VSC-2002 (140-1158) Operation Faxback Doc. # 9775

PLAYING A CASSETTE TAPE

You can listen to tapes using the built-in speaker or using the supplied
earphone (see "Connecting the Earphone").

1. Take up any slack in the cassette tape by turning the hub with a
pencil. If you do not remove excess slack, the tape might become
tangled in the play mechanism. Avoid touching the tape.

2. Pull open the cassette compartment door.

3. Insert a cassette tape into the cassette guides so the open edge faces
up and the side you want to play faces the compartment's window.

4. Close the cassette compartment door.

5. Set VOX SENS/VOLUME to its minimum position.

6. Set VSC to IN or OUT as desired (see "Using the Variable Speed
    Control").

7. Press PLAY.

8. Adjust VOX SENS/VOLUME to a comfortable listening level.

9. If you set VSC to IN, set SPEED CONTROL for the playback speed you
want to use. Then set PITCH CONTROL to wherever the sound is best
    at the selected speed.

10. Press STOP to stop the tape.

Notes: The cassette recorder automatically stops the tape when it reaches
the end of the current side.

To stop playing or recording momentarily, slide PAUSE to IN.
Slide PAUSE to OUT to continue playing or recording.

To advance or rewind the tape when it is stopped, press FAST-F/CUE
or REWIND/REVIEW. The button locks down, and the tape continues
        moving until you press STOP.

If you press FAST-F/CUE or REWIND/REVIEW while the tape plays, you
hear the tape playing at high speed. This can help you locate a
a specific portion of the tape.

USING THE VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL

Set VSC to OUT to listen at normal speed.

Set VSC to IN if you want to set the playback speed. With VSC set to IN,
you can set SPEED CONTROL to play back a cassette tape at 0.75 to 2 times
the normal speed. If the sound is unintelligible, adjust PITCH CONTROL.

Note: Although you can set VSC to IN and adjust SPEED CONTROL and PITCH
CONTROL to play a tape at normal speed, the cassette recorder uses
more power when set this way.

USING THE TAPE COUNTER

The tape counter advances or counts backward according to tape movement.
This can help you locate a particular segment on the tape. Before you
play or record on a tape, press the reset button to set the counter to
000.

RECORDING

VOICE-ACTUATION RECORDING

Voice-actuation means that the cassette recorder starts and stops
depending on the sound level.

1. Load a blank cassette tape or one you want to record over.

2. Set VOX to IN.

3. Set VOX SENS/VOLUME to the best position for starting the recorder
    in your current recording environment.

Note: You are setting the voice-actuation sensitivity, not the
           volume.

At MAX (10), a soft sound can turn on the recorder. At MIN
(0), a louder sound is required.

4. Press RECORD. Recording begins when the microphone picks up a
sufficiently loud sound (based on the VOX SENS/VOLUME setting).
Recording stops seconds after the sound stops.

Note: The recording level is set automatically. Adjusting VOX SENS/
VOLUME does not change the recording level.

5. To stop recording while the sound continues, press STOP.

MANUAL RECORDING

You can use your cassette recorder to manually control recordings.

1. Load a blank cassette or one you want to record over.

2. Set VOX to OUT.

3. Press RECORD.

4. Press STOP to stop recording.

RECORDING WITH AN EXTERNAL MICROPHONE

You can connect an external microphone (not supplied) with a 1/8-inch plug
to the recorder's MIC jack. This automatically disconnects the internal
microphone.

Note: Your local Radio Shack store sells a variety of microphones.

If your microphone has a remote control switch, insert the microphone's
remote control plug into the recorder's REMOTE jack. You can then operate
the recorder from the external microphone's switch.

Set VOX to IN to use voice-actuation. For manual operation, set the
switch to OUT.

RECORD/BATTERY INDICATOR

While you record, the RECORD/BATTERY indicator lights.

If the indictor dims during recording, the batteries are weak. However,
if the batteries completely run out, the indicator does not light at all.

ERASING A RECORDING

1. Insert the supplied dummy plug into the MIC jack.

2. Set VOX to OUT.

3. Press RECORD. The tape is erased as it moves past the record/playback
    head.

If you want to erase only a part of a cassette, use the tape counter to be
sure you erase only the intended part.
