CASSETTE DECK OPERATION

Use only Type-1 (normal-bias), Type-2 (CrO2), or Type-4 (metal) tapes.
Your local Radio Shack store sells a complete selection of blank tapes.

You can use your cassette deck for normal playback, continuous play,
recording, or dubbing. This cassette deck also has Dolby B noise
reduction.

NOTE: Before you load a cassette, take up any tape slack by turning the
      tape hub with a pencil or your finger.

SETTING THE TAPE SELECTOR

Set all three tape selectors as follows, depending on the tape type.

PLAYING A CASSETTE TAPE

The following steps apply to both the TAPE 1 and TAPE 2 decks.

1.  Press TAPE. The TAPE indicator lights.

2.  Press STOP/EJECT to open the desired cassette compartment door.

3.  Insert a pre-recorded cassette tape with its open end down and full
    reel to the left. Gently push the compartment door to close it.

4.  If the tape was recorded with DOLBY NR, set DOLBY NR to IN. Otherwise,
    set it to OUT. (See "Using Dolby Noise Reduction.")

5.  Set the tape selector to the proper position (see "Setting the Tape
    Selector").

6.  Press PLAY to start play.

To temporarily stop play, press PAUSE.

To completely stop play, press STOP/EJECT.

USING CONSECUTIVE PLAY

You can set the tape player to play one side of the tape in TAPE 1, then
automatically play one side of the tape in TAPE 2.

1.  Press TAPE. The TAPE indicator lights.

2.  Insert a pre-recorded cassette tape into each deck with its open end
    down and full reel to the left. Gently push the compartment doors to
    close them.

3.  If the tape was recorded with DOLBY NR, set DOLBY NR to IN. Otherwise,
    set it to OUT. (See "Using Dolby Noise Reduction.")

4.  Set the tape selector to the proper position (see "Setting the Tape
    Selector").

5.  Press PLAY to start play.

6.  Press PAUSE and then PLAY on TAPE 2. When TAPE 1 plays to the end of
    one side, it stops. Then, the cassette tape in TAPE 2 plays.

To temporarily stop play on either tape deck, press PAUSE.

To completely stop play, press STOP/EJECT.

USING PAUSE

To temporarily stop playing, recording, or dubbing, press the appropriate
deck's PAUSE. Press PAUSE again to continue playing, recording, or
dubbing.

USING FAST-FORWARD AND REWIND

To fast-forward or rewind the tape, press FAST-F or REWIND on the deck you
are using. Press STOP/EJECT when the tape reaches the desired location.

USING AUTO STOP

Each cassette deck has a full-release stop system to protect the tape and
prevent pinch roller damage. When the tape reaches the end in playback,
recording, fast forward or rewind mode, the tape mechanism automatically
stops.

NOTE: If you press PAUSE while using fast forward or rewind, the full-
      release stop system does not function.

USING THE TAPE COUNTER

As you play or record a tape in the TAPE 2 compartment, the TAPE 2 COUNTER
advances. At the beginning of the tape or selection, reset the counter to
000 by pressing the counter's button. You can then use the tape counter to
quickly locate a specific location on the tape.

NOTE: The tape counter only works for the TAPE 2 deck.

USING DOLBY NOISE REDUCTION

This system's deck uses the DOLBY-B noise reduction system to lower the
level or background noise or "tape hiss" to one third of the original
level.

At the initial recording, the Dolby NR circuit finds the sections where
tape noise is high and automatically increases the recording level of
these sections. When you play the tape, the Dolby NR circuit again finds
but this time reduces the volume of these sections and thus, also the
level of tape hiss.

When listening to a recording, set the DOLBY NR switch to the setting used
for the original recording.

RECORDING FROM THE CD CHANGER, TUNER, TURNTABLE, OR VIDEO EQUIPMENT

Follow these steps to record from the CD changer, tuner, or from an
external audio source such as a turntable, a VCR, or video equipment.

1.  Press CD, TUNER, PHONO, VIDEO 1 or VIDEO 2 to select the audio source
    you want to record.

2.  Load a blank cassette or one you want to record over into TAPE 2 with
    the full reel to the left.

    NOTES:  Be sure the cassette's erase-protection tab is in place. (See
            "Preventing Accidental Erasure.")

            Use only Type-1 (normal-bias), Type-2 (high-bias), or Type-4
            (metal) tapes for recording.

            For programmed material, program the material in advance (see
            "Programmed Play").

3.  Set the tape selector to the proper position (see "Setting the Tape
    Selector").

4.  Press PAUSE on TAPE 2.

5.  Press RECORD on TAPE 2. The RECORD indicator lights.

    CAUTION: If you use a cassette tape with the erase-protection tabs
             removed, do not force down RECORD. This can damage the
             mechanism.

6.  Play the loudest part of the audio source selection you want to record
    and adjust the RECORD LEVEL control so that the lights on the PEAK
    LEVEL METER go above 0 dB for only the loudest sounds.

    NOTE: This gives the recording a high signal-to-noise ratio with
          minimum distortion.

7.  Temporarily turn off the audio source.

8.  Press PAUSE on TAPE 2 again to release it. TAPE 2 begins recording.

9.  Start the audio source.

To temporarily stop recording at any time, press PAUSE on TAPE 2.

To stop recording completely, press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 2.

NOTE: When you play back a recorded AM program, you might hear a high-
      pitched tone or whistling sound. This is called a beat. Set BEAT
      CANCEL on the back of the system to A or B, whichever setting gives
      the best recording.

DUBBING (COPYING) A TAPE

You can use the cassette deck's synchro-start mechanism to easily
duplicate a tape by playing it in TAPE 1 and making a recording of it in
TAPE 2. You can also select between two dubbing speeds (normal or high)
and monitor the tape as you dub it.

NOTES:  Use only Type-1 (normal-bias), Type-2 (CrO2), or Type-4 (metal)
        tapes for recording. Use the same type of tape for TAPE 2 that is
        in TAPE 1.

        Be sure the cassette's erase-protection tab is in place.

        If the original tape was recorded using Dolby NR, the copy also
        has Dolby NR, regardless of the position of the DOLBY NR switch.
        If the tape you copy does not have Dolby NR, you cannot add it to
        the tape you record.

1.  Press TAPE. The TAPE indicator lights.

2.  Load the cassette tape you want to copy into TAPE 1 with the
    cassette's full reel to the left and the side you want to play facing
    you.

3.  Load a blank cassette, or one you want to record over, into TAPE 2
    with the cassette's full reel to the left and the side you want to
    record onto facing you.

4.  Set DUBBING SPEED as follows:

    HIGH - to record in half the normal recording time.
    
    NORMAL - to record at normal speed for quality sound.
    
    NOTE: High speed dubbing produces a slightly lower quality recording,
          but is useful for quicker recording.

5.  Press PAUSE on TAPE 2.

6.  Press RECORD on TAPE 2. The RECORD indicator lights.

    CAUTION: If you use a cassette tape with the erase-protection tabs
             removed, do not force down RECORD. This can damage the
             mechanism.
    
    NOTE: The recording level is preset. Adjusting E-BASS, the frequency
          equalizer, or volume controls does not affect the recording
          level.

7.  Press PLAY on TAPE 1. PAUSE releases on TAPE 2 and dubbing (copying)
    begins.

To temporarily stop recording at any time, press PAUSE on TAPE 2.

To stop dubbing, press STOP/EJECT on both decks.

When a cassette tape reaches the end, its corresponding deck automatically
turns off. However, if the other deck's tape has not ended, that deck con-
tinues recording or playing.

CAUTION: Do not change the dubbing speed during dubbing. Doing so might
         damage the tape or cause distorted recording.

TAPE TIPS

Do not use C-120 tapes. These tapes are very thin, and they can easily
become tangled.

Do not store cassette tapes in places:

  -- with high temperature or high humidity;
  
  -- that are exposed to strong magnetic fields (caused by transformers,
     motors, and so on;
  
  -- where large amounts of dust or dirt exist.
  
  If you play a cassette a number of times, the tape can become tightly
  wound on either hub. A tape that is wound too tightly can cause distor-
  tion, uneven tape motion, or even tape wrap-ups. To restore normal
  tension, fast-forward the entire tape and then completely rewind it.
