Micro-17 (140-1178) Installation Faxback Doc. # 9841 SUPPLYING POWER You can power your Micro-17 from any of three power sources: internal batteries standard AC power (with an optional AC adapter) Using Internal Batteries You can use two AA batteries to power your Micro-17. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-557. You can also use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23-125) with a battery charger (Cat. No. 23-234). Caution: Do not mix non-rechargeable and rechargeable batteries in the Micro-17. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and slide it in the direction of the arrow to remove it. 2. Install the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the battery compartment. Notes: Fresh alkaline batteries last for about 18 hours. If the volume sounds weak or if the Micro-17 does not work properly, replace the batteries. Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Do not mix old and new batteries. 3. Replace the cover. Cautions: Never leave dead or weak batteries in the Micro-17. If you do not plan to use the Micro-17 for a month or more, remove the batteries. Dispose of batteries properly; do not bury or burn them. Note: The Micro-17 is capable of using rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries' useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mailback programs. Using AC Power To power the Micro-17 from an AC outlet, you need an AC adapter such as Cat. No. 273-1654. Cautions: You must use an AC adapter that supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the Micro-17's DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the Micro-17 or the adapter. Always unplug the AC adapter from the AC outlet before you unplug its barrel plug from the Micro-17. Insert the AC adapter's barrel plug into the DC 3V jack on the side of the Micro-17, then plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet. Note: the internal batteries automatically disconnect when you connect an AC adapter. Using a Vehicle's Cigarette-Lighter Socket To power the Micro-17 from a vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket, you need a DC adapter such as Cat. No. 270-1560. Cautions: Your vehicle must have a 12-volt, negative-ground electrical system. Most vehicles have this type of system. If you are not sure about your vehicle, check with your vehicle's dealer. You must use a DC cigarette-lighter adapter that supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the Micro- 17's DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the Micro-17 or the adapter. Always unplug the adapter from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket before you unplug its barrel plug from the Micro-17. 1. Connect the adapter's orange barrel plug to the adapter's cord, matching TIP to negative (-). 2. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3 volts. 3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the Micro-17's DC 3V jack. 4. Plug the adapter into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. Notes: The internal batteries automatically disconnect when you connect a DC adapter. Unplug the adapter from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket when you turn off the ignition. This prevents vehicle battery drain if you leave the Micro-17 on when you turn off the ignition. CONNECTING THE EARPHONE To connect the supplied earphone for private listening, insert the earphone's 1/8-inch plug into the Micro-17's EAR jack. Note: When you connect the earphone, the Micro-17's internal speaker automatically disconnects. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use an earphone. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear an earphone while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some earphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. CONNECTING AN EXTERNAL MICROPHONE The Micro-17 has a built-in microphone, but you can connect an optional external microphone (such as Cat. No. 33-1067) if you want to move the microphone closer to the sound source, or for other special recording situations. Insert the microphone's 1/8-inch plug into the Micro-17's MIC jack. Note: When you connect an external microphone the Micro-17's built-in microphone automatically disconnects. (br/all-02/28/95)
