Digital Stereo Cassette (120-1993) Connections Faxback Doc. # 7982 CONNECTING SPEAKERS Your speaker's combined power-handling capacity must be at least 30 watts. Each speaker must have an impedance of at least 4 ohms. Your local Radio Shack store carries a full line of automotive speakers. Cautions: For added safety and to protect your stereo, disconnect the cable from the negative (-) terminal on your vehicle's battery before you begin. You must connect a separate wire to each speaker terminal as described in the following procedure. Do not use a common wire or chassis ground for any speaker connection. Connecting Two Speakers Set 4CH/2CH located on the bottom of the stereo to 2CH. Then make the following connections. 1. Connect the harness' gray wire to the right speaker's positive (+) terminal. 2. Connect the harness' violet wire to the speaker's negative (-) terminal. 3. Connect the harness' white wire to the left speaker's positive (+) terminal. 4. Connect the harness' green wire to the left speaker's negative (-) terminal. Connecting Four Speakers If you want to use both front and rear speakers, set 4CH/2CH located on the bottom of the stereo to 4CH. Then make the following connection. 1. Connect the harness' gray wire to the front speaker's positive (+) terminal. 2. Connect the harness' gray/black wire to the front right speaker's negative (-) terminal. 3. Connect the harness' violet wire to the rear right speaker's positive (+) terminal. 4. Connect the harness' violet/black wire to the rear right speaker's negative (-) terminal. 5. Connect the harness' white wire to the front left speaker's positive (+) terminal. 6. Connect the harness' white/black wire to the front left speaker's negative (-) terminal. 7. Connect the harness' green wire to the rear left speaker's positive (+) terminal. 8. Connect the harness' green/black wire to the left speaker's negative (-) terminal. CONNECTING AN EQUALIZER/BOOSTER You can connect an equalizer/booster with speaker level connectors to your stereo to increase the total power output from the system. Check the equalizer/booster's owner's manual for directions. CONNECTING TO POWER AND ANTENNA Follow these steps to connect your stereo to power and to the antenna. 1. Connect the stereo's black ground wire to a metal screw attached to the vehicle's frame. Be sure the screw is not insulated from the chassis by a plastic part. 2. Connect the stereo's yellow wire with an in-line fuse holder (labeled "Memory Backup Lead") to a continuous 12-volt source. You connect it directly to the battery's positive terminal or to a non-switched fuse terminal (a terminal that the vehicle's ignition does not turn on and off). This connection provides continuous power for the tuner memory and the alarm LED when the ignition is turned off. 3. Connect the stereo's solid red power wire (with an in-line fuse holder) from the fourteen-wire harness to the accessory (ACC) terminal on your vehicle's fuse block. This connection provides power to the stereo when you turn on the ignition, and turns off power when you turn off the ignition. This prevents your vehicle's battery from draining if you leave the stereo on when you turn off the ignition. 4. Connect the vehicle's antenna cable to the stereo's large black antenna connector. 5. Connect the stereo's blue wire (labeled "Switched Power Lead") to an optional component you want the stereo to turn on and off, such as an automatic antenna or equalizer/booster. This wire does not provide power to any component. It simply turns it on or off. If you do not use this wire, use a wire tie to keep it out of the way. Note: The optional component must be designed for use with a switched power lead. See the optional component's owner's manual. 6. Connect the stereo's orange/white wire (labeled "Display Lighting") to the switched side of either your headlamp/parking light circuit or the accessory switch. This connection provides power to the backlighting for the display. 7. Connect the yellow/red wire to the mute terminal of the car phone. When you use the car phone, the stereo will muted. Note: If your car phone does not have the mute terminal externally or internally, or the stereo's phone mute does not work even though the connection is completed, we recommend you to contact an installation store to find a suitable interface module between the stereo and car phone. 8. Connect the supplied harness to the speaker socket. Reconnect the battery cable. TESTING THE CONNECTIONS After you connect the speakers, power wires, and antenna, turn on your vehicle's ignition to test the stereo to be sure it works. If the stereo does not work, immediately unplug the wiring harness(es). Recheck your connections or have a professional complete the installation. If the stereo works, follow the instructions under "Installation." (LB/all-12/01/94)
