Component Stereo System (130-1271) Operation Faxback Doc. # 9758 Operating the Remote Control The remote control lets you turn the system on and off, adjust the volume, activate E Bass, or mute the sound from virtually anywhere in the room. INSTALLING BATTERIES The remote control is powered by two AAA batteries (not included). Insert the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. For the best operation and longest life, we recommend you use alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-555. Replace the batteries when operation becomes erratic or after about one year to ensure continued good performance. USING THE REMOTE CONTROL Note: The remote control uses an infrared which is not affected by noise or other interference. It is affected, however, by strong light, so do not allow strong sunlight to fail on the receiver's front panel. 1. Point the remote control at the system. 2. POWER - Press to turn on the system. Press again to turn off the system. 3. Volume UP/Down-Press Volume Up or Volume Down as desired. The volume level changes in steps each time you press the button. Press and hold down to rapidly change. 4. Mute- Press to mute the sound. The Mute indicator lights. Press again to restore the volume level. 5. E Bass- Press to intensify lower tones. The E Bass indicator lights. Operating the Radio Note: You can control the power, volume, and E Bass using the remote control or the controls on the system. Mute only works with the remote control. 1. Power- Press. The Dial Pointer indicator lights. 2. Function- Set to TUNER. 3. Band- Set to AM or FM as desired. 4. Mode- Set to STEREO if FM is selected. If you select AM, set the switch to either MONO or STEREO. 5. Tuning- Tune to the desired station on the appropriate dial scale. The FM Stereo indicator lights if FM is selected, Mode is set to STEREO, and the station selected broadcasts in stereo. Note: Set Mode to MONO when receiving a weak FM station. This improves reception. 6. Volume- Press Volume Up or Volume Down as desired. The volume level changes in steps each time you press the control. Press and hold down to rapidly change. 7. Balance- Keep in mid-position unless the volume level for the right and left speakers sound unequal at your listening position. In that case, turn the control toward LEFT or RIGHT to restore balance. 8. EQ- Adjust to select the desired frequency response. The center position provides a flat response. 9. E Bass- Press to intensify lower tones. The E Bass indicator lights. 10. PHONES Jack- Connect a pair of optional headphones with a 1/8-inch plug to listen privately. Speakers are automatically disconnected. Playing Cassette Tapes (Tape A and Tape B) Note: You can control the power, volume, and E Bass using the remote control or the controls on the system. Mute only works with the remote control. 1. Power- Press. The Dial Pointer indicator lights. 2. Function- Set to TAPE. 3. Stop/Eject- Press. Insert a pre-recorded cassette into the slots on the tape door with the side to be played facing you and the exposed tape facing down. Gently close the door. 4. Play- Press to start playing the tape. 5. Adjust the Volume, Balance, EQ, and E Bass controls as desired. See "Operating the Radio.") 6. F. Fwd/Rewind-Press to fast-forward or rewind the tape. Always press Stop/Eject before pressing other keys. 7. Pause- Press to pause the tape. Press again to resume. Note: Pause does not operate in the f-fwd or rewind modes. 8. Stop/Eject- Press to stop the tape. Press again to remove cassette. Note: When the cassette has played through one side it automatically stops. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 to play the other side of the cassette. 9. PHONES Jack- Connect a pair of optional headphones with a 1/8-inch plug to listen privately. Speakers are automatically disconnected. Continuous Play Operation (Tape B to Tape A) The Continuous Play feature automatically plays one side of Tape A after playing through one side of Tape B. Note: You can control the power, volume, and E Bass using the remote controls on the system. Mute only works with the remote control. 1. Power- Press. The Dial Pointer indicator lights. 2. Function- Set to TAPE. 3. Stop/Eject- Press. Insert prerecorded cassettes into the slots on (Tape A & B) the tape doors with the sides to be played facing you and the exposed tape facing down. Gently close the tape doors. 4. Play (Tape B)- Press to start play. 5. Pause (Tape A)-Press. 6. Play (Tape A)-Press. Note: Tape A does not start until Tape B has played through one side. 7. Adjust the Volume, Balance, EQ, and E Bass control as desired. (See "Operating the Radio.") 8. Stop/Eject- Press to stop the tapes. Press again to remove the (Tape A & B) cassettes. Note: When each cassette has played through one side, it automatically stops. Repeat Steps 3-6 play the other side of the cassette. 9. PHONES Jack- Connect a pair of optional headphones with a 1/8-inch plug to listen privately. Speakers are automatically disconnected. Playing Optional Program Sources Note: You can control the power, volume, and E Bass using the remote control or the controls on the system. Mute only works with the remote control. 1. Install an optional CD player, record player or other program source. 2. Power- Press. The Dial Pointer indicator lights. 3. Function- Set to PH/CD/AUX. 4. Operate the optional program source according to its owner's manual. 5. Volume- Adjust as desired. Note: If your optional program source has its own output volume control, you can match the volume level of the optional program source to the volume level of the system. To do this, set Function to TUNER and adjust the stereo's volume to a comfortable level. Now, set Function to PH/CD/AUX and adjust the optional program source's volume control to the same level. All audio sources selected by the Function switch are now equal in volume level. 6. Adjust the Balance, EQ, and E Bass controls as desired. (See "Operating the Radio.") 7. PHONES Jack- Connect a pair of optional headphones with a 1/8-inch plug to listen privately. Speakers are automatically disconnected. Recording Cassette Tapes (Tape A) Notes: You can control the power, volume, and E Bass using the remote control or the controls on the system. Mute only works with the remote control. For the best results when recording, we recommend you use only Normal Bias cassette tapes. When recording new material on a previously recorded tape, the old recording is automatically erased as the new material is recorded. 1. Power- Press. The Dial Pointer indicator lights. 2. Function- Set to TUNER or PH/CD/AUX depending on the program source you wish to record. Notes: To record from TAPE see "Tape Dubbing (Tape B to Tape A)." We do not recommend recording audio cassettes from a TV monitor, as possible interference from the TV can result in poor or noisy recordings. 3. HI-Speed- Set to OFF Dubbing 4. Operate the tuner, an optional CD player, record player, or other auxiliary program source as application. See "Tape Dubbing (Tape B to Tape A)" to record one tape onto another. 5. Stop/Eject- Press. Insert a blank cassette with the tabs in place (Tape A) into the slots in the tape door with the side to be recorded facing you and the exposed tape facing down. Gently close the tape door. 6. Pause- Press. 7. Record- Press. Play automatically goes down when you press Record, and the Record indicator lights. Notes: You can now record. The Automatic Level Control (ALC) circuit assures the correct recording level. No further adjustments are required. The Volume, Balance, EQ, Mode, and E Bass controls have no effect on the recorded sound. Adjusting these controls only affects the sound heard through the speakers or headphones. 8. Pause- Press to its up position. The tape starts to run and you begin recording from the tuner or other program source. Press to pause the tape during recording so you don't record unwanted passages. 9. Stop/Eject- Press to stop recording. Note: When the tape has recorded through one side, it automatically stops. Repeat Steps 5 through 9 to record onto the other side. Note: To prevent accidental erasure of a prerecorded tape, refer to the illustration below. Break the plastic tabs on the cassette after you make a recording. Each side has its own tab. If you change your mind later, cover the desired hole with tape. You can then record on the cassette again. Tape Dubbing (Tape B to Tape A) Notes: You can control power, volume, and E Bass using the remote control or the controls on the system. Mute only works the remote control. For the best results when recording, we recommend you use only Normal Bias cassette tapes. When recording new material on a previously recorded tape, the old recording is automatically erased as the new material is recorded. 1. Power- Press. The Dial Pointer indicator lights. 2. Function- Set to TAPE to monitor the recording when dubbing at normal speed. Set to TUNER or PH/CD/AUX to listen to another program source while dubbing at high speed. 3. Hi-Speed Dubbing- Set to OFF to monitor recording when dubbing at normal speed. Set to ON for high speed dubbing. Note: If you monitor the tape during high-speed dubbing, the audio is distorted because the tape is running at high speed. 4. Stop/Eject (Tape A)- Press. Insert a blank cassette with the tabs in place into the slots on the tape door with the side to be recorded facing you and the exposed tape facing down. Gently close the tape door. 5. Pause (Tape A)- Press. 6. Record- Press. Play automatically goes down when you press Record and the Record indicator lights. The HI-Speed indicator also light if HI-Speed Dubbing is ON. 7. Stop/Eject (Tape B)- Press. Insert a prerecorded cassette into the slots on the tape door with the side to be played facing you and the exposed tape facing down. Gently close the tape door. 8. Play (Tape B)- Press to Synchro-Start recording. Both tapes begin to run at the same time. Note: The Volume, Balance, EQ, Mode, and E Bass controls have no effect on the recorded headphones. If high-speed dubbing, Tape B resumes to normal speed when Tape A stops. 9. Pause (Tape A)- Press to pause the tape during recording so you don't record unwanted passages. Release to continue recording. 10. Stop/Eject (Tape A)-Press to stop recording. Press again to remove the cassette. Note: Tape A automatically stops when it has recorded through one side. You can press Tape B STOP/EJECT to stop Tape B so recording can continue from the spot where Tape A stopped. Repeat Steps 4-8 to record the other side. 11. Stop/Eject (Tape B)-Press to stop playing. Press again to remove the cassette. Note: To prevent accidental erasure of a prerecorded tape, break the plastic tabs on the cassette after you make a recording. Each side has its own tab. If you change your mind later, cover the desired hole with tape. You can then record on the cassette again. (LB/all-02/22/95)
