Road Patrol XK Superheterodyne Radar Detector (220-1621) Installation Faxback Doc. # 17808 MOUNTING THE RADAR DETECTOR Correct placement of your radar detector is important for proper operation. Radar signals (either X-band or K-band) pass through glass but are deflected by metal. You must mount the detector so that the antenna has an unobstructed view of the road ahead. Do not mount the unit behind any metallic objects such as wiper blades, radio antennas, or mirrored or reflective sun screens. Radar signals pass through tinted windows with little or no alteration. Mounting the unit as high as possible gives the best vantage point to the horizon and reduces the chance of interference from wiper blades. Do not mount the detector so that it obstructs the driver's vision. CAUTION: To avoid heat damage to the detector, do not mount it in front of heater or defroster vents. Radio Shack cannot anticipate every possible way you might mount your Micronta Road Patrol XK Radar Detector. It is important that you use common sense and mount the unit where it does not present a hazard in the event of an accident. Visor mounting might not be desirable if the detector must be too near an occupant's head. The radar detector comes with various accessories to help you install it. Use one of the following mounting methods to install the unit either on the sunvisor, dashboard, or windshield. SUNVISOR MOUNTING One possible location for your unit is on the sunvisor where there are few or no obstructions. Before you mount the detector on the sunvisor, attach the mounting bracket as follows: 1. Remove the paper backing from the spacers and place them around the holes on the bracket. 2. Align the holes on the bracket with the holes on the sides of the detector. Then, use the thumb screws to secure the bracket to the detector. 3. Attach the sunvisor clip to the mounting bracket. Slip the clip' prongs into the slots on the bottom of the mounting bracket, and slide the prongs into the holes at the bottom of the slots until the prongs snap firmly into place. In cars that have an instrument pod cover, you can also use the sunvisor clip as a quick-release dash mount. BRACKET MOUNTING You can use the bracket to mount the detector on your dashboard or wind- shield. To do this, use the double-sided adhesive pads to secure the bracket. 1. Attach the bracket to the detector as described in "Sunvisor Mounting." 2. Remove the paper backing from the adhesive pads, and attach the pads to the bracket as shown. 3. Firmly press the bracket into place on the dashboard or windshield. NOTE: The pads' adhesive will not stick to surfaces that have been treated with a vinyl cleaner or protectant. HOOK-AND-LOOP TAPE MOUNTING If you want to be able to easily remove and store your detector, you might prefer the hook-and-loop tape mounting. On a curved dashboard, use two pieces of tape on each side of the bracket to prevent rocking. On a flat dashboard, as single piece of tape on each side is usually adequate. 1. Peel off the paper backing from the "hook" portion of the pieces of hook-and-loop tapes, and apply them to the bottom of the detector. 2. Remove the paper backing from the "loop" portion of the pieces of hook-and-loop tape, and attach them to the tape pieces already on the detector. The adhesive must be facing out. 3. Press the adhesive surfaces against the dashboard in the desired location. NOTE: The hook-and-loop tape adhesive will not stick to surfaces that have been treated with a vinyl cleaner or protectant. CONNECTING POWER CAUTION: This detector is designed for use in vehicles that have 12-volt, negative-ground electrical systems. Most vehicles have this type of system. If you are not sure about your vehicle, check with your vehicle dealer. The radar detector's power cable has a plug that fits the cigarette-lighter socket in most vehicles. For proper detector operation, the socket must be clean and securely grounded. 1. Insert the power cable's smaller plug into the DC 12V jack on the back of the detector. 2. Insert the cigarette lighter plug into the cigarette lighter socket. REPLACING THE POWER CORD FUSE The power cord's plug is fuse-protected. If your radar detector is inoperative, check the fuse. If the fuse is blown, replace it with an identical 1-amp, fast-blow fuse (Radio Shack Cat. No. 270-1273). Twist the fuse holder to open and close it. NOTE: Using a fuse with a rating higher than 1 amp can cause permanent damage to your radar detector. (WL/all-11/13/95)
