High-Power In-Dash (120-2151) Installation Faxback Doc. # 15031 AM/FM Stereo CD Player BEFORE YOU BEGIN THE INSTALLATION You should be able to answer all of these questions about the vehicle's electrical and sound systems. Does the vehicle have a 12-volt negative ground system? Which of the stereo's wires is the power wire? Which terminal in the vehicle's fuse box is for accessories? How do I connect a wire to the fuse box? Which stereo wires are line-level outputs and which are speaker outputs? Also, be aware that installation in the vehicle may require cutting or modifying the vehicle. Preparing the Mounting Area Before you mount the stereo, make sure you have all the necessary materials. Then confirm that the stereo fits the vehicle's mounting area. The mounting area must be at least 7 inches (17.0 cm) deep. CAUTIONS: Make sure the vehicle's mounting area is as level as possible. If you cannot mount the stereo exactly level, make sure the stereo will not tilt up more that 30 degrees when it is mounted. Be careful to avoid obstructions behind the mounting surface. NOTE: If the mounting area is too large, you might be able to mount the stereo with an in-dash installation kit, available at the local Radio Shack store. Follow the installation kit's instructions to mount the stereo. Routing Speaker Wire If you install speakers, avoid routing the speaker wires near moving parts or sharp edges. You can usually route it along the wiring channel beneath the vehicle's door facings by carefully removing the molding that holds the carpet in place. After you route the speaker wire, replace the molding. Removing the Shipping Screw Before you mount the stereo, use a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the shipping screw from the top of the stereo. The shipping screw helps protect the stereo's CD player from being damaged during shipment. CAUTION: If you do not remove the shipping screw from the stereo, you cannot remove the supplied sleeve from the stereo and the CD player will not work. NOTE: Save the shipping screw in case you ever have to move the stereo to another vehicle. You can secure it to the back of the stereo with a piece of tape. Testing the Stereo Before you mount the stereo or any speakers you are installing, test the stereo by temporarily connecting the power wires, speakers, and antenna as described in "Making the Connections." If you plan to use an adapter harness to connect the stereo, see "Using an Adapter Harness." IMPORTANT: Do not cut these wires. If you cut any wire, you cannot obtain a refund or exchange on this product. Radio Shack will not provide warranty service if you cut a wire and find the product is defective. MAKING THE CONNECTIONS The supplied 14-wire harness includes all the lead wires you need to connect the stereo to ground, power, some optional components, and speakers. Your local Radio Shack store carries a full line of wire and wire management accessories. CAUTIONS: For added safety and to protect the stereo, disconnect the cable from the vehicle battery's negative (-) terminal before you begin. You must connect the ground, primary, and memory backup wires first, then make all other connections before you plug the 14- wire harness into the stereo. If you do not make connections in the order below, damage to the stereo is possible if any wire connections are made incorrectly. Be sure the speakers can handle 33 watts of power (16.5 watts per channel). You must connect a separate wire to each speaker terminal as described in the following procedure. Do not use a common wire or chassis ground for any speaker connection. Using an Adapter Harness If you are replacing an existing stereo, or if the vehicle has been factory-wired for autosound components, you might be able to use an adapter harness to connect the power and speakers. Radio Shack stores sell adapter harnesses for most vehicles. Follow the directions that come with the adapter harness to temporarily connect the power and speakers. Connecting Ground, Power, and Optional Components Follow these steps to connect the 14-wire harness to ground, primary and memory backup power, and optional components. 1. Disconnect the cable from the vehicle battery's negative (-) terminal. 2. Connect the black ground wire to a chassis ground, such as a metal screw attached to a metal part of the vehicle's frame. Be sure that the screw is not insulated from the chassis by a plastic part. 3. Connect the red power wire (with in-line fuse holder) to a point in the vehicle's fuse block that has power only when you turn the vehicle's key to either the accessory (ACC) or START position. This connection turns on the stereo when you turn on the ignition or turn the key to ACC, and turns off the stereo when you turn off the ignition. This prevents the vehicle's battery from being drained if you leave the stereo on when you turn off the ignition. 4. Connect the yellow power/memory wire (with black transformer and in- line fuse holder) to the vehicle battery's positive (+) terminal or to a fuse that provides a continuous source of 12 volts. This connection provides power for the stereo's components, and continuous power for the stereo's memory when the ignition is turned off. 5. Connect the blue wire to any optional equipment, designed to run from a switched source, that you want the stereo to turn on and off (such as an equalizer/booster or a power antenna). This wire does not provide power to the components. It simply turns them on or off. If you do not use this wire, secure it with a wire tie and do not let it touch metal. Connecting an Equalizer/Booster If you are connecting the stereo to an equalizer/booster, you need additional wires (not included) to connect the stereo's LINE OUTPUT R CH BLACK and LINE OUTPUT L CH GRAY jacks to the equalizer/booster. You can connect an equalizer/booster to the stereo to increase the total power output from the system. Connect the stereo's LINE OUTPUT R CH BLACK and LINE OUTPUT L CH GRAY jacks and blue wire, if necessary, to the equalizer/booster. Check the equalizer/booster's owner's manual for directions. Connecting One Pair of Speakers If you are using only one pair of speakers, set 2 CH/4 CH on the back of the stereo to 2 CH. Then follow these steps to connect the 14-wire harness to the speakers. 1. Connect the gray wire to the right speaker's positive terminal. This terminal is usually marked with a plus (+) sign or red mark. 2. Connect the gray/black wire to the right speaker's negative terminal. This terminal might be marked with a minus (-) or it might not be marked at all. 3. Connect the white wire to the left speaker's positive terminal. 4. Connect the white/black wire to the left speaker's negative terminal Connecting Two Pairs of Speakers If you are using both front and rear speakers, set 2 CH/4 CH on the back of the stereo to 4 CH. Then follow these steps to connect the 14-wire harness to the speakers. 1. Connect the gray wire to the right front speaker's positive terminal. This terminal is usually marked with a plus (+) sign or red mark. 2. Connect the gray/black wire to the right front speaker's negative terminal. This terminal might be marked with minus (-) sign or it might not be marked at all. 3. Connect the white wire to the left front speaker's positive terminal. 4. Connect the white/black wire to the left front speaker's negative terminal. 5. Connect the violet wire to the right rear speaker's positive terminal. 6. Connect the violet/black wire to the right rear speaker's negative terminal. 7. Connect the green wire to the left rear speaker's positive terminal. 8. Connect the green/black wire to the left rear speaker's negative terminal. Connecting the Antenna Connect the vehicle's antenna cable to the stereo's large black antenna connector. Checking the Connections Make sure you have securely made all connections before continuing with the installation. Connecting the Battery and the 14-Wire Harness Reconnect the cable to the vehicle battery's negative terminal, then plug the 14-wire harness into the 14-pin wiring socket. TESTING THE CONNECTIONS Turn on the vehicle's ignition and test the stereo. If the stereo does not work, IMMEDIATELY DISCONNECT THE VEHICLE BATTERY'S NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL. Then recheck the connections. CAUTION: If you played a CD while testing the connections, be sure to remove the CD from the stereo before continuing. After you test the stereo and verify that everything works, make sure the connections are correctly marked or identified. Then follow the instructions in "Mounting the Stereo." NOTE: The wiring harness has the following labels Blue Wire: Red Wire: Yellow Wire: Black Wire: MOUNTING THE STEREO Be sure you test the stereo first and verify that it works properly. Follow these steps to mount the stereo. 1. Disconnect the cable from the vehicle battery's negative (-) terminal. 2. Disconnect the wire harness and the antenna. 3. Insert both of the supplied keys into the slots at the left and right sides of the stereo. Then slide the sleeve off of the stereo. 4. Insert the sleeve into the dash. Then secure the sleeve to the dash by bending out the appropriate tabs with a screwdriver. Bend out all the side tabs. 5. If the vehicle has a suitable mounting hole under the dash, use pliers or a 9/16 inch box-end wrench to attach the short end of the supplied mounting bolt to the back of the stereo. 6. Reconnect the cable to the vehicle battery's negative (-) terminal. 7. Reconnect the wire harness and the antenna. 8. Slide the stereo into the sleeve until it locks into place. 9. If you are securing the stereo to an existing mounting hole under the dash, push the supplied rubber mounting grommet onto the mounting bolt, then push the mounting bolt (covered by the mounting grommet) through the hole and slide it to the left or right to secure it. Otherwise, use one of the supplied bolts (with attached washer) to attach one end of the supplied metal strap to the mounting bolt on the back of the stereo. If necessary, bend the metal strap to fit the vehicle's mounting area. Then use either the supplied sheet metal screws or the other bolt (with attached washer) to attach the other end of the strap to a solid metal part of the vehicle under the dashboard. This strap also helps ensure proper electrical grounding of the stereo. REMOVING THE STEREO FROM THE DASH 1. Disconnect the cable from the vehicle battery's negative (-) terminal. 2. If you secured the stereo to an existing mounting hole under the dash, slide the stereo to the right or left to free the mounting bolt from the hole. Otherwise, remove the metal strap attached to the back of the stereo. 3. Remove the stereo's control panel. 4. Insert both of the supplied keys into the slots at the left and right sides of the stereo. Then slide the stereo out of the dash. 5. Remove the keys from the slots. 6. Disconnect the wire harness and the antenna. 7. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to reinstall the shipping screw in the top of the stereo. 8. Reconnect the cable to the vehicle battery's negative (-) terminal. (TE/all-04/27/95)
