CD-6500 Compact Disk Automatic Changer (420-5049) Operation Faxback Doc. # 18300 WARNING: To protect your hearing, set the volume on your receiver or amplifier to its lowest level before you load and play a CD. CAUTION: Do not set the volume on your receiver or amplifier too high while playing soft or quiet portions of a music program. Due to the CD changer's wide dynamic range, the speakers might be damaged if the music program includes a sudden loud passage. TURNING THE CD CHANGER ON AND OFF To turn on the CD changer, press POWER or turn on the receiver or amplifier to supply power to it. The POWER indicator turns on, POWER ON scrolls across the display, then the CD tray rotates to search for loaded CDs. If there are loaded CDs, the display shows DISC, the current disc number, and each loaded CD's disc number surrounded by a graphic. If there are no loaded CDs, the display shows DISC 1 and NO DISC. To turn off the CD changer, press POWER, GOOD-BYE scrolls across the display, then the POWER indicator turns off. The CD changer also turns off when you turn off the receiver or amplifier (if you connected the changer to the switched outlet on the receiver or amplifier). NOTE: If you do not plan to use the Cd changer for a long time, disconnect it from the AC outlet. The CD changer draws a small amount of AC power even when it is not turned on. USING THE REMOTE CONTROL Many of the CD changer's buttons also have a corresponding button on the remote control, and you can press either the CD changer or remote control button to control the function. To use the remote control, point it directly at the infrared sensor on the left side of the display and firmly press the desired button. LOADING CDs IMPORTANT: Make sure you have removed the shipping screw and sleeve from the bottom of the CD changer before you load and play CDs (see "Removing the Shipping Screw", Faxback Doc. # 18299). Follow these steps to load CDs. 1. Turn on the receiver or amplifier. 2. If necessary, press POWER on the CD changer to turn it on. NOTE: Wait a few seconds until the CD changer displays DISC or NO DISC before continuing. 3. Before you load a CD, assign a number to it in one of two ways: Repeatedly press DISC SKIP - or DISC SKIP + until DISC and the desired disc number appear. -OR- Enter a 2-digit disc number using the DISC SELECT number keys on the CD changer or remote control. NOTES: There are 24 disc numbers. The bottom of the display shows a circle around the disc number when the disc is loaded. If you choose a disc number that already has a CD loaded in it, the CD changer selects that CD. If you try to load a CD without assigning a number to it, the CD changer might eject a CD you previously loaded. 4. Press LOAD/EJECT on the CD changer. The CD slot opens, LOAD DISC Scrolls across the display, and the selected disc number flashes. To load a CD, hold it vertically, then gently insert it about halfway through the CD slot, label side to the right, within 10 seconds. The CD changer automatically pulls the CD inside. CAUTIONS: Do not load anything other than 5-inch CDs into the CD changer. Do not load single 3-inch CDs or 3-inch CDs with any type of adapter device. The CD changer might be damaged. Do not force the CD into the CD slot. Do not try to hold on to the CD or pull the CD out while the changer is pulling it in. To avoid pinching your fingers or damaging the CD or the CD changer, do not put your finger in the CD's center hole while inserting a CD. NOTE: If the CD slot closes before you load the CD, simply press LOAD/ EJECT again and insert the CD. When you load a CD, either ENTER CATEGORY or CATEGORY IS and a previously assigned category and subcategory name (if any) scrolls across the display twice. To assign a category and subcategory name to the CD, see "Using Category and Subcategory Names." 5. Repeat Steps 3-4 to load more CDs (up to 24). SELECTING A CD Select a CD by entering its disc number using either of the following methods: Repeatedly press DISC SKIP - or DISC SKIP + until the disc number appears. Enter a 2-digit disc number using the DISC SELECT number keys. EJECTING CDS 1. With play stopped, select the CD you want to eject. 2. Press LOAD/EJECT on the CD changer. EJECTING DISC and the disc number scroll across the display, the CD slot opens, and the mechanism ejects the CD. CAUTION: Do not try to load a CD while EJECTING DISC and the disc number are scrolling across the display. This can damage the CD changer and the CD. 3. Gently remove the CD from the CD slot within 10 seconds. CAUTIONS: Do not try to hold on to the CD or pull the CD out while the changer is ejecting it. To avoid pinching your fingers or damaging the CD or the CD changer, do not put your finger in the CD's center hole while removing a CD. If you do not remove the CD within 10 seconds, the CD changer automatically pulls it in again. Never try to remove the CD while the CD changer is pulling it in. Wait until the CD is fully loaded, then press LOAD/EJECT again. 4. Repeat Steps 1-3 above to remove more CDs. PLAYING CDs 1. If necessary, press POWER on the CD changer to turn it on. NOTE: Wait a few seconds until the CD changer displays DISC and the current DISC number before continuing. 2. Select the CD you want to play. NOTE: If you select a number that does not have a disc assigned to it, NO DISC appears. 3. Set your receiver's or amplifier's audio input switch to the position that matches the jack where you connected the CD changer (for example, CD, AUX, or TAPE). 4. Press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer (or >/ll on the remote control). > PLAY appears, and SEARCHING DISC and the CD'S number might scroll across the display. After a few seconds, the selected CD begins to play from Track 1. While a CD plays, the CD changer displays the following. The current disc number (blinking inside the graphic) The current disc number and track number The current index number if the CD has index numbers (numbers that mark sections within a track) or 1 if the CD does not have index numbers Elapsed time for the current track (in minutes and seconds) NOTES: If DISC ERROR scrolls across the display or if the graphic around the current disc number blinks, the CD might be loaded incorrectly or scratched. Press LOAD/EJECT on the CD changer to eject the CD, then fix and reload it. A sudden shock or jolt while a CD is playing might suddenly change the CD's rotation speed or make the CD changer skip the current track. This might momentarily mute or distort the sound. This is not a malfunction. To temporarily stop play, press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer (or > /ll on the remote control). > PLAY flashes on the display. To resume play, press PLAY PAUSE (or >/ll) again. 5. To stop play, press STOP/CLEAR. DISPLAYING INFORMATION ABOUT CDs To display additional information about the current CD, repeatedly press DISPLAY while the CD is playing. As you press DISPLAY, the following information appears. Category name assigned to the CD (if any) Subcategory name assigned to the CD (if any) Remaining time for the current track (in minutes and seconds) Remaining time for the entire CD (in minutes and seconds) Elapsed time for the current track (in minutes and seconds) NOTES: You cannot display the remaining time for the entire CD during programmed play, time edit, or program edit recording. A few seconds after you press STOP/CLEAR, the CD changer displays the selected CD's total play time. USING CATEGORY AND SUBCATEGORY NAMES You can assign a category name to each loaded CD, and then use category names to select and play only those CDs that contain the type of music you want to hear. In addition to assigning category names to loaded CDs, you can further define music styles within the same category by assigning your own subcategory name to the CD. For example, if you load two jazz CDs and assign a JAZZ category name, you can assign subcategory names such as DIXIE or FUSION. When you assign a category name and subcategory name to a CD, the CD changer displays both names when you select the disc number. NOTES: The CD changer maintains the selected category and subcategory name by disc number. If you eject a CD, then load another CD as that same disc number, the same category and subcategory names apply to the new CD until you change them. The CD changer saves category and subcategory names even when AC power is turned off. You must assign a category to a loaded CD before you can assign a subcategory to it. ASSIGNING PRESET CATEGORY NAMES TO CDs These are the category names the CD changer has as preset names: ROCK (Rock) C/W (Country and western) R/B (Rhythm and blues) JAZZ (Jazz) EASY (Easy listening) SHOW (Show tunes) CLAS (Classical) Follow these steps to assign a preset category name. 1. With play stopped, select the desired CD (see "Selecting a CD" above). 2. Repeatedly press ENTER CATEGORY MAIN on the CD changer until CATEGORY and the desired category name flash on the display. Each time you press ENTER CATEGORY MAIN, the CD changer displays the category names in the following order. 1. ROCK 2. C/W 3. R/B 4. JAZZ 5. EASY 6. SHOW 7. CLAS 8. Previously entered Category name, if any (see "Creating and Assigning New Category Names" above). 9. --------(Blank for creating a new category name.) 3. When you see the category name you want, press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control). (category name) IS MEMORIZED scrolls across the display. CREATING AND ASSIGNING NEW CATEGORY NAMES When a CD is loaded, you can create a new category name that contains up to 8 characters (including letters, numbers and special characters) and assign the new category name to the disc number. 1. With play stopped, select the desired CD (see "Selecting a CD"). 2. Repeatedly press ENTER CATEGORY MAIN on the CD changer until -------- appears on the display and CATEGORY and the first - in -------- flash. 3. Repeatedly press the appropriate DISC SELECT key until the desired character flashes on the display. For example, to select L, repeatedly press 4/JKL until L flashes on the display. NOTE: If you make a mistake, repeatedly press <>/>>| once. The next - in --------flashes. 5. Repeat Step 3-4 until the display shows the new category name. 6. After you enter the new category name, press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control) to store it. The category name you entered and IS MEMORIZED scrolls across the display. CREATING AND ASSIGNING SUBCATEGORY NAMES You can create subcategory names that contain up to 8 characters (including letters, numbers and special characters) and assign the subcategory name to a disc number that already has a category name. NOTE: You must assign a category name to the CD before you can assign a subcategory name to it. 1. With play stopped, select the desired CD (see "Selecting a CD" above). 2. Press ENTER CATEGORY MAIN on the CD changer once. The category name you assigned to the disc number and CATEGORY flash. 3. Press ENTER CATEGORY SUB on the CD changer once. -------- appears on the display and SUB CATEGORY and the first - in -------- flash. 4. Repeatedly press the appropriate DISC SELECT key until the desired character flashes on the display. For example, to select L, repeatedly press 4/JKL until L flashes on the display. NOTE: If you make a mistake, repeatedly press <-<-/<-<- until the incorrect character flashes, then repeat this step. 5. Press >->-/->-> once. The next-in -------- flashes. 6. Repeat Steps 4-5 until the display shows the new subcategory name. 7. After you enter the subcategory name, press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control) to store your entry. The category name, a period, the subcategory name you entered, and IS MEMORIZED scrolls across the display. CHANGING/ERASING CATEGORY AND SUBCATEGORY NAMES NOTES: When you change or erase a disc's category name, the CD changer automatically erases any previously assigned subcategory names. When you erase a subcategory name, the CD changer automatically erases the category name, also. To change a CD's category name, simply assign a different one in its place. To erase a CD's category and subcategory names, follow these steps. 1. With play stopped, select the desired CD (see "Selecting a CD" above). 2. Press ENTER CATEGORY MAIN on the CD changer once. The category name and CATEGORY flash on the display. 3. Press CLEAR on the CD changer once. PRESS CLEAR KEY AGAIN TO ERASE scrolls across the display twice. 4. Press CLEAR on the CD changer again before PRESS CLEAR KEY AGAIN TO ERASE disappears, and ERASED appears for about 1 second. PLAYING CDs BY CATEGORY/SUBCATEGORY NOTE: You can randomly play tracks on CDs by category or subcategory (see "Random Play"). Follow these steps to play only those CDs assigned to a specific category or subcategory. 1. With play stopped, select a category by repeatedly pressing CATEGORY SELECT MAIN. As each category name appears, the display shows only the disc numbers assigned to that category. 2. Select a subcategory name, if any, by repeatedly pressing CATEGORY SELECT SUB. NOTE: If you have not assigned a subcategory name to any disc number. SUB CATEGORY NOT USED scrolls across the display. As each subcategory name appears, the display shows only the disc numbers assigned to that subcategory. 3. Press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer (or ARROW RIGHT/ll on the remote control). ARROW RIGHT PLAY appears, and SEARCHING DISC and the CD's disc number scrolls across the display. After a few seconds, the first CD in the category or subcategory begins to play. 4. After playing all CDs with the same category or subcategory name, the CD changer stops. Press STOP/CLEAR to stop play before the CD changer plays the last track on the last CD. The category selection is still in memory after playback is over. To clear the category selection, with play stopped, press STOP/CLEAR. SPECIAL FEATURES SKIP PLAY To skip forward or backward to a track, repeatedly press ->->/->-> or <-<-/<-<- while a CD is playing or paused until the desired track number appears. The CD changer stops playing the current track, skips to the selected track, then plays the track. To skip to a track on another CD, repeatedly press REPEAT until REPEAT CONTINUE appears on the display. Then repeatedly press ->->/->-> or <-<-/<-<- until the desired track number appears. The CD changer stops playing the current track, then skips to and plays the selected track. NOTES: If you use skip play while a CD is paused, the CD remains paused when the CD changer skips to the selected track. If you use skip play during random play, the CD changer cancels random play. See "Random Play" below. AUDIBLE SEARCH To search for a particular section of a track, press and hold down ->->/->-> or <-<-/<-<- while a CD is playing or paused. The CD changer rapidly plays the CD either forward or backward (like cueing or reviewing a cassette tape) and automatically reduces the CD's volume. Release ->->/->-> or <-<-/<-<- to resume normal play. NOTES: If you use audible search while a CD is paused, the CD remains paused when you release ->->/->->or <-<-/<-<- to resume normal play. If you pass the end of the current CD while pressing and holding down ->->/->->, the CD changer advances to Track 1 on the next CD, unless you select REPEAT ALL (see "Repeat Play" below). If you press and hold down <-<-/<-<-, the CD changer pauses at the beginning of Track 1 on the current CD. If you use audible search during random play, the CD changer cancels random play. See "Random Play" below. RANDOM PLAY During random play, the CD changer randomly selects and plays tracks. NOTE: You cannot use skip play or audible search during random play. Follow these steps to select random play. NOTE: To play random selections from a category or subcategory, press CATEGORY SELECT MAIN or CATEGORY SELECT MAIN then CATEGORY SELECT SUB on the CD changer or remote control. 1. When play is stopped, press RANDOM on the CD changer or remote control once to select RANDOM 1, or twice to select RANDOM 2. RANDOM 1 selects a track from a CD and plays the track, then repeatedly selects another CD and plays another track. RANDOM 2 selects a CD and plays all of the CD's tracks randomly, then repeatedly selects another CD and plays all of that CD's tracks randomly. To cancel random play, repeatedly press RANDOM with play stopped until RANDOM 1 and RANDOM 2 disappear from the display. 2. Press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer (or >/ll on the remote control) to start random play. NOTES: During random play, the CD changer might select a non-existent track number and display DISC ERROR for a few seconds until it selects another track number. This is not a malfunction. During random play, the CD changer never selects the same track twice in a row from a single CD. However, the CD changer might select the same track more than once. To randomly select another track on the same CD or on another CD during random play, repeatedly press RANDOM. 3. To stop random play, press STOP/CLEAR on the CD changer or remote control INTRO SCAN Simply press INTRO to play the first 10 seconds of each track on the current CD. INTRO appears on the display. Press INTRO again to return to normal play. NOTES: If you press INTRO during normal play, intro scan starts from the next track on the CD. You can use the skip play feature during intro scan. See "Skip Play" above. Follow these steps to play the first 10 seconds of each track of each loaded CD at random. 1. With play stopped, press RANDOM on the CD changer or remote control once to select RANDOM 1, or twice to select RANDOM 2. 2. Press INTRO on the CD changer or remote control. The CD changer plays the first 10 second of each track at random. 3. To stop random intro scan play, press STOP/CLEAR on the CD changer or remote control. REPEAT PLAY You can repeat a single track on any loaded CD, all tracks on a selected CD, all tracks on all loaded CDs, or a programmed sequence (see Programmed Play" below). NOTE: To cancel repeat play at any time, repeatedly press REPEAT until REPEAT ONE, REPEAT ALL, and REPEAT CONTINUE disappear from the display. To repeat a single track, repeatedly press REPEAT until REPEAT ONE appears on the display To repeat all tracks on a CD or in a programmed sequence, repeatedly press REPEAT until REPEAT ALL appears on the display. To repeat all tracks on all loaded CDs, repeatedly press REPEAT until REPEAT CONTINUE appears on the display. NOTES: If you select a category to play, only tracks from CDs in the categrory repeat when you select REPEAT CONTINUE (see "Playing CDs by Category/Subcategory"). You cannot use REPEAT CONTINUE during programmed play. PROGRAMMED PLAY You can program up to 48 selections from all loaded CDs to play in any order you choose. A selection can be a single track or all tracks on a CD. NOTES: You can store a selection more than once in a programmed sequence. You cannot display the remaining time for the entire CD during programmed play. Programming and Playing a Sequence 1. With play stopped, press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control). 1 AL 1 appears on the display, and PROG. flashes. 2. Select the desired CD. Note: To store all tracks on the selected CD, skip to Step 4. 3. Repeatedly press <-<-/<-<- or ->->/->-> until the display shows the track you want to program. 4. Press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control). The CD changer programs your selection, and the number under STEP on the display indicates how many selections you have made. 5. Repeat Steps 2-4 to program more selections. Note: You can program up to 48 selections. If you try to program more, FULL appears. 6. To play the programmed sequence, press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer ( or >/ll on the remote control). After the CD changer plays the last track in the programmed sequence, it stops but the programmed sequence is still in memory. To clear the sequence, see "Clearing the Programmed Sequence." NOTES: If you programmed a non-existent track (for example, Track 10 when that CD has only nine tracks), it skips the track and plays the next programmed track. You can use skip play during programmed play (see "Skip Play" above). You can use audible search during programmed play by pressing and holding down <-<-/<-<- or ->->/->->. When the CD changer reaches the end of a track during audible search, it pauses at the beginning of the next programmed track. When the CD changer reaches the beginning of the current track, it pauses there. Reviewing the Programmed Sequence With play stopped, repeatedly press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control). The display shows the following programming information for each selection in the sequence. DISC and the selected CD's disc number. TRACK and the track number or AL. STEP and the selection number. This number shows the order in which the selection plays within the sequence. Adding Selections to the Programmed Sequence NOTE: You cannot add selections if the existing programmed sequence already has 48 selections. 1. With play stopped, repeatedly press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control) until -------- appears on the display. 2. Repeat Steps 2-3 under "Programming and Playing a Sequence" as necessary to add selections to the programmed sequence. 3. Press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control). Changing a Programmed Sequence 1. With play stopped, repeatedly press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control) until the selection you want to change appears. 2. Select the disc number of the CD you want to change to. To change the displayed track number to a new track number, repeatedly press <-<-/<-<- or ->->/->-> until the new track number is displayed. 3. To store the change, press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control). Clearing the Programmed Sequence The CD changer saves a programmed sequence as long as power is supplied to the CD changer, even if you press POWER to turn it off. Any of the following clears a programmed sequence. Press STOP/CLEAR on the CD changer or remote control when a CD is not playing. Press EDIT on the CD changer when a CD is not playing. If the CD changer is connected to a switched AC outlet on a receiver or amplifier, turning the receiver or amplifier off. Unpluging the CD changer's AC power cord from the AC outlet or switched AC outlet. EDIT RECORDING The CD changer can automatically select the tracks on a CD that will fit on each side of a cassette tape (time edit), or let you program the tracks you want to record (program edit). TIME EDIT 1. Select the disc number of the CD you want to record. 2. Press EDIT on the CD changer. EDIT flashes on the display. Then, after a few seconds, PUSH EDIT and the following information alternately flash. DISC and the current disc number TRACK and the number of tracks Total play time for the entire CD (in minutes and seconds) 3. Use one of these methods to enter the combined length of your cassette tape. Repeatedly press EDIT until the displayed time is closest to the length of your cassette tape. Each time you press EDIT, the display changes: C--46 C--54 C--60 C--74 C--90 C-- -- -- If the cassette tape does not exactly match one of the displayed tape lengths, repeatedly press <-<-/<-<- or ->->/->-> to select the correct tape length. For example, if the cassete tape is 50 minutes long, repeatedly press EDIT until C--46 appears, then press ->->/->-> until C--50 appears. Press EDIT, then enter the time (in minutes) of the cassette tape length using the DISC SELECT number keys on the CD changer or remote control. For example, if the cassette tape is 65 minutes long, press 65 on the remote control. 4. Load a cassette tape into the cassette recorder and set it to record. 5. To record tracks onto that side of the cassette tape, press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer (or > /ll on the remote control). PROG. SIDE A and TIME EDIT appear on the display. The CD changer automatically selects the tracks on the CD that will fit on one side of the cassette tape, then displays the time of the tracks that will fit on the tape (first for Side A, then for Side B). Then the CD changer plays the tracks while the cassette recorder records the playback. When the CD changer plays the last track that will fit on that side of the cassette, it stops playback. NOTES: During time edit recording, only the DISPLAY, STOP/CLEAR, POWER, and LOAD/EJECT keys work. The CD changer pauses 8 seconds after you press PLAY/PAUSE or ARROW RIGHT/ll to let the cassette recorder move past the tape leader. The CD changer automatically inserts a 5-second blank space at the end of each track. 6. After the CD changer stops playback, turn the cassette tape over (if necessary), fully rewind it, then set it to record again. 7. To record tracks onto the other side of the cassette tape, press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer (or ARROW RIGHT/ll on the remote control). The CD changer automatically selects the tracks on the CD that will fit on this side, then plays the tracks while the cassette recorder records the playback. Repeatedly press STOP/CLEAR at any time to cancel time edit recording. 8. The CD changer stops after it plays the last track that will fit on this side of the cassette and displays the total length of the music recorded onto the tape. The edit information you entered is still in memory. To erase it, press STOP/CLEAR. PROGRAM EDIT Follow these steps to program the tracks you want to record. 1. Follow Steps 1-3 under "Time Edit" above. 2. Press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control). SIDE A and EDIT appear on the display, and PROG. flashes. 3. Repeatedly press <-<-/<-<- or ->->/->-> to select the desired track. 4. Press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control). The display shows the remaining time for the first side of the cassette tape. 5. Repeat Steps 3-4 to program more tracks to record on this side. When the playback length of the displayed track exceeds the remaining time on one side of the cassette tape, the time display blinks. If this happens, either: Select a shorter track. Press MEMORY on the CD changer (or MEMO on the remote control). SIDE A on the display changes to SIDE B and the CD changer automatically stores the track to record as the first track on the next side. 6. Repeat Steps 3-4 to program the tracks to record on the next side. NOTE: If the selected track exceeds the remaining time for the second side, ERROR appears. 7. Load a cassette tape into your cassette recorder and set it to record. 8. To record tracks onto that side of the cassette tape, press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer (or >/ll) on the remote control). The CD changer displays the time of the tracks that will fit on the tape (first for Side A, then for Side B). Then the CD changer plays the tracks while the cassette recorder records the playback. When the CD changer plays the last track you programmed for Side A, it stops playback. 9. After the CD changer stops playback, turn the cassette tape over (if necessary), fully rewind it, then set it to record again. 10. To record tracks onto the other side of the cassette tape, press PLAY/PAUSE on the CD changer (or >/ll on the remote control). Repeatedly press STOP/CLEAR at any time to cancel program edit recording. 11. The CD changer stops after playing back the last selection and displays the total length of the music recorded onto the tape. The edit information you entered is still in memory. To erase it, press STOP/CLEAR. (CD 11/29/95)
