System 727 (130-1274) Recording Faxback Doc. # 9824 You can use the System 727 to record onto a cassette tape from the following sources: Another cassette tape CD player Tuner Auxiliary audio/video source Combination of audio source and your voice (using the karaoke feature) DUBBING (COPYING) CASSETTE TAPES You can use the cassette deck's synchro-start feature to easily copy a tape by playing it in TAPE 2 and recording it on to another tape in TAPE 1. You can select between normal and high-speed dubbing, and you can monitor the tape as you dub it. Notes: Be sure the erase-protection tab for the cassette you want to record on is in place. The recording level is preset, Adjusting T-BASS, the frequency equalizer, or VOLUME MIN/MAX does not affect the recording level. 1. Press TAPE. TAPE appears on the display. 2. Load the cassette you want to copy into TAPE 2 with the cassette's full reel to the left and the side you want to play facing you. 3. Load a blank cassette, or one you want to record over, into TAPE 1. Position the cassette so the side you want to record onto faces you with its full reel to the left. 4. Set the dubbing speed: To record in half the normal recording time, press HI-SPEED DUBBING until H-DUB appears. Note: If you select high-speed dubbing, PLAY, FAST-F, and REWIND do not operate. To record at normal speed for better quality sound, press HI-SPEED DUBBING until TAPE appears. 5. On TAPE 1, press PAUSE, then press RECORD. REC appears on the display, and PLAY on TAPE 1 automatically locks down. Caution: Do not force down RECORD. This can damage the record mechanism. 6. Press PLAY on TAPE 2. PAUSE on TAPE 1 releases and the system copies the tape in TAPE 2 onto the tape in TAPE 1. Notes: To monitor the tape while it is copying, adjust VOLUME MIN/MAX to a comfortable listening level. If you monitor the tape while high-speed dubbing, the sound is distorted. 7. To stop copying, press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 1 and TAPE 2. When either tape reaches the end, that deck automatically turns off. If the tape in the other deck has not run out of tape, that tape continues to record or play. COPYING A CD TO A CASSETTE TAPE Notes: Before you use a cassette tape to make a copy, make sure the erase- protection tabs for the cassette you want to record on are in place. While you copy a CD to a cassette tape, some of the CD player's controls on the remote control and front panel will not work. To restore all of the CD player's controls, you must press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 1 after you finish copying. Basic Copying Follow these steps to copy a CD onto a cassette tape. 1. Load a blank cassette tape, or one you want to record over, into TAPE 1 with its open edge facing down, the desired side facing out, and its full reel to the left. 2. Gently close the compartment door. 3. Press PLAY on TAPE 1, wait a few seconds for the tape to play past the tape leader, then press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 1. 4. Press CD. CD appears on the display. 5. Load the CD you want to record. See "Loading and Playing CDs." 6. Press RECORD on TAPE 1. The CD automatically starts playing from Track 1, and the cassette records until it reaches the end of the tape. Caution: Do not force down RECORD. This can damage the record mechanism. 7. To completely stop recording before it automatically stops, press STOP, then press STOP/EJECT. Press STOP/EJECT again to open the cassette compartment and remove the cassette tape. Programmed Copying The system lets you program CD playback so you can record specific tracks in the order you want. 1. Load a blank cassette tape, or one you want to record over, into TAPE 1 with its open edge facing down and its full reel to the left. 2. Gently close the compartment door. 3. Press PLAY on TAPE 1, wait a few seconds for the blank tape to play past the tape leader, then press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 1. 4. Press CD. CD appears on the display. 5. Load the CD you want to record. 6. Press STOP, then follow Steps 2-5 in "Programming and Playing a Sequence of Tracks" (Faxback Doc. # 9822) to program the CD playback. 7. Press RECORD on TAPE 1. The CD automatically starts playing from the first programmed track, and the cassette records until it reaches the end of the tape. Caution: Do not force down RECORD. This can damage the record mechanism. 8. To completely stop recording before it automatically stops, press STOP, then press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 1. Press STOP/EJECT again to open the cassette compartment and remove the cassette tape. Edit Recording The system's CD changer can automatically select the tracks on a CD that will fit on each side of a cassette tape, then record the tracks on the cassette tape. Although the system can display only 20 tracks, you can record CDs containing up to 30 tracks. 1. Press CD. CD appears on the display, and the system highlights the selected CD's number on the display. 2. If the CD you want to copy is not selected, press DISC NUMBER 1, 2, or 3 to select it, then press STOP. 3. Load a blank cassette tape, or one you want to record over, into TAPE 1 with its open edge facing down, the desired side facing out, and its full reel to the left. 4. Gently close the compartment door. 5. Press PLAY on TAPE 1, wait a few seconds for the blank tape to play past the tape leader, then press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 1. 6. While pressing and holding down SHIFT, press EDIT. C-00 appears, and a red box surrounds AI EDIT on the display. 7. Enter the cassette tape's length (up to 99 minutes). For example, if you are using a 60-minute cassette tape, press 6 and 0. After a few seconds, the system displays the tracks on the CD that will fit on one side of the cassette tape. The system also displays the remaining time for that side of the cassette tape. Notes: If there is enough remaining blank tape, you can add tracks from other CDs in the CD changer to the recording. Press DISC NUMBER 1, 2, or 3 to select the CD, then select the additional tracks to record. If the playing time of a selected track is longer than the remaining blank tape, you cannot add the track. 8. Press RECORD on TAPE 1. Tape 1 starts recording, and the CD changer starts playing. When all selected CD tracks finish playing, the CD changer pauses. 9. While the CD changer is paused, press and hold down SHIFT, then press DISPLAY. After a few seconds, the system displays the remaining tracks on the CD that will fit on the other side of the cassette tape. The system also displays the remaining time on the side of the cassette tape. 10. Press STOP/EJECT, unload the cassette tape, then turn it over and reload it. 11. Press RECORD on TAPE 1. Tape 1 starts recording, and the CD changer starts playing. When all selected CD tracks finish playing, the CD changer pauses. 12. When you finish recording, press STOP or ^ OPEN/CLOSE. Note: Since cassette tapes usually have more tape than the time indicated on their labels, the total playing time for the edited tracks might be a little longer than the specified tape recording time. If this occurs, the excess time (without a minus sign) appears instead of the remaining time (with a minus sign) after editing. RECORDING FROM THE TUNER, TURNTABLE, OR VIDEO EQUIPMENT Follow these steps to record form the tuner or from an external audio source connected to the System 727, such as a turntable, a VCR, or other audio/video equipment. 1. Load a blank cassette tape, or one you want to record over, into TAPE 1 with its open edge facing down, the desired side facing out, and its full reel to the left. 2. Gently close the compartment door. 3. Press PLAY on TAPE 1, wait a few seconds for the tape to play past the tape leader, then press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 1. 4. Press the source selection button (TUNER/AM-FM or VIDEO/AUX) for the desired audio source. 5. Press RECORD on TAPE 1, start the selected audio source. The cassette records until it reaches the end of the side, then it automatically stops. Caution: Do not force down RECORD. This can damage the record mechanism. 6. Press STOP/EJECT to completely stop recording before it automatically stops. Press STOP/EJECT again to open the cassette compartment and remove the cassette tape. TIMER RECORDING You can set the System 727 to automatically turn itself on, record from any music source onto a tape in TAPE 1, then turn itself off at the times you set. Setting the Record Timer 1. Press POWER/STANDBY to turn on the system. 2. Repeat Steps 2-11 in "Using the Timer Alarm," and select the source you want to record from in Step 9. 3. Load a blank cassette tape, or one you want to record over, into TAPE 1 with its open edge facing down, the side you want to record on facing out, and the full reel to the left. 4. Gently close the compartment door. 5. Press PLAY on TAPE 1, wait a few seconds for the tape to play past the tape leader, then press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 1. 6. Press RECORD on TAPE 1. Press POWER/STANDBY to turn off the system. The clock symbol and the current time appear. The System 727 turns itself on and records onto the cassette in TAPE 1 at the start time, and stays on for the selected amount of time. The display stays dim while the timer is set. Caution: If the cassette's length is longer than the timer recording period, RECORD stays locked down when the timer turns off. To prevent accidental tape tangling, press STOP/EJECT as soon as possible after the timer turns off. Displaying the Start Time To display the record start time, press TIMER while pressing and holding down SHIFT. TIMER and the start time appear for 4 seconds. Turning the Record Timer Off To turn the record timer off, either press TIMER while pressing and holding down SHIFT until the clock symbol disappears from the display, or leave POWER/STANDBY on. Note: If the clock symbol and the current time are displayed, follow these steps to turn the record timer off. 1. Press STOP/EJECT on TAPE 1. 2. Press POWER/STANDBY to turn on the system. 3. Press TIMER while pressing and holding down SHIFT. USING THE KARAOKE FEATURE You can use the System 727's karaoke feature to sing along with your favorite cassette recordings or songs played over the radio (microphone mixing), mute existing vocals in many recordings or songs played over the radio (voice canceling), and mute existing vocals in special pre-recorded multi-audio karaoke CDs or cassette tapes (multiplex). You can use the system to record the accompaniment with your voice on a cassette tape. Notes: To use the System 727's karaoke feature with your own voice, you need an external microphone (not supplied) such as Radio Shack Cat No. 33-986 and a 1/4-inch plug adapter (not supplied) such as Radio Shack Cat. 274-047. Insert the microphone's 1/4-inch stereo plug adapter, then plug the adapter into the system's 1/8-inch MIC jack. To help prevent feedback, we recommend you use a unidirectional microphone. Warning: To protect your hearing, set VOLUME MIN/MAX to MIN before you turn on the system. (br/all-02/27/95)
