SCP-53 (140-1093) Installation Faxback Doc. # 9814 POWER SOURCES You can power the SCP-53 from any of three power sources: internal battery power standard AC power (using an AC adapter) vehicle battery power (using a DC adapter) INTERNAL BATTERY POWER You can power the SCP-53 from two AA batteries. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Press down and slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow and lift it up. 2. Install the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked next to the compartment. 3. Replace the cover. Note: If you do not plan to use the SCP-53 for a week or more, or if you use AC or DC power, remove the batteries. This protects the cassette player from possible battery leakage. AC POWER You can power the SCP-53 from standard AC power. This requires an AC adapter, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 273-1654. Caution: You must use a Class II, AC adapter that supplied 3 volts and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the SCP-53's DC 3V jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the SCP-53 or the adapter. Follow these steps to power the SCP-53 from AC power. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Insert the adapter's black-tipped barrel plug into the adapter's cord so it reads TIP-NEG. 3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the SCP-53's DC 3V jack. 4. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. Note: Connecting a power automatically disconnects the internal batteries. VEHICLE BATTERY (DC) POWER You can power the SCP-53 from your vehicle's battery. This requires a DC adapter, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 270-1560. Cautions: The vehicle must have a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. You must use a DC adapter that supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the SCP-53's DC 3V jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the SCP-53 or the adapter. Be sure the adapter is connected to the cigarette-lighter socket only when it is also connected to the SCP-53. Otherwise, the unconnected plug might touch some metal in the vehicle and damage the adapter and/or the SCP-53. Follow these steps to power the SCP-53 from DC power. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Insert the adapter's black-tipped, barrel plug into the adapter's cord so it reads TIP-NEG. 3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the SCP-53's DC 3V jack. 4. Plug the adapter's larger plug into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. Note: Connecting a power adapter automatically disconnects the internal batteries. CONNECTING HEADPHONES/SPEAKERS Connect stereo headphones or amplified speakers with a 1/8-inch stereo plug to the PHONES jack. Your local Radio Shack store sells a wide variety of stereo headphones and amplified speakers. Warning: To prevent possible hearing loss, turn VOL. to its lowest setting before you put on headphones or connect speakers. After you connect headphones or speakers, adjust the volume. LISTENING SAFELY To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones: Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. TRAFFIC SAFETY Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can cause a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear outside sounds when you listen at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. (br-1/27/95)
