System 727 (130-1274) Operation Faxback Doc. # 9822 Warning: To protect your hearing, set VOLUME MIN/MAX to MIN before you turn on the system. Caution: Do not set VOLUME MIN/MAX too high while playing soft or quiet portions of a music program. Due to the System 727's wide dynamic range, its speakers might be damaged if the music program includes a sudden loud passage. Follow these steps to operate your system 1. Press POWER/STANDBY to turn on the system. Note: For the first 4 seconds after you turn on the system you can use only the source selection buttons (TAPE, TUNER/AM-FM, VIDEO/AUX, and CD) and T-BASS. 2. Press one of the source selection buttons (TAPE, TUNER/AM-FM, VIDEO/AUX, or CD) to choose the desired audio source. Note: If you press TUNER/AM-FM, the system's tuner turns on automatically. 3. Start the selected audio source, if necessary. 4. Adjust VOLUME MIN/MAX to a comfortable listening level. Notes: To adjust the volume with the remote control, press /\ to increase or \/ to decrease it. When you adjust the volume using the remote control, VOLUME MIN/MAX on the tuner turns. 5. Press ROCK, POP or JAZZ to select an equalizer mode. See "Using the Electronic Graphic Equalizer." 6. Press T-BASS to emphasize bass sounds. To de-emphasize bass sounds, press, T-BASS again. 7. Press POWER/STANDBY to turn off the system. USING THE REMOTE CONTROL To use the remote control, point it directly at the infrared sensor on the left side of the display and firmly press the desired button. Many of the remote control's buttons have two different functions. To use the function printed on the button, just press the button. To use the function printed above the button, press and hold down SHIFT, then press the button. Repeatedly press FUNCTION to select the desired audio source(TAPE, TUNER/AM-FM, VIDEO/AUX, or CD). USING THE ELECTRONIC GRAPHIC EQUALIZER Use the electronic graphic equalizer to select any of the preset sound character curves. Each setting distinctly changes the music's character or tone. ROCK : Powerful sound emphasizing treble and bass POP : More presence of vocals and midrange JAZZ : Sound enriched with heavy bass and fine treble ROCK, POP or JAZZ scrolls once across the display, and a red box surrounds the selected mode on the display. To cancel the equalizer mode you selected, press its button again. EQoFF appears. USING HEADPHONES For private listening, you can use a pair of headphones (not supplied) with a 1/4-inch plug, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 33-1140. Insert the headphones' 1/4-inch plug into the PHONES jack on the front of the System 727. Note: Connecting headphones automatically disconnects the external speakers. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. USING THE TIMER ALARM You can set the System 727 to automatically turn itself on, play, then turn itself off at selected times. You can set the system to play any music source, and you can use the system while the timer is set. Setting the Timer Alarm Follow these steps to set the timer alarm. 1. Press POWER/STANDBY to turn on the system. 2. While pressing and holding down SHIFT on the remote control, press TIMER. TIMER, CLOCK FACE, and a start time appear for 4 seconds. 3. To change the start time, press SET within 4 seconds. The displayed hour flashes. Note: If TIMER and the start time disappear before you press SET, start again from Step 2. 4. Repeatedly press <<- DOWN or UP ->> until the display shows the correct hour. If you press and hold down <<- DOWN or UP ->>, the hour advances quickly. 5. Press SET. The minute flashes. 6. Repeatedly press <<- DOWN or UP ->> until the display shows the correct minute. If you press and hold down <<- DOWN or UP ->>, the minute advances quickly. 7. Press SET. The set start time stops flashing and displays for about 4 seconds. 8. Repeatedly press <<- DOWN or UP ->> within 4 seconds to set the amount of time the system will stay on before turning itself off (from 10 to 240 minutes). If you press and hold down <<- DOWN or UP ->>, the time advances quickly. The displayed time changes in 10-minute increments. Note: If the set start time disappears before you press <<- DOWN or UP ->>, press and hold down SHIFT, then press TIMER again. Then press SET three times and repeat Step 8. 9. Press one of the source selection buttons (TAPE, TUNER/AM-FM, VIDEO/AUX, or CD) to choose the desired audio source. Note: If you press TUNER/AM-FM, the system's tuner turns on automatically. 10. Start the selected audio source, if necessary. 11. Adjust VOLUME MIN/MAX to a comfortable listening level. 12. Press POWER/STANDBY to turn off the system. A clock face and the current time appear. The System 727 turns itself on at the start time, and stays on for the amount of time you selected. The display stays dim while the timer is set. Notes: You cannot set the timer alarm while you are recording. You cannot display the time that the system will stay on before turning itself off, but you can change it by repeating Steps 1-8. Displaying the Start Time. To display the start time, press TIMER while pressing and holding down SHIFT. TIMER and the start time appear for 4 seconds. Turning the Timer Alarm Off 1. If you selected TAPE 1 as the audio source, press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 1. 2. Press POWER/STANDBY to turn on the system. 3. Repeatedly press TIMER while pressing and holding down SHIFT until the clock face disappears from the display, or leave POWER/STANDBY on until the set start time has passed. USING THE SLEEP TIMER You can set the System 727 to play up to 240 minutes then automatically turn off. Setting the Sleep Timer Follow these steps to set the sleep timer. 1. Press POWER/STANDBY to turn on the system. 2. Press one of the source selection buttons (TAPE, TUNER/AM-FM, the system's tuner turns on automatically. 3. Start the selected audio source, if necessary. 4. While pressing and holding down SHIFT, press SLEEP. SLEEP and the number of minutes appear (60 is the default) for about 4 seconds, the sleep timer turns on, and the display dims. 5. To change the number of minutes, repeatedly press <<- DOWN or UP ->> within 4 seconds to set the amount of time you want. If you press and hold DOWN <<- or UP ->>, the time advances quickly. The displayed sleep time changes in 10-minute increments. Note: If SLEEP and the number of minutes disappear before you press <<- DOWN or UP ->>, press and hold down SHIFT, then press SLEEP again. Then repeat Step 5. After about 4 seconds, the display dims. The System 727 turns itself off after the amount of time you selected. Displaying the Remaining Sleep Time If you set the sleep timer, you can display the time remaining before the System 727 automatically turns itself off. 1. While pressing and holding down SHIFT, press SLEEP. SLEEP and the remaining number of minutes appear for about 4 seconds, and the display dims. 2. To change the number of minutes remaining, repeatedly press <<- DOWN or UP ->> within 4 seconds to set the amount of time you want. The displayed sleep time changes in 10-minute increments. Turning the Sleep Timer Off To turn the sleep timer off, either press POWER/STANDBY, or press SLEEP twice while pressing and holding down SHIFT. USING THE TUNER You can tune to AM or FM radio stations using manual, seek, or memory tuning. Notes: If FM stereo reception is noisy, press and hold down SHIFT, then press FM MODE/AM-FM on the remote control. AUTO disappears from the display. The sound is no longer in stereo, but the reception improves. To return to stereo, press and hold down SHIFT, then press FM MODE AM-FM again. AUTO appears on the display. If you tune to a stereo station, (((0))) appears on the display. When you turn on the System 727 and press TUNER/AM-FM, the tuner tunes to the station that was playing when the system was turned off. MANUAL TUNING 1. If a preset number is displayed, press TUNING/PRESET on the system until it disappears. 2. On the system, press TUNER/AM-FM to select the desired band (AM or FM). AM or FM appears on the display. 3. Repeatedly press <<- DOWN or UP ->> to tune up or down the selected band. SEEK TUNING Seek tuning tunes to the next higher or lower station with a strong signal. 1. If a preset number is displayed, press TUNING/PRESET on the system until it disappears. 2. Press TUNER/AM-FM to select the desired band (AM or FM). AM or FM appears on the display. 3. Press and hold down <<- DOWN or UP ->> for about 1 second. (br/all-04/11/95)
