Car Stereo Frequency Equalizer (120-1962) Wiring Faxback Doc. # 17954 CONNECTING POWER Follow these steps to connect power to the equalizer. 1. Disconnect the wire from the vehicle battery's positive (+) terminal. This reduces the possibility of damage to your vehicle's electrical system during installation. NOTE: You must reset the clock and any other timer/memory devices such as digital tuner memories for the radio, when you reconnect the wire after you complete the power connections. 2. Connect the equalizer's black (ground) wire to a clean, metal bolt attached to the vehicle's metal frame. NOTE: Do not connect the wire to a part insulated from the frame by a plastic part. 3. Connect the red wire with the 1A fuse holder, labeled EQUALIZER POWER LEAD, to the radio/cassette player's switched power lead, or to a terminal in the vehicle's fuse box that turns on or off with the ignition. 4. Connect the red wire with the 3A fuse holder, labeled TO ACCESSORY 12V POWER, to the ACC terminal or any other terminal that turns on and off with the vehicle's ignition. 5. If you have a power amplifier with a switched power feature, connect the orange wire labeled SWITCHED POWER LEAD to the amplifier's switched power lead. NOTE: If you do not use this wire, use a wire tie to keep the wire out of the way. CONNECTING A RADIO/CASSETTE PLAYER If the radio/cassette player has RCA-type line output jacks, make the following connections: 1. Connect the radio/cassette player's left and right output jacks to the equalizer's corresponding left and right INPUT jacks using shielded cables with RCA-type plugs. 2. Disconnect the square, in-line connectors in the equalizer's input wiring harness. 3. Connect the equalizer's 5-pin plug to the corresponding jack on the radio/cassette player. CAUTION: If your radio/cassette player's wiring harness (for power and speaker connections) does not match the equalizer's harness, you can buy the proper adapter at your local Radio Shack store. If the radio/cassette player does not have RCA-type line output jacks: 1. Be sure the square, in-line connectors in the equalizer's input wiring harness are secure. 2. Connect the equalizer's 5-pin plug to the corresponding jack on the radio/cassette player. CONNECTING A CD PLAYER To connect a in-dash CD player, connect the CD player's left and right outputs to the equalizer's corresponding left and right CD INPUT jacks. Use shielded cables with RCA-type plugs for the connections. To connect a portable CD player, use a patch cord with a 1/8-inch stereo plug at both ends. Plug one end of the cord into the equalizer's CD jack. Then, plug the other end of the cord into the CD player's headphone jack. You can also connect other audio components that have a 1/8-inch headphone jack. CONNECTING AN AMPLIFIER Your equalizer has three pairs of RCA-type line-level output leads that let you connect a front-channel stereo amplifier, a rear-channel stereo amplifier, and a subwoofer amplifier. NOTE: The subwoofer outputs on the equalizer are mono. This lets you use one or two subwoofers with your system. If you use two subwoofers, connect both subwoofer outputs to the amplifier's left and right inputs. Your local Radio Shack store sells the proper amplifiers for this equalizer. INSTALLING FUSES If the fuse in your radio/cassette player is not rated at 3 amps, replace the equalizer's 3-amp fuse with one that has the same rating as the radio/ cassette player's fuse. TESTING THE EQUALIZER Before you mount the equalizer, reconnect the battery's positive (+) wire and test the entire system. See "Operation." MOUNTING THE EQUALIZER After you test the equalizer, mount it as follows. You can unplug the wiring harnesses to make mounting more convenient. 1. Using the U-shaped mounting bracket as a guide, mark the locations for the mounting holes. 2. Drill 3/16 -inch holes in the marked locations, being careful not to damage anything on the other side of the mounting surface. 3. Attach the mounting bracket to the mounting surface using the supplied sheet-metal screws. 4. Attach the equalizer to the mounting bracket and reconnect the wiring harnesses. MOUNTING THE EQUALIZER WITH AN AMPLIFIER Use the illustration on page 13 of the owner's manual as a guide for installing the equalizer with one or two amplifiers. (CS/all-11/21/95)
