Two-Way Component Speaker (120-1723) Installation Faxback Doc. # 14189 System With Crossover Networks If you are unsure about following installation process, we recommend you have a professional install the speakers. CHOOSING A LOCATION Choosing a Location for the Crossover Networks Together, the crossover networks form the center of all connections. Select a location convenient for connecting it to your autosound system and the tweeter and woofer speakers. Be sure the wire connections do not hinder your activity in the car. Choosing a location for the Speakers For the best stereo performance, install speakers in a solid, firm surface that does not vibrate at high volume levels. We recommend you mount the tweeters in the door panels or on the outer corners of the car dash, and the back deck, if there is sufficient clearance. Once you select the location for the crossover network and the speakers, carefully inspect the area behind the mounting surface. Steel door panels and the back deck (behind the upholstery) might already have large cut-out areas for recessing the speaker. Notes: If you must cut-out the mounting area: There must be a clear unobstructed area of at least 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm) behind the mounting surface. The surface must be sturdy enough to support the speaker's weight. Cardboard or fiber panels are not good mounting surfaces. If you select door mounting locations, the window, window mechanism, or window handle must not come in contact with the speaker. Check this with the window open and closed. ROUTING SPEAKER WIRE Avoid routing speaker wire near moving parts or sharp edges. You can usually route it along the wiring channel beneath the vehicle's door facings by carefully removing the molding that holds the carpet in place. After routing the speaker wire, replace the molding. Note: If you select door mounting locations: When you route the wires from the crossover network to the speaker's mounting area, leave enough slack wire to allow opening the door freely without restraint. You might have to punch a small hole in the door edge (near the door hinges) to route the wires into the door. Tape any exposed wire to avoid pinching or cutting the excess wire when you close the door. BEFORE YOU MOUNT THE SPEAKER SYSTEM Before you mount your speaker system, we recommend that you connect it to your autosound system so you can test the speakers and wire connections. CONNECTING THE SPEAKER SYSTEM CONNECTING THE CROSSOVER NETWORKS 1. Connect your autosound system's left positive (+) output terminal to the left crossover network's positive (-) INPUT terminal. Note: Tightly secure the cables connected to the screw terminals on the crossover network. 2. Connect your autosound system's left negative (-) output terminal to the left crossover network's negative (-) INPUT terminal. 3. Repeat Step 1 and 2 to connect your autosound system's right output terminals to the right crossover network. CONNECTING THE TWEETER SPEAKERS 1. Connect the positive (+) wire (a black wire with a white line) on the left tweeter speaker to the left crossover network's TWEETER positive (+) output terminal. 2. Connect the negative (-) wire (a plain black wire) on the left tweeter speaker to the left crossover network's TWEETER negative (-) output terminal. 3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to connect the right tweeter speaker wires to the right crossover network. CONNECTING THE WOOFER SPEAKERS 1. Connect the left woofer's positive (+) terminal to the left crossover network's WOOFER positive (+) output terminal. 2. Connect the left woofer's negative (-) terminal to the left crossover network's WOOFER negative (-) output terminal. 3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to connect the right woofer speaker terminals to the right crossover network. Caution: Match each speaker wire to its corresponding positive (+) or negative (-) terminals on the crossover network to ensure proper phasing. Improper phasing can cause poor bass response. TESTING THE SPEAKER SYSTEM After you connect your speaker system, turn on and test your autosound system to be sure you properly connected the speakers. Warning: Turn off the power immediately and check all wiring connections if you detect either of the following symptoms. The sound is distorted from any of the speakers. No sound or static from any speaker. If the speakers are properly connected and sound problems do not develop, turn off your autosound system, temporarily disconnect the crossover networks and the tweeter and woofer speakers, and mount the speaker system. MOUNTING THE SPEAKER SYSTEM MOUNTING THE CROSSOVER NETWORK 1. Use your thumb to push in the upper case marked IIII on two sides to disengage the hooks inside. Then separate the upper and lower case. 2. Place the left crossover network on the selected mounting location and drill two mounting holes through its two mounting holes on the lower case. 3. Insert supplied machine screws into the two mounting holes on the crossover network's lower case, then place the nut and washer beneath the mounting hole. Tightly drive the screw through the nut and the washer to secure the crossover network. 4. Push in the upper case to engage the hooks to the case and then snap the upper case onto the lower case. 5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to install the right crossover network. MOUNTING THE TWEETER You can mount the tweeters in one of two ways; flush mount in a cut-out speaker opening, or surface mount using the supplied tweeter frame. 1. Cut or drill the speaker opening and screw mounting holes for the speaker on the selected location using the provided tweeter speaker mounting template. 2. Insert a slim object into the one of the mounting holes on the back of the tweeter frame and push the grille out. 3. Clip the supplied speed clips over the mounting screw holes. 4. Place the speaker near the opening and connect the speaker wires to the crossover network (see "Connecting the Speaker System"). 5. Place the speaker directly on the opening and align its mounting holes with the drilled mounting hole then tightly drive the supplied screws into the screw holes. 6. Place the butyl on two sides of the tweeter frame and then push the grille into the tweeter frame. 7. Route the speaker wires and connect to the crossover network (see "Connecting the Speaker System"). 8. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 to flush mount the other tweeter. Surface Mounting The supplied butyls are small spongy pads or capsules that expand as you tighten the speaker frames and grilles together. This helps to keep the speaker assembly in place and to minimize distortion caused by vibration. 1. Drill an 8mm wire hole and two mounting holes on the selected mounting location using the tweeter base as a template. 2. Insert a slim object into the mounting holes on the back of the tweeter frame, then push it to detach the grille and expose the two mounting holes. 3. Insert the tweeter wires through the center wire hole on the tweeter base then through the 8mm drilled hole. 4. Align the two mounting holes on both the tweeter base and the mounting surface, then drive the supplied wood screws tightly into the mounting holes to fix the tweeter base in place. 5. Place the tweeter on its base and align the two screw mounting holes, then tightly drive in the supplied wood screws to fix the tweeter onto its base. 6. Place the butyl on two sides of the tweeter frame, then push the grille into the tweeter frame. 7. Route the speaker wires and connect them to the crossover network (see "Connecting the Speaker System"). 8. Repeat Steps 1-7 to surface mount the other tweeter. MOUNTING THE WOOFERS 1. Cut or drill the speaker opening and screw mounting holes for the speaker on the selected location using the provided woofer speaker mounting template. 2. Separate the speaker grille assembly from the speaker and then separate the grille from its frame to expose the mounting holes on the frame. 3. Place the supplied speed clips behind the drilled mounting holes and apply a small strip of tape over the clip to insure that the clips stay in place. 4. Place the speaker near the opening and connect the speaker wires to the crossover network (see "Connecting the Speaker System"). 5. Place the speaker over the opening and align its mounting holes with the drilled mounting holes. 6. Place the grille frame over the speaker and align its mounting holes with the speaker's and drilled mounting holes. Then tightly drive the supplied screws into the four screw holes. 7. Place the supplied butyls on the four recesses on the grille frame, then secure the grille onto the frame. 8. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 to mount the other woofer. (LB/all-03/15/95)
