Stereo Infrared Cordless Headphone System (330-1142) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 32611 PLACING THE TRANSMITTER The transmitter sends out an infrared signal in a 30-degree, conical pattern. Since infrared light rays travel in a straight line, place the transmitter at the same height or slightly higher than the expected height of the headphones' receiver. NOTES: Since sunlight also contains infrared light, avoid placing the system outdoors, near a window, in a sun room, or any place where the light might prevent optimum transmission. Do not point the transmitter directly toward a window. The infrared signals do not reflect well and reception might be poor. Do not place any object between the transmitter and the receiver which might block the infrared transmission. An AM radio might interfere with the system's transmitting circuitry. If this occurs, separate the system and the radio by a larger distance. CONNECTING THE TRANSMITTER TO YOUR AUDIO SOURCE You can connect the transmitter to your audio source's stereo headphone jack or to separate left and right audio output phono jacks. To connect the transmitter to your audio source's stereo headphone jack, simply insert the transmitter's built-in 1/8-inch plug into the audio source's 1/8-inch stereo headphone jack. To connect the transmitter to your audio source's audio output RCA jacks, insert the supplied Y-type RCA plug adapter into the transmitter's built-in 1/8-inch plug, then connect the adapter to the audio source's left and right audio output RCA jacks. CONNECTING THE TRANSMITTER TO POWER To power the transmitter, insert the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the power jack on the back of the transmitter. Then plug the adapter's other end into a standard AC outlet. WARNING: To avoid shock hazard, do not leave the adapter plugged into the AC outlet when the barrel plug is not plugged into the transmitter. CAUTION: The supplied AC adapter supplies 18 volts and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip is set to negative and its plug correctly fits the transmitter's DC 18V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the transmitter or the adapter. INSTALLING THE HEADPHONES' BATTERIES To power the headphone receiver, you need two AAA batteries, one in each earpiece. For the best performance, we recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-555. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. To remove each battery compartment cover, push in the tab and pull up the cover in the direction of the arrow. NOTE: If the battery indicator does not light or lights dimly when you set OFF/ON on the headphone receiver to ON, replace the batteries. 2. Remove and discard the old battery (if necessary). CAUTIONS: Never leave dead, old or weak batteries in the headphones. They can leak chemicals and corrode or damage electronic circuits. Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. 3. Place one fresh AAA battery in each earpiece compartment, as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) inside the compartment. 4. Replace the covers. NOTE: If you do not plan to use the headphones for a month or more, remove and store the batteries. (WL/all-05/08/96)
