CD-6600 Compact Disc Automatic Changer (420-5059) Operation I Faxback Doc. # 32150 CONNECTING HEADPHONES You can connect a pair of headphones (not supplied) with a 1/4-inch plug to the CD changer to listen to it in private. Your local Radio Shack store has a wide selection of headphones. To connect headphones to the CD changer, insert the headphones' plug into the CD changer's PHONES jack. Then, when you play a CD, turn VOLUME clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust the volume. NOTE: VOLUME only affects the headphones' volume level, not the volume you hear through the receiver/amplifier's speakers. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. BASIC OPERATION WARNING: To protect your hearing, set VOLUME on the CD changer and the volume on your receiver or amplifier to its lowest level before you load and play a CD. CAUTION: Do not set VOLUME on the CD changer or the volume on your receiver or amplifier too high while playing soft or quiet portions of a music program. Due to the CD changer's wide dynamic range, the speakers or optional headphones might be damaged if the music program includes a sudden loud passage. USING THE REMOTE CONTROL Many of the CD changer's buttons also have a corresponding button on the remote control, and you can press either the CD changer or remote control button to control the function. NOTE: You must turn on the CD changer by pressing POWER/STANDBY until POWER ON scrolls the display before you can use the remote control to operate the CD changer (see "Turning the CD Changer ON and Off", below). To use the remote control, point its front directly at the infrared sensor on the left side of the CD changer above the display, then firmly press the desired button or turn CATEGORY/DISC. TURNING THE CD CHANGER ON AND OFF To turn on the CD changer, either: Press POWER/STANDBY until POWER ON scrolls across the display. Make sure POWER/STANDBY is pressed in (to STANDBY), then press POWER on the remote control. When you turn on the CD changer, the CD tray rotates to search for loaded CDs. If there are loaded CD's, the display shows DISC, the current disc number, and each loaded CD's disc number surrounded by a graphic. If there are no loaded CD's, the display shows DISC 1, and NO DISC. NOTE: If you connected the CD changer to a switched AC outlet and leave POWER/STANDBY pressed in, you can turn on the receiver or amplifier to turn on the CD changer. To turn off the CD changer, either: Press POWER/STANDBY until GOOD-BYE scrolls across the display. Press POWER on the remote control. NOTES: If you connected the CD changer to a switched AC outlet and leave POWER/STANDBY pressed in, you can turn off the receiver or amplifier to turn off the CD changer. If you do not plan to use the CD changer for a long time, disconnect it from the AC outlet. The CD changer draws a small amount of AC power even when it is not turned on. LOADING CDs IMPORTANT: Make sure you have removed the shipping screw and sleeve from the bottom of the CD changer before you load and play CD's (see "Removing the Shipping Screw", on Faxback Doc. # 32149). Follow these steps to load CD's. 1. Turn on your receiver or amplifier. 2. If necessary, Press POWER/STANDBY on the CD changer or POWER on the remote control to turn on the CD changer. Enter a 2-digit disc number using the DISC SELECT number keys on the CD changer or the number keys on the remote control. NOTE: There are 60 disc numbers. The bottom rows of the display show a semicircle around a disc number when a CD is loaded in that position. If you choose a disc number that already has a CD loaded in it, the CD changer selects that CD. 4. Press LOAD/EJECT on the CD changer. The CD slot opens, LOAD DISC scrolls across the display, and the selected disc number flashes. To load a CD hold it vertically, then gently insert it about halfway through the CD slot, label side to the right, within 10 seconds. The CD changer automatically pulls the CD inside. CAUTIONS: Do not load anything other than 5-inch CD's into the CD changer. Do not load single 3-inch CD's or 3-inch CDs with any type of adapter device. This could damage the CD changer. Do not force the CD into the CD slot. Do not try to hold on to the CD or pull the CD out while the changer is pulling it in. To avoid pinching your fingers or damaging the CD or the CD changer, do not put your finger in the CD slot or the CD's center hole while inserting a CD. NOTE: If the CD slot closes before you load the CD, simply press LOAD/EJECT again and insert the CD. When you load a CD, either ENTER CATEGORY or CATEGORY IS and a previously assigned category and subcategory name (If any) scrolls across the display twice. NO DISC appears. EJECTING CD's 1. With play stopped, select the CD you want to eject. 2. Press LOAD/EJECT on the CD changer. EJECTING DISC and the disc number scroll across the display, the CD slot opens, and the CD changer ejects the CD. CAUTION: Do not try to load a CD while EJECTING DISC and the disc number are scrolling across the display. This can damage the CD changer and the CD. 3. Gently remove the CD from the CD slot within 10 seconds. CAUTIONS: Do not try to hold on to the CD or pull the CD out while the CD changer is ejecting it. To avoid pinching your fingers or damaging the CD or the CD changer, do not put your finger in the CD slot or the CD's center hole while removing a CD. If you do not remove the CD within 10 seconds, the CD changer automatically pulls it in again. Never try to remove the CD while the CD changer is pulling it in. Wait until the CD is fully loaded, then press LOAD/EJECT again. 4. Repeat Steps 1-3 to remove more CD's. PLAYING CD's 1. If necessary, turn on the CD changer. NOTE: Wait a few seconds until the CD changer displays DISC, the current disc number, the total number of tracks on the CD, and the total playing time of the CD before continuing. 2. Press PLAY/PAUSE. > PLAY appears, and SEARCHING DISC and the CD's number scroll across the display. After a few seconds, the selected CD begins to play from Track 1. Press LOAD/EJECT on the CD changer to eject the CD, then fix and reload it. A sudden shock or jolt while a CD is playing might suddenly change the CD's rotation speed or make the CD changer skip the current track. This might momentarily mute or distort the sound. This is not a malfunction. To temporarily stop play, press PLAY/PAUSE. > PLAY flashes on the display. To resume play, press PLAY/PAUSE again. Although the CD changer displays any index numbers a CD has, the CD changer cannot automatically skip to their location. 5. To stop play, press STOP. DISPLAYING INFORMATION ABOUT CDs To display additional information about the current CD, repeatedly press DISPLAY while the CD is playing. Each time you press DISPLAY, the information changes in this order: 1. Category name assigned to the CD (if any) 2. Subcategory name assigned to the CD (if any) 3. Remaining time for the current track (in minutes and seconds) 4. Remaining time for the entire CD (in minutes and seconds) 5. Elapsed time for the current track (in minutes and seconds) NOTES: If the current track number is 56 or higher, the CD changer displays --, -- instead of the remaining time for the current track.
