTE: To make it easier to replace the batteries later, place them on top of the red ribbon. 5. Replace the battery compartment cover and close the cassette compartment's door. NOTE: If you hear weak or distorted sound, replace the batteries or recharge rechargeable batteries with a battery charger. Refer to the battery charger's owner's manual for charging instructions. USING STANDARD AC POWER You can power the SCP-69 from standard AC power using an optional AC adapter such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 273-1654. CAUTIONS: The recommended AC adapter supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip is set to negative, and its plug correctly fits the SCP-69's DC 3V jack. Using an AC adapter that does not meet these specifications might damage the SCP-69 or the adapter. Always plug the AC adapter into the SCP-69 before you plug it into the AC outlet, and always unplug it from the AC outlet before you unplug it from the SCP-69. Otherwise, the unconnected barrel plug might touch some metal and damage the adapter. Follow these steps to power the SCP-69 from a standard AC outlet. 1. Set the AC adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Insert the adapter's black-tipped barrel plug into the adapter cord so it reads TIP-NEG. 3. Remove the rubber plug from the SCP-69's DC 3V jack and insert the black-tipped barrel plug into the jack. CAUTION: When you are not using an AC or DC adapter, always keep the rubber plug inserted in the DC 3V jack to insure "all weather" protection. NOTE: Connecting an AC adapter automatically disconnects internal battery power. 4. Plug the AC adapter's other end into a standard AC outlet. USING VEHICLE BATTERY POWER You can power the SCP-69 from a vehicle's battery using an optional DC adapter, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 270-1560. CAUTIONS: The vehicle must have a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. The recommended DC adapter supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip is set to negative, and its plug correctly fits the SCP-69's DC 3V jack. Using a DC adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the SCP-69 or the adapter. Always plug the DC adapter into the SCP-69 before you plug it into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket, and always unplug it from the SCP-69. Otherwise, the unconnected barrel plug might touch some metal and damage the adapter. Follow these steps to power the SCP-69 from a vehicle's battery. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Insert the orange-tipped barrel plug's twin connectors into the adapter cord's smaller end so it reads TIP-NEG. 3. Remove the rubber plug from the SCP-69's DC 3V jack and insert the orange-tipped barrel plug into the jack. CAUTION: When you are not using an AC or DC adapter, always keep the rubber plug inserted in the DC 3V jack to insure "all weather" protection. NOTE: Connecting a DC adapter automatically disconnects internal battery power. 4. Plug the DC adapter's other end into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. CONNECTING HEADPHONES/SPEAKERS To hear the cassette player's sound, you need a pair of stereo headphones or amplified speakers with a 1/8-inch plug. The local Radio Shack store sells a wide variety of stereo headphones and amplified speakers. Remove the supplied rubber plug from the PHONES jack, and connect the stereo headphones' or amplified speakers' 1/8-inch stereo plug to the jack. CAUTION: To ensure "all weather" protection, always keep the supplied rubber plug inserted in the PHONES jack when not using the PHONES jack. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Overtime, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can cause a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. USING THE BELT CLIP The belt clip lets you keep your hands free while you listen to the SCP-69. To remove the belt clip, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw holding the belt clip. To replace the belt clip, secure it with the screw. (EB 11/10/95)
