Optimus Lab-1000 Semi-Automatic Belt Drive Turntable
(420-2022) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 32545

UNPACKING THE TURNTABLE

Remove the turntable assembly with the attached dust cover from the box.
Then carefully unpack the following additional parts.

Turntable platter with attached rubber drive belt

   Rubber mat

   Cartridge with attached stylus

   45 RPM adapter

CAUTION: The turntable platter is precisely balanced. Be especially
careful not to bend or damage it.

NOTE: Be sure to save the turntable's box and packing materials in case
you later need to move or store the turntable.

ASSEMBLING THE TURNTABLE

  1. Open the dust cover.

  2. Carefully place the turntable platter onto the turntable spindle.

  3. Turn the turntable platter until one of the platter's three larger
holes is above the drive motor spindle on the turntable's left side.

  4. Stretch the rubber drive belt on the inside of the turntable platter
      over the drive motor's spindle.

CAUTION: Be sure that the inside of the turntable platter, the
rubber drive belt, and the drive motor's spindle are free
of grease and other foreign matter, and that the drive belt
                is not twisted.

  5. Turn the turntable platter clockwise until one of the platter's three
larger holes is above PRE-AMP-IN/PHONO-OUT near the top.

CAUTION: To avoid damaging the turntable, never turn the platter
                counterclockwise.

  6. Before you continue with the assembly, you must set PRE-AMP-IN/ PHONO
OUT for the output type you are using. You can use the LAB 1000 with
a receiver or amplifier with a low-level phone input (such as left
and right PHONO jacks), or with a high-level input (such as left and
right AUX, TV, TAPE, or CD jacks). See "Connecting the Turntable to
      Your Receiver/Amplifier", on Faxback Doc. # 32546.

If you are connecting the turntable to a low-level phono input, set
      PRE-AMP-IN/PHONO-OUT to PHONO-OUT.

If you are connecting the turntable to a high-level input, set
      PRE-AMP-IN/PHONO-OUT to PRE-AMP-IN.

NOTE: If you are not sure which type of input your receiver or
amplifier has, check your receiver's or amplifier's owner's
             manual.

  7. Place the rubber mat, ridged side down, on top of the turntable
      platter.

  8. Turn the turntable platter by hand clockwise six or seven times to
clear the tone arm mechanism and check the turntable's operation.

  9. Remove the tone arm tie securing the tone arm to the tone arm rest.

 10. Remove the tone arm cushion between the tone arm weight and the
      turntable.

INSTALLING/REPLACING THE CARTRIDGE

  1. Make sure your receiver/amplifier is off (if connected to the
      turntable).

  2. Open the turntable's dust cover.

  3. Be sure the tone arm is locked onto the tone arm rest by sliding the
tone arm lock to the left.

  4. Use a small, flathead screwdriver to remove the set screw on the
right of the headshell (on the end of the tone arm).

  5. To remove an old cartridge, gently pull it straight out from the tone
      arm.

CAUTION: Do not touch the stylus (if attached) while you install a
                cartridge.

6 To install a cartridge, align the cartridge's pins with the holes in
the tone arm, then gently push the cartridge straight in.

  7. Replace the set screw.

NOTES: The supplied cartridge has a stylus assembly (Type T4P) attached
to it. If you install a replacement cartridge, you can either use
the stylus assembly from the old cartridge, or order a new stylus
assembly from your local Radio Shack store. See "Cleaning/Replacing
the Stylus", on Faxback Doc. # 32549.

If you hear rough, distorted sound or no sound at all from the
turntable, the cartridge might need replacing. You can order a
replacement cartridge (AT-3482P, Type T4P) from your local Radio
        Shack store.
