The 'gold' side is considered the clear side and the 'red' is considered the colored side.  Insert the cassette into the deck with 'gold-clear' side up or out, press play and allow the brush cleaner to work, then press eject.  For auto reverse decks, the cleaner can be ejected and re-inserted with the 'red-colored ' side up or out and play in reverse mode to cleanse the unit.  Primary ingredient is Isopropyl alcohol.
