STA-3180/3190 (310-3027/28) Operation Faxback Doc. # 9682 Warning: To prevent possible hearing loss, turn VOLUME to MIN before you turn on the receiver or change the program sources. After you turn on the receiver or change the audio source, adjust VOLUME to a comfortable listening level. Follow these steps to use the receiver. 1. Press POWER to turn on the receiver's power. It takes about 5 seconds to begin hearing sound. 2. Select the speakers. If you connected speakers only to the A (or B) SPEAKERS terminals, press SPEAKERS A (or B) to turn on only those speakers. Do not press both SPEAKERS A and B. Doing so disconnects all speakers. If you connected speakers to both the A and B SPEAKERS terminals, do any of the following: Press in SPEAKERS A or B to turn on either pair of speakers for a two-speaker stereo effect. Press in SPEAKERS A and B to turn on both pairs of speakers for a four-speaker stereo effect. Press SPEAKERS A and B to the out position to silence all speakers and listen privately with headphones. 3. Select a program source as follows: To listen to signals from the component connected to TAPE 2 MONITOR, press TAPE 2 MONITOR so T A P E 2 appears on the display. To listen to a source other than TAPE 2 MONITOR, be sure T A P E 2 does not show on the display. If necessary, press TAPE 2 MONITOR so T A P E 2 disappears. Then press TAPE 1 DCC, LD, CD, TUNER, or PHONO. To tune to a radio station, see "Tuning the Radio." 4. Adjust VOLUME clockwise to increase the volume and counterclockwise to decrease it. Or, you can use VOLUME -/- on the remote control. 5. Adjust the BASS and TREBLE controls to suit your preferences. To enhance the bass level, press SUPER BASS. 6. Adjust BALANCE to suit your listening preferences. See "Using the Balance Control." 7. Press POWER to turn off the receiver. Using the Balance Control The BALANCE control lets you adjust the sound balance between the left and right speakers. If you properly position the speakers and your listening area is centered between the speakers, the center control setting is usually best (see "Positioning the Speakers"). For an unusual speaker placement, adjust BALANCE as follows: 1. Select TUNER. Then press FM/AM to select the FM band. 2. Press FM MONO until M O N O appears on the display. The sound is monaural instead of stereo, so each speaker delivers the same output. 3. Turn BALANCE until you hear the sound coming equally from each speaker when you are in the listening area. 4. Press FM MONO until M O N O disappears from the display. Using Headphones To listen through headphones (not supplied), insert the headphone's 1/4-inch plug into the receiver's front panel PHONES jack. To silence the external speakers, set both A and B SPEAKERS to the out position. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Tuning the Radio Notes: For weak signals, we recommend manual tuning. The receiver offers four types of electronic tuning - automatic, manual, direct access, and memory. Manual and Automatic Tuning Follow these steps to quickly find strong FM stations. 1. Press FM/AM to select the band. 2. Press TUNING <- or -> once to manually select the next higher or lower frequency. Or, press and hold down TUNING <- or -> to rapidly change frequencies. Release the button to stop. To automatically search for the next higher or lower station, release TUNING as soon as the display starts to change. The receiver searches up or down the band to the next strong station. Notes: T U N E D appears when you tune to a strong station. To find a weak FM station, press FM MONO until M O N O appears. If you press TUNING -> at the top of the frequency range or TUNING <- at the bottom of the frequency range, the display returns to the other end of the range. S T E R E O appears on the display for FM stereo broadcasts. When you select the AM or FM radio band, the receiver tunes to and displays the frequency last selected in that band. Direct Access Tuning Follow these steps to directly enter a frequency. 1. Press FM/AM to select the desired band. 2. Press DIRECT ACCESS. - - flashes. 3. While - - flashes, enter the desired frequency using the MEMORY PRESETS (1-0) buttons. Notes: You cannot enter frequency numbers outside of the selected band's frequency range. If you try, L O W E R or U P P E R appears. To exit direct access tuning, press DIRECT ACCESS again or do not press a button for 4 seconds. Memory Tuning Memory tuning lets you instantly tune to a stored frequency. You can store up to 30 FM or AM frequencies in the receiver's memory. Follow these steps to store a frequency in a memory location. 1. Press FM/AM to select the desired band. 2. Select the frequency you want to store. If desired, press FM MONO for FM monaural sound. This setting is stored in the memory. 3. Press MEMORY. M E M O R Y flashes on the display for 5 seconds. 4. While M E M O R Y flashes, select the desired memory location by pressing a MEMORY PRESETS button (1 through 0). Pressing a MEMORY PRESETS button once selects the 1-10 range. Pressing the same MEMORY PRESETS button twice selects the 11-20 range. Pressing the same MEMORY PRESETS button three times selects the 21-30 range. For example, to select memory location 24, press 4 three times. The selected frequency and memory number flash and then light steadily. Repeat the above steps to store additional frequencies. Do not enter a frequency while the display flashes. Notes: If you store a frequency in a memory location that already contains a frequency, you replace the previous frequency. If your receiver is disconnected from AC power for several days, it loses all the stored frequencies. To tune to a stored frequency, select the desired memory number by pressing the MEMORY PRESETS buttons, or press TUNER to select the tuner mode and then press STATION -/+ on the remote control to move to the next lower or higher memory location. Scanning Memo Stations To scan the frequencies stored in memory, press TUNER to select the tuner mode, then press MEMORY SCAN (or SCAN on the remote control). To stop scanning, press MEMORY SCAN, SCAN or any of the MEMORY PRESETS buttons. Using FM Mono To receive stereo FM stations in stereo, press FM MONO until M O N O disappears from the display. You can improve the reception of weak FM stations by pressing FM MONO until M O N O appears on the display. This reduces noise while you listen to a weak or distant FM station, but you get monaural instead of stereo sound. Using the RETURN Button Note: If you hear no sound when you press RETURN, be sure that SPEAKERS A or B is set to the on position. Press RETURN to return the controls to the following settings. TAPE 2 MONITOR Off Source TUNER Band FM or AM (Set to the last- tuned frequency. If the receiver cannot receive the frequency, it starts searching for the next strong station.)
