2-Way 6 X 9" Speakers (120-1722) Installation Faxback Doc. # 9710 CHOOSING A LOCATION For best performance, install these speakers on a solid, firm surface that does not vibrate at high volume levels. We recommend you mount the speakers in the door panels or the back deck, if there is sufficient clearance. Note: Cardboard or fiber panels are not good mounting surfaces. Once you select the location, carefully inspect the area behind the mounting surface. There must be a clear unobstructed area of at least 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm) behind the panel. If you select a door location, check to be sure the window, window mechanism, and window handle will clear the speaker. Note: Check clearance with the window open and closed. Steel door panels and the back deck (behind the upholstery) might already have large cut-out areas for recessing the speaker. If these openings exist, using them saves you time and effort. WIRING THE SPEAKERS Connect two speakers to your auto sound system. Notes: If your autosound system has a front-to-rear fader, follow the instructions in the audio component's manual for the correct speaker connections. To ensure proper phasing, match the speaker wires to the corresponding positive (+) or negative (-) speaker terminals. Improper phasing can cause poor bass response. Cautions: Do not connect any of your speaker wires to chassis ground. Use all four wires to connect the speakers to your vehicle's autosound system. Do not connect four speakers to your car stereo/amplifier unless it is designed for a four-speaker connection. See your stereo/amplifier's owner's manual for instructions. Follow these steps to install your speakers. Note: Before you start, hook up the speakers to your audio system to be sure everything operates correctly. 1. Cut or drill the required holes using the provided template. 2. Route the speaker wires from the audio system to the speaker mounting area. If you selected door locations, you might have to punch a small hole in the door edge (near the door hinges) to route the wires into the door all the way. Tape any exposed wire to avoid pinching or cutting the excess wire when you close the door. 3. Place the speaker near the opening and connect the speaker wires to the speaker terminals. The positive terminal is identified with a + mark. See "Wiring the Speakers" for the correct wiring connections. 4. Place the speaker over the opening. Align the mounting holes with the holes you just drilled. 5. Thread each screw into the grille until it is secured to the grille frame. When all the screws are in place, put the grille frame over the speaker. Then secure the grille with the provided nuts. Because of its 2-way design, you might need to experiment a little with the tone control on your audio system to get the best performance. (LB/all-02/24/95)
