System 727 (130-1274) Installation Faxback Doc. # 9821 Cautions: Do not connect the system to AC power until you complete all other connections. Be sure to follow all the installation instructions described in the enclosed "Safety Instructions." SPEAKER LOCATION For the best stereo effect, place the supplied speakers so the distance between them is the same as the distance between the listening area and a point halfway between the speakers. If the distance between the speakers is greater, you can improve the stereo effect by angling the speakers in toward you. To increase the bass effect, place the speakers in corners, against the wall, or directly on the floor. To decrease the bass effect, move the speakers slightly away from the corners, increase the distance between them, or raise them 6 to 8 inches off the floor. You can purchase speaker stands at your local Radio Shack store. CONNECTING THE SPEAKERS For maximum bass response and the best overall performance, connect the speakers so their polarities match (+ to +, and - to -). Caution: Do not let the bare speaker wires touch each other. This might damage the system or speakers. If the bare speaker wires accidentally touch each other, the system might lock up. To clear the lock up, separate the wires, unplug the power cord, then plug it back in. Then reset the system. See "Resetting the System." Note: If you want to connect speakers other than the supplied ones, use speakers with an impedance of 6 ohms. 1. Push the speaker terminal tabs next to SPEAKERS R (+) and R (-) to the left. 2. Insert the stripped end of the right speaker's striped wire into the hole next to SPEAKERS R (+), then push the tab to the right to lock it. 3. Insert the stripped end of the right speaker's solid wire into the hole next to SPEAKERS R (-), then push the tab to the right to lock it. 4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to connect the left speaker to SPEAKERS L (+) and L (-). CONNECTING THE ANTENNAS You can use the supplied indoor AM loop antenna and FM antenna for adequate reception in most areas. For the best reception, connect outdoor antennas. Your local Radio Shack store sells a complete line of outdoor AM and FM antennas and accessories. Warning: Use extreme caution when you install or remove an outdoor AM or FM antenna. If the antenna starts to fall, let it go! It could contact overhead power lines. If the antenna touches the power line, contact with the antenna, mast, cable, or guy wires can cause electrocution and death. Call the power company to remove the antenna. DO NOT attempt to do so yourself. Note: If you use 75-ohm coaxial cable with the outdoor antenna, connect the cable's outer conductor to the ground side of the FM 75 ohm terminal, then connect the cable's inner conductor to the remaining FM 75 ohm terminal. AM Loop Antenna Follow these steps to connect the supplied AM loop antenna. 1. Press and hold down both AM LOOP terminal tabs on the back of the system, insert the stripped ends of the AM loop antennas wires into the holes, then release the terminal tabs. 2. Position the AM loop antenna for the best reception. Note: You can use screws (not supplied) to attach the AM loop antenna to the wall. FM Antenna Follow these steps to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna. 1. Press and hold down both FM 75 ohm terminal tabs on the back of the system. 2. Insert the stripped ends of the indoor FM antenna's wires into the holes, then release the terminal tabs. 3. Position the FM antenna for the best reception. CONNECTING POWER After you have connected the speakers and antennas, plug the system's AC power cord into a standard AC outlet. Caution: To prevent electric shock, the plug's blades are polarized and fit only one way. If the plug does not fit easily, turn it over and try again. Do not force the plug into the AC outlet. Note: The System 727 holds stored stations and timer programs in memory for up to 24 hours if you unplug the AC power cord or if a power failure occurs. However, you must reset the system's clock. See "Setting the Clock." USING THE BUTTONS ON THE FRONT OF THE SYSTEM Many of the system's buttons have two different functions. The functions of these buttons depend on which part of the system you are using. For example, one of the system's buttons is labeled with both || PAUSE (on the button's face) and SET above the button). If you press the button while listening to a CD the CD pauses. If you press the same button while setting the system's clock, the clock display becomes brighter and the hour flashes. To use a function printed on or above a button, just press the button. RESETTING THE SYSTEM If the System 727's display locks up or does not work properly after you connect power, you might have to reset the system. Caution: This procedure clears all the information you have programmed into the system. Use this procedure only when you are sure the System 727 is not working properly. 1. Press POWER/STANDBY on the system to turn off the power, then unplug the AC power cord and plug it back in. 2. While pressing and holding down CLEAR on the system, press and release POWER/STANDBY. 3. Press POWER/STANDBY again to turn on the power. INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL'S BATTERIES The System 727's remote control requires two AA batteries (not supplied) for operation.
