Micro-17 (140-1178) Operation Faxback Doc. # 9842 LOADING A MICROCASSETTE TAPE 1. Take up any slack in the microcassette tape by turning the cassette's hub with a pencil. If you do not remove excess slack, the tape might become tangled in the record/playback mechanism. 2. Press STOP/EJECT to open the cassette compartment door. 3. Load the cassette with its open edge facing up and its full reel to the right. 4. Gently close the compartment door. PLAYING A MICROCASSETTE TAPE Warning: To protect your hearing, turn VOLUME/VOX SENS fully counterclockwise before you begin playing a tape. 1. Load a microcassette tape. 2. Press Play. Notes: The microcassette plays until it reaches the end of the side, then it automatically stops. Although the Micro-17's auto stop feature stops the tape and turns the recorder off when the tape reaches the end, the tape-handling parts continue to touch the tape until you press STOP/EJECT. We recommend you press STOP/EJECT as soon as you finish recording or playing a tape to release it from the tape-handling parts. This reduces the possibility of the tape being inadvertently tangled or damaged. 3. Adjust VOLUME/VOX SENS to the desired volume level. 4. Set TAPE SPEED to the tape speed used when the tape was recorded (see "Setting the Tape Speed"). Note: If you do not know the tape's record speed, try both TAPE SPEED settings after you press PLAY to find the correct one. 5. Set FAST PLAY to IN to play back a tape about 30 percent faster than the current tape speed. Set FAST PLAY to OUT to resume the current tape speed. Notes: To temporarily stop playback, set PAUSE to IN. Set PAUSE to OUT to resume operation. To hear the tape at a faster speed, slide and hold <<- ->> toward CUE/FAST-F or REV/REW during playback. When you release <<-->>, the recorder resumes normal playback. 6. To completely stop playback before it automatically stops, press STOP/EJECT. Press STOP/EJECT again to open the microcassette compartment and remove the tape. Note: To rapidly advance or rewind the tape, slide <<-->> to CUE/FAST-F or REV/REW when the tape is stopped. <<-->> locks down, and the tape advances or rewinds until you press STOP/EJECT or slide <<-->> toward the center, or until the tape reaches the end. USING THE TAPE COUNTER You can use the tape counter to note the locations of specific sections of tape. At the beginning of a tape, press the reset button at the tape counter's right to set the counter to 000. As the tape plays or records, note the counter reading at the point(s) where you want to return. RECORDING Setting the Tape Speed Before you make a recording, set TAPE SPEED to either of the following positions: To get double the tape's playback time, set TAPE SPEED to 1.2. This will give you 120 minutes of total playback time on an MC-60 tape or 180 minutes on an MC-90 tape. For better sound quality, set TAPE SPEED to 2.4 (normal speed). Note: You can change TAPE SPEED any time while you record or play a tape. Voice-Actuation Recording Voice-actuation causes the Micro-17 to start and stop, depending on the sound level it detects. The built-in condenser microphone is extremely sensitive and picks up sounds from practically anywhere in a normal size room. You can monitor the sound level by connecting the supplied earphone to the EAR jack on top of the Micro-17. See "Connecting the Earphone." Use a lower VOLUME/VOX SENS setting in a high-noise environment, such as in a plane or automobile, so the recorder is less likely to start because of the background noise. Caution: Press down RECORD only when a microcassette tape is loaded, and do not force down RECORD. This can damage the recording mechanism. 1. Load a blank microcassette tape or one you want to record over into the tape compartment. 2. Set VOX to IN to set the recorder to automatically record when the recorder picks up sound. Recording stops a few seconds after the sound stops. 3. Press RECORD to begin recording. Both PLAY and RECORD lock down. Recording begins and the RECORD/BATT indicator lights only when the recorder picks up sound. Note: to temporarily stop recording, set PAUSE to IN. Set PAUSE to OUT to resume operation. 4. Adjust VOLUME/VOX SENS to set the sound level at which the recorder will start recording. At 10 (maximum), a soft sound can turn on the recorder. At 0 (minimum), a louder sound is required. Note: The recording level is set automatically. Adjusting VOLUME/VOX SENS does not change the recording level. 5. To completely stop recording before it automatically stops, press STOP/EJECT. Press STOP/EJECT again to open the microcassette compartment and remove the tape. Manual Recording Caution: Press down RECORD only when a microcassette tape is loaded, and do not force down RECORD. This can damage the recording mechanism. 1. Load a blank microcassette tape or one you want to record over into the tape compartment. 2. Set VOX and PAUSE to OUT to manually record. 3. Press RECORD to begin recording. Both PLAY and RECORD lock down. Recording begins and the RECORD/BATT indicator lights. Notes: The recording level is set automatically. Adjusting VOLUME/VOX SENS does not change the recording level. To temporarily stop recording, set PAUSE to IN. Set PAUSE to OUT to resume operation. 4. To completely stop recording before it automatically stops, press STOP/EJECT. Press STOP/EJECT again to open the microcassette compartment and remove the tape. RECORD/BATT INDICATOR The RECORD/BATT indicator lights during voice-actuation or manual recording. If the indicator does not light or becomes dim during recording, replace the batteries.
