SCP-47 (140-1087) Installation Faxback Doc. # 9690 INSTALLING BATTERIES You will most often operate the SCP-47 from internal batteries. You can also operate the SCP-47 from your vehicle's cigarette lighter socket or an AC outlet. See "Using Another Power Source." To power the SCP-47 from internal batteries, you need two AA batteries. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack's Cat. No. 23-552. You can also use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23-125). If you use rechargeable batteries, you also need a battery charger (such as Cat. No. 23-133). Caution: Do not use non-rechargeable batteries and rechargeable batteries at the same time. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and slide it off. 2. Install the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the battery compartment. 3. Replace the battery compartment's cover. USING HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS To listen to the SCP-47, you need a pair of headphones (not supplied) or amplified speakers (not supplied) with a 1/8-inch plug and a built-in antenna or a cord that acts as an antenna. You can find a wide selection of headphones and speakers at your local Radio Shack store. Connecting Headphones/Speakers Insert the headphone's or speaker's 1/8-inch plug into the SCP-47's (HEADPHONE SYMBOL) jack. Hearing Comfort and Your Health To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. (br/all-02/23/95)
