Pull-Out Stereo Cassette (120-1989) Installation Faxback Doc. # 7965 ROUTING SPEAKER WIRE If you install speakers, avoid routing the speaker wire near moving parts or sharp edges. You can usually route it along the wiring channel beneath the vehicle's door facings by carefully removing the molding that holds the carpet in place. After routing the speaker wire, replace the molding. MOUNTING THE SLEEVE If the stereo does not fit into the existing opening, you might be able to use an indash installation kit for most vehicle models are available at your local Radio Shack store. Follow the installation kit's instructions to mount the stereo. If you are not using an in-dash installation kit, follow these steps to mount the stereo. Note: The stereo comes with a back strap, nut and mounting sleeve. Before you mount the stereo, study the illustrations and be sure that you have all the necessary materials. 1. Disconnect the negative (-) terminal on your vehicle's battery. 2. Temporarily disconnect the wiring harness(es) and antenna. 3. Insert the mounting sleeve into the opening. Secure the mounting sleeve by bending the locking tabs outward with a screwdriver. 4. Reconnect the wiring harness(es) and antenna. 5. Use the supplied hardware to secure the back strap. Attach the strap's other end to an existing bolt on a solid metal part of the vehicle. This strap also helps ensure proper electrical grounding of the stereo. Note: Be sure the mounting is secure enough to withstand the strain of sliding the stereo in and out of the mounting sleeve. INSERTING AND REMOVING THE STEREO Inserting the Stereo in the Mounting Sleeve 1. Hold the stereo's handle and slide the stereo into the mounting sleeve. Caution: Do not try to force the stereo into the mounting sleeve with the handle flat against the front panel. This will break the mounting sleeve's lock. Always keep the handle in a horizontal position until the stereo slides in all the way. 2. Push the handle down toward the front panel to lock the stereo into the mounting sleeve. Caution: Be sure the stereo is locked into place whenever the vehicle is moving. This ensures a good power connection and keeps the stereo secure while you are driving. Removing the Stereo from the Mounting Sleeve Cautions: Always remove the cassette tape and turn off the stereo's power before removing the stereo from the mounting sleeve. If you have difficulty removing the stereo, grip the handle and push the stereo firmly back into the mounting sleeve. Then remove the stereo. Warning: During use, the stereo's heat sink area (the sides) can become dangerously hot. To avoid injury when removing the stereo avoid touching the stereo's sides. Follow these steps to remove the stereo. 1. Press the handle release and place the handle in its horizontal position. 2. Grasp the handle and pull the stereo out of the mounting sleeve. The memory back-up power supply stores the programmed stations for as long ten days after you remove the stereo from the mounting sleeve.
