D-844K Sony Car Discman (420-5057) Operation Faxback Doc. # 31574 USING THE REMOTE CONTROL (D-844K) You can operate the remote control only when the power is supplied through the DC IN 4.5 V jack. The buttons on the remote control have the same function as those with the same names on the main unit. FUNCTION BUTTONS: LEVEL +/- (volume) SUR (surround) [] (stop) /\ (open/close) >|| (play/pause) |<<.>>| (AMS*/search) * Automatic Music Sensor DSP HOW TO INSTALL BATTERIES Insert two R6 (size AA) batteries (not supplied) into the battery compartment. WHEN TO REPLACE THE BATTERIES The batteries usually last for about 3 months. When the remotely controllable area becomes smaller or the illumination of the buttons becomes darker, replace all the batteries with new ones. TO ADJUST THE VOLUME Press LEVEL + or - button. The volume is displayed in 10 steps from "01" to "10". CONTROLLABLE AREA Controllable area is as outlined below*. Point the remote control towards the remote sensor of the unit. *20 degrees either side and top to bottom of a center line at a maximum distance of 10 ft. (3m) PLAYING TRACKS REPEATEDLY (Repeat Play) You can play tracks repeatedly in normal, and shuffle play modes. Repeat all the tracks or only one track. To repeat all the tracks 1. Press MODE repeatedly during play until "PLAY" appears. 2. Press SELECT repeatedly until the "->" indicator appears. To cancel repeat play, press SELECT repeatedly until no play mode indicator is displayed. To repeat a single track 1. Press MODE repeatedly until "PLAY" appears, while the track you want to repeat is playing. 2. Press SELECT repeatedly until the "-> 1" indication appears. To repeat another track, press |<< or >>|. To cancel repeat play, press SELECT repeatedly until no play mode indicator is displayed. PLAYING TRACKS IN RANDOM ORDER (Shuffle Play) You can play the tracks in a CD in random order. 1. Press MODE repeatedly during play until "PLAY" appears. 2. Press SELECT repeatedly until the "SHUF" indication appears. The tracks play in random order. To cancel shuffle play, press SELECT repeatedly until no play mode indication is displayed. NOTE: During shuffle play, you cannot return to the previous tracks by pressing |<<. USING OTHER FUNCTIONS To select audio emphasis (DSP) You can enjoy four types (D-844K)/two types (D-840K/842K) of sound effects with the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) function. 1. Press MODE repeatedly during play until "DSP" appears. 2. Press SELECT repeatedly until the effect you want appears. Each time you press SELECT, the DSP mode cycles as listed below: DSP mode Select to BASS symbol Emphasize bass. "BASS symbol" is more effective. BASS symbol CAR symbol* Improve audibility in a noisy place such as in a CAR symbol* car. "CAR symbol" is more effective. *D-844K only To select audio emphasis using the remote control, press DSP repeatedly. (D-844K only) To cancel the DSP function, press SELECT repeatedly until no DSP indication is displayed. NOTE: If the sound is distorted when emphasizing bass, turn down the volume. TO ENJOY SURROUND EFFECT (D-844K only) You can add a rich and spacious effect, to the original sound. "{{{{SUR}}}}" is more effective than "{{{SUR}}}". 1. Press MODE repeatedly until "SUR" appears. 2. Press SELECT repeatedly until the effect you want appears. To cancel the surround effect, press SELECT repeatedly until no indication appears. To enjoy surround effect using the remote control, press SUR repeatedly. TO PREVENT SOUND FROM SKIPPING The SUPER ESP (Super Electronic Shock Protection) (D-844K/842K) or ESP (D-840K) function prevents the sound from skipping by using a buffer memory that stores music data for about 10 seconds (D-844K/842K) or 3 seconds D-840K). Use this function when listening during a walk or playing in a car. 1. Press MODE repeatedly until the "ESP" indication appears. 2. Press SELECT repeatedly until "Super ESP" (D-844K/842K) or "ESP" (D-840K) appears. To cancel the SUPER ESP (D-844K/842K) or ESP (D-840K) function, press SELECT repeatedly until no ESP mode indication is displayed. NOTES: Playing may stop when the Discman gets a strong shock even when the SUPER ESP or ESP function is on. When you record a CD on a cassette tape using a tape recorder that has a blank search function, cancel the SUPER ESP or ESP function. If you hear a noise or sound skip when: - listening to a dirty or scratched CD. - listening to an audio test CD or, - the Discman receives continuous shock, set the SUPER ESP function to off. Sound may skip if you set the SUPER ESP or ESP function to on during play. TO LOCK THE BUTTONS AND THE LID You can lock your Discman and the lid to prevent accidental operation. Slide HOLD/LOCK in the direction of the arrow. When you press any button, "Hol d" appears. For D-844K, you can still operate the until with the operation on the remote control. TO UNLOCK, slide HOLD/LOCK back. To resume playing from the point you stopped the CD (Resume Play) Normally, every time you stop and play, playing starts from the beginning of the CD. The resume play function, however, lets you listen to from the point at which you last turned off the Discman. Set RESUME to ON. To cancel resume play, set RESUME to OFF. NOTES: Even if RESUME is set to ON, playing starts from the beginning when you open the lid. The resume point may be inaccurate by about 30 seconds. TO TURN OFF THE BEEP You can turn off the beep that sounds as you operate you Discman. While you press and hold down [] STOP/DISPLAY OFF, connect the power source. TO LISTEN WITH THE HEADPHONES Connect the headphones to the headset jack firmly. (EB 3/27/96)
