SCP-54 (140-1094) Installation Faxback Doc. # 9807 USING BATTERIES The cassette player is powered by two AA batteries (not supplied). For best results, We recommend alkaline batteries (such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552) or rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (such as Cat. No. 23-125). Installing/Replacing the Batteries When the volume weakens or the sound distorts, replace the batteries following these steps. 1. Pull open the cassette compartment door. The battery compartment is located at the bottom of the cassette compartment. 2. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow and lift off the cover. 3. If necessary, remove and discard the old battery. Warnings: Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. Never leave dead, or old or weak batteries in the cassette player. They can leak chemicals and corrode or damage electronic circuits. 4. Place two AA batteries in the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the compartment. Cautions: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Never mix fresh and old batteries, or alkaline and nickel-cadmium batteries. If you do not plan to use the cassette player for a month or more, remove and store the batteries. Connected, aging batteries might leak chemicals and corrode or damage electronic circuits. 5. Replace the battery compartment's cover. Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries Nickel-Cadmium batteries come fully discharged. You can charge the batteries using an optional external battery charger (such as Cat. No. 23-239). Warning: Do not try to charge non-rechargeable batteries. Doing so causes the batteries to get very hot and they could explode. Rechargeable battery Tips Fully discharge the batteries occasionally by playing the cassette player until it no longer plays. Then fully recharge the batteries. This helps maintain the batteries' full charging capacity. Avoid charging the batteries in a hot environment (more than 113 degrees F). Doing so can permanently reduce the batteries' charging capacity. This product is capable of using nickel-cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries' useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some operations that might be available are: municipal curb-side collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back program. CONNECTIONS You can listen to your SCP-54 cassette player by connecting stereo headphones or amplified speakers. Your local Radio Shack store carries a variety of headphones, amplified speakers, and audio patch cables. CONNECTING HEADPHONES For private listening, plug a pair of stereo headphones with a 1/8-inch plug (such as Cat. No. 33-1022, not supplied) into the cassette player's PHONES jack. Listening Safely Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended, high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Follow these guidelines to protect your hearing, especially when you use headphones. Always start by setting the volume to the lowest level possible before you begin listening. Put the earphone or headsets on, then gradually increase the volume as necessary. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over a period of time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear earphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some earphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. CONNECTING AMPLIFIED SPEAKERS To listen to your cassette player through speakers, plug a pair of amplified speakers (such as Cat. No. 40-1259, not supplied) into the cassette player's PHONES jack using the amplified speakers' built-in Y-cable. (br/all-02/27/95)
