SCP-52 (140-1092) Installation Faxback Doc. # 9849 POWER SOURCES INTERNAL BATTERY POWER You can power the cassette player from two AA batteries. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552. Notes: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Never mix fresh with old batteries. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow. 2. Place the batteries in the compartment as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked next to the compartment. 3. Replace the battery compartment cover. Notes: If the sound weakens, replace the batteries. Always dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. If you plan not to use the cassette player for a month or more or if you use AC or external DC power, remove the batteries. This protects the cassette player from possible battery leakage. USING AN AC ADAPTER You can power your cassette player from standard AC power using an optional AC adapter. We recommended Radio Shack Cat. No. 273-1654. If you use another adapter, be sure that it supplies 3 volts, delivers at least 200 milliamps and has a compatible plug with the tip set to negative. Note: Connecting a power adapter automatically disconnects the internal batteries. Follow these steps to use AC power using the recommended adapter. 1. Plug the adapter cord into the DC 3V jack on the back of the unit. 2. Plug the power module into a standard AC outlet. Caution: To prevent damage to your stereo, always unplug the AC adapter from the AC outlet before you unplug it from the stereo. USING A DC ADAPTER You can use your vehicle's battery to power the stereo if the vehicle has a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. This connection requires a DC adapter that supplies 3 volts, delivers at least 200 milliamps, and has a compatible barrel plug with the center tip set to negative, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 270-1560. Follow these steps to power the cassette player from DC power. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Insert the adapter's black-tipped barrel plug into the adapter's cord so it reads TIP NEG. 3. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the SCP-52's DC 3V jack. 4. Plug the adapter's larger plug into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. Caution: To prevent damage to your stereo and vehicle, always unplug the DC adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket before you unplug it from the stereo. CONNECTING HEADPHONES/SPEAKERS Connect stereo headphones or amplified speakers with a 1/8-inch stereo plug to the HEADPHONE jack. Radio Shack stores sell a wide variety of stereo headphones and amplified speakers. LISTENING SAFELY Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended, high volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Follow these guidelines to protect your hearing, especially when you use headphones. Before you begin listening, always start by setting the volume to the lowest level possible. Put the earphone or headsets on, then gradually increase the volume as necessary. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over a period of time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. TRAFFIC SAFETY Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can cause a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear outside sounds when you listen at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. (br/all-02/28/95)
