SCP-72 Stereo Cassette Player (140-1214) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 33706 CONNECTING TO POWER You can power your SCP-72 with two AA alkaline, heavy duty, or nickel cadmium batteries; AC power (using an AC adapter); or your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket (using a DC adapter). Using Battery Power To power the SCP-72 with internal batteries, you need two AA batteries. For the best performance, we recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552. You can also use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat.No. 23-125). These batteries and a battery charger are available at your local Radio Shack store. CAUTION: Do not mix different types of batteries or rechargeable batteries of different capacities. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Open the battery compartment cover by sliding it in the direction of the arrow and lifting it up (the cover is not removeable). 2. Insert the batteries into the compartment, as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked beside the compartment. NOTE: To remove the batteries, push the right battery to the right while lifting out the left battery first. 3. Close the cover. Using AC Power To power the SCP-72 with an AC outlet, you need an AC adapter, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 273-1654. CAUTIONS: You must use an adapter that supplies 3 volts DC power and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must properly fit the SCP's 72's DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage the SCP-72 or the adapter. Be sure you connect the adapter to the SCP-72 before you plug it into the AC outlet, and that you unplug the adapter from the AC outlet before you unplug it from the SCP-72. Follow these steps to power the SCP-72 with AC power. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Connect the barrel plug that fits the SCP-72's jack to the power adapter's cord so the tip is set to negative. 3. Insert the barrel plug into the SCP-72's DC 3V jack. 4. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. Using Vehicle Battery Power To power the SCP-72 with your vehicle's battery power, you need a DC adapter, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 270-1560. CAUTIONS: Your vehicle must have a 12-volt, negative-ground electrical system. You must use an adapter that supplies 3 volts DC power and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative and its plug must properly fit the SCP-72's DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage the SCP-72 or the adapter. Be sure you plug the adapter into the SCP-72 before you plug it into the cigarette-lighter socket, and that you unplug the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket before you unplug it from the SCP-72. Follow these steps to power the SCP-72 with your vehicle's battery power. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Connect the barrel plug that fits the SCP-72's jack to the power adapter's cord so the tip is set to negative. 3. Insert the barrel plug into the SCP-72's DC 3V jack. 4. Plug the other end of the adapter into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. USING HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS To connect headphones or an amplified speaker system, insert the mini plug into the cassette player's headphone jacks. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. USING THE BELT CLIP The belt clip lets you keep your hands free while you listen to the SCP-72. To attach the belt clip to the SCP-72, slide the belt clip's latches into the slots on the cassette player and lift up until it locks into place. To remove the belt clip from the SCP-72, press the middle tab down and slide off the belt clip. (LB/EB 06/21/96)
