3800 HD (250-3533) POWER380 Utility Faxback Doc. # 1473 You can change several of the computer's power parameters by running the Power program (Power380). The Power program temporarily overrides the setup program's power-management parameters. Note: The computer returns to the parameter settings specified in the setup program when you reboot the computer. The Power program lets you: * Enable or disable the floppy diskette-drive controller (FDC) standby mode * Enable or disable the serial ports * Set the hard disk, display, and standby mode timeouts To run the Power program, follow these steps: 1. Exit from the program you are currently in. 2. If you are not in Drive C, type: c:ENTER 3. Select the DOS directory by typing: cd \dos ENTER 4. At the prompt, type: power380 ENTER The Power program screen appears. 5. Use the arrow keys to select the parameter you want to change and the parameter setting. 6. Press F1 to save your changes. The power program settings are immediately active. If you do not want to save the changes, press ESC. Advanced Power Management: The 3800 HD uses the necessary hardware and firmware to take advantage of the Microsoft APM (Advanced Power Management) Specification. Programs that are written and designed to take advantage of APM, such as MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1, allow the 3800 HD to operate more efficiently while it uses battery power. To enable APM, add the following line to the computer's config.sys file: device=c:\dos\power.exe After you add this line and save the config.sys file, run Setup380 and set the Power Management parameter to ON. Following the guidelines under "Normal Battery Life," battery life can increase up to 45 minutes when the computer runs APM programs. APM does this by regulating power usage based on the activity of the devices you access. For example, in many programs, the computer sits idle while it waits for the user to press a key on the keyboard. During those idle periods, APM puts the computer into a power conservation mode. The more idle time the computer has, the more APM works to save battery power. Because APM is new at this manual's printing, few programs have the APM specification code included.
