3000 HD (250-4010/4011) Hard Drive Setup Information Faxback Doc. # 1390 The following procedure will allow you to use the entire 42 megabytes of hard disk storage with MS-DOS 3.2. You still are limited to 32 megabytes in any particular partition, but 3.2 MS-DOS will allow all your partitions to be active at the same time. Each physical drive can have as many as four logical drives. For instance, your 40 meg HD could be divided with drive "C" being 12 megabytes, drive "D" being 10, drive "E" being 10 and drive "F" being 10 megabytes. Procedure: 1. Boot MS-DOS 3.2 diskette and run SETUP. Choose the proper drive type for your hard drive: type 11 for a 40 meg type 6 for a 20 meg type 7 for a 35 meg 2. Exit SETUP and reboot from the MS-DOS diskette. 3. At the "A:" prompt remove the MS-DOS diskette and insert the Supplemental Programs diskette. 4. Type HSECT. It will tell you that you have selected (with a 40 meg), 5 heads and 855 cylinders and ask you if this is correct. You must reply NO. It will then prompt you for heads and cylinders. A 40 meg HD had 5 heads and 988 cylinders. It will the format the entire hard disk (low level format). 5. At the "A:" prompt run FDISK to create a DOS partition. FDISK still only recognizes 32 megabytes of the hard disk. It will ask you if you want "the entire hard disk" as a DOS partition. Type "Y" and it will create a 32 meg DOS partition. Exit "FDISK" and reset using your MD-DOS system diskette. 6. At the "A:" prompt insert your Supplemental Programs diskette and type: FORMAT C:/S/V. 7. At the "A:" prompt, insert your MS-DOS diskette and type: COPY A:*.*C: 8. At the "A:" prompt insert the Supplemental Programs diskette and type: COPY A:*.*C: 9. Create a CONFIG.SYS file on drive C with at least the following two lines: device = HDRIVE.SYS device = MLPART.SYS C: 10. Remove the diskette from drive A and reset the computer. 11. At the "C:" prompt run "MLPART". Create a DOS2 partition and use the remaining hard disk for your second partition. This partition will be your drive "D:". 12. Exit "MLPART" and press reset. 13. At the "C:" prompt type: "MLFORMAT D:" to format drive D This procedure will give you a 32 megabyte drive "C" and a 10 megabyte drive "D". (/tmc-05/01/95)
