4000 SX (250-4900) Addendum Faxback Doc. # 1529 When setting up your computer for the first time, you do not need to connect the CMOS RAM battery as mentioned in the "Hardware Setup" section of your manual. As a courtesy, this battery has already been connected for you. Temmsx.sys The Utilities diskette that comes with your computer contains a new expanded memory manager program called temmsx.sys. This program is similar to the temm.sys program described in Appendix C of the MS-DOS Reference Manual. As its name implies, however, temmsx.sys is designed specifically for the Tandy 4000SX. Temm.sys, which may be on your MS-DOS system diskettes, does not work on the Tandy 4000SX and should not be used with it. For general information on temmsx.sys, see the temm.sys section in the reference manual. Then, note the following additional information: : The format for installing temmsx.sys in your config.sys file is: device = temmsx.sys [xxxxx] [Iy] [Mz] : You cannot use the /s (shadow ram) option with temmsx.sys. : You cannot use the frame base addresses M4 (D400-E400), M5 (D800-E800), M6 (DC00-EC00), and M7 (E000-F000) with temmsx.sys. TROUBLESHOOTING BLANK SCREEN : System cords are plugged in properly. : Monitor is turned on. : Monitor brightness and/or color is adjusted. : All jumpers or switches are set correctly. NO KEYBOARD ACTION : Keyboard cord is plugged in solidly. : Power switch is pressed to the on position. : Keylock is unlocked. SETUPSX PROBLEMS : System cords are plugged in solidly. : Expansion adapters are solidly seated. : All jumpers or switches are set correctly. : Hardware information when running the Setupsx program is correct. : CMOS RAM battery is properly connected. OPTIONS NOT WORKING : Options expansion adapter is properly seated. : System cords are plugged in solidly. : All jumpers or switches are set correctly. : Setupsx program is executed after installation : Hardware information when running the Setupsx program is correct. : CPU and bus clock speeds are set correctly. SOFTWARE TIPS : The best looking display can usually be achieved by selecting the highest resolution mode available, when you install your application software packages. : Some applications automatically detect the type of video adapter and monitor combination installed and configure themselves to take best advantage of the available hardware. : Install your software for VGA or EGA if possible. This allows your software to run on your VGA adapter in the adapter's startup configuration. : If your software does not specify a VGA or EGA option and you are using an RGB color analog monitor, try installing the software for color, if available. This usually works with your VGA adapters default color mode on color monitors. : To enable the VGA adapter to run software that will not run on VGA hardware, you must configure the VGA adapter to operate in another mode (such as CGA or Hercules) using the vga.exe utility. : Hercules-compatible software and some CGA-compatible games will require using the vga.exe utility to set the VGA adapter to the appropriate video standard. : Software that requires a certain video mapping may require you to use the vga.exe utility to set the VGA adapter to color or monochrome text mode as needed. For example, if the VGA adapter is set for color VGA text mode and you want to run something that requires monochrome text, you can use the vga.exe utility to switch modes. : The VGA adapter's default mapping depends on the type of monitor being used. If you are using the color monitor the default mapping will be color. If you are using the monochrome monitor the default mapping will be monochrome. INSTALLATION TROUBLESHOOTING Here are some typical symptoms and solutions to installation problems: ONE LONG BEEP AND TWO SHORT BEEPS WHEN YOU TURN ON THE SYSTEM : The VGA adapter is not properly seated in the expansion slot, or the expansion slot is dirty. Reseat the VGA adapter or clean the connectors with a clean pencil eraser. F1 SETUP ERROR ON BOOTUP : The SETUP program was not run. RUN YOU SOFTWARE : The software is not configured for or compatible with the VGA graphics adapter's current video configuration. Run vga.exe.
