Road Patrol XK Wireless Hidden/Remote Radar Detector (220-1622) Installation Faxback Doc. # 32789 INSTALLATION CHOOSING THE REMOTE SENSOR LOCATION Careful selection of the remote sensor's location is important for proper operation. Radar signals will pass through glass or plastic, but not through metal. In choosing the remote sensor's location, keep the following points in mind: Do not allow any part of the vehicle to obstruct your remote sensor's radar reception. Your remote sensor is heat - and water-resistant, but it is not heat or water-proof. Mount it away from heat sources in as dry a spot as possible. Mount the remote sensor where it does not interfere with the flow of air to your engine's cooling system. Mount the remote sensor securely in order to minimize shock and vibration. Do not mount the sensor directly behind a metallic object. Behind the Grille You can mount the remote sensor behind your vehicle's grille. Be certain that the grille does not block the sensor's signal reception. You can place the remote sensor behind a plastic grille that is nonmetallic and has no metallic paint or covering. Under the Bumper You can mount the remote sensor beneath the bumper. Or, you can mount it directly behind a plastic or rubber bumper if the bumper is non-metallic and has no metallic paint or covering. MOUNTING THE REMOTE SENSOR 1. Choose the mounting location. (For more information about choosing a location for the remote sensor, see "Choosing the Remote Sensor Location", above.) 2. Use the mounting bracket as a template to mark the position of the holes you need to drill. CAUTION: Route the remote sensor's power wires so that they cannot be damaged by moving parts or by heat from the exhaust manifold. NOTE: The sensor's wires function as an antenna to send signals to the indicator unit inside the vehicle. Do not coil, twist, or trim any excess wire. Route the excess wire along a fender liner or other surface and attach the wire securely. REPLACING THE REMOTE SENSOR FUSE Your radar detector's remote sensor is fuse-protected. If the remote sensor is inoperative, check the fuse in the positive (red) wire. If the fuse is blown, replace it only with an identical 2A fuse (Radio Shack Cat. No. 270-1275). To open the fuse holder, twist it as shown. MOUNTING THE INDICATOR You can place the indicator in your pocket, on the dashboard, or on the sun visor. Hook-and-Loop Tape Mounting For easy removal and storage of the indicator, you might choose to mount to on your dashboard using the supplied hook-and-loop tape. NOTE: The hook-and-loop tape adhesive will not stick to surfaces that have been treated with a vinyl cleaner or protectant. 1. Remove the paper backing from the two pieces of hook tape, and apply these two pieces to the bottom of the unit. 2. Remove the paper backing from the two pieces of loop tape, and attach their loop sides to the hook tape already on the unit. The adhesive surfaces must be facing outward. 3. Press the adhesive surfaces against the dashboard in the desired location. Sun Visor Mounting The sun visor is one convenient place to mount your indicator. 1. Snap the supplied sun visor mounting clip into the track of the unit. 2. Use the clip to attach the indicator unit to your sun visor. WARNING: Use care and common sense in selecting a sun visor mounting location. The indicator must not interfere with the driver's vision or become a hazard during a sudden stop. SHIRT POCKET MOUNTING For discreet use of your radar detector: 1. Open pocket. 2. Slip the indicator into your pocket. POWERING the indicator You can operate the indictor unit as a self-contained, battery-powered device or you can use the supplied cord to power it from your vehicle's electrical system. Be sure that the indicator's batteries are fully charged before using the unit on its battery power. You can charge the unit's batteries as follows: 1. Set the POWER OFF/VOLUME control to the OFF position. 2. PLUG the power cord's small end into the indicator unit's 12V DC jack. 3. Plug the power cord's large end into your vehicle's cigarette lighter socket. NOTES: Required charging time is 16 hours with the indicator unit turned off, and 96 hours with it turned on. You can leave the indicator unit plugged into your vehicle's cigarette lighter socket for a maximum of 16 hours. Extended charging might cause a noticeable drain of your vehicle's battery power. Naturally, if your cigarette lighter does not operate when the ignition is off, you must run your engine in order to charge the indicator's batteries in your vehicle. You can also charge the indicator unit's batteries from a household AC outlet using an optional Radio Shack AC adapter (Cat. No. 273-1652). Normally, you can recharge the indicator unit's batteries about 2000 times. Whenever possible, wait for the BATT light to go out before recharging the indicator's batteries. Occasional over-charging does not harm the batteries, but repeated overcharging can shorten battery life. (BR/EB 4/30/96)
