4020 LX (250-5120) Hard Drive Installation Faxback Doc. # 1591 To install an expansion adapter, follow these steps: 1. Remove the screw from the appropriate expansion slot cover at the back of the computer. 2. Slide the metal bracket up and out of the slot. 3. With the back edge of the expansion adapter (the end with the metal bracket) facing the back of the computer, carefully align and press the expansion adapter into the expansion adapter is fully seated. 4. After the expansion adapter snaps into place, secure it with the retaining screw you removed in Step 1. 5. Run the Setup utility, if necessary, to complete the installation. See "Setup" in the "Utilities Diskette" section for more information. Installing Additional Drives: Your system can support two internal diskette drives and two internal hard disk drives and/or tape/disk cartridge systems. These devices can be 3 1/2" and/or 5 1/4", and they can be high-capacity or standard-capacity. As you plan the configuration of your disk drive system, consider that 3 1/2" drives (whether diskette drives or hard drives) will be positioned on the drive platform, and 5 1/4" drives will be positioned in the drive tower. (You can also position 3 1/2" drives in the drive tower, using a 5 1/4" adapter.) Notes to Hard Disk Owners: * Before installing the hard drive, record the following drive information on the worksheet provided in this manual: the drive type number, the number of heads and cylinders, and the head and cylinder error numbers. This information either is on a media error map attached to the hard drive or is in the hard drive owner's manual. You need to use the drive type number when you configure your system. You need to use the head and cylinder error numbers when you format your hard disk. * After installing the drive, be sure the heads on your hard drive are parked before you move your computer. See the "Utilities Diskette" section or your operating system manual for more information. * After installing the hard drive, format it in the position in which it will be used (either on its side or flat). IDE Connectors: Sixteen-bit Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) let you install up to two hard drives without having to buy and install a hard drive controller. The 16-bit IDE System requires SmartDrive (16-bit IDE-type) hard drives. These drives can function the same as standard ST-506 type hard drives. If you choose not to use the IDE system and to install a different type of hard drive system, such as ESDI or ST-506, you will need to run the SETUP program. NOTE: SCSI-type hard drives and devices can be used even while an IDE, ESDI, or ST-506 system is installed. The IDE cable connector is shown in the "Main Logic Board Layout" section. Attach a single data/controller cable to this connector (and then to your IDE hard drive) if you install a hard drive. TO activate the IDE controller, you must run the SETUP program. See the "Utilities Diskette" section for more information. If you are using MS-DOS or OS/2, you need to reset the computer with the system diskette in the diskette drive. Then, use the FDISK, FORMAT, and COPY commands to partition the drive, carry out a high-level format, and copy data to the hard drive. Refer to your operating system manuals for further information about these procedures. ESDI Drives: When installing a ESDI drive in the 4020LX, do not-specify it has a ESDI drive in SETUP. The ESDI driver does not work properly. Solution: Select NONE in SETUP. Then, use the DEBUG procedure from the ESDI controller documentation to low-level format. (/tmc-05/06/95)
